IELTS Speaking Sample Questions # Gambling

Gambling is when one completely trust on their luck and go out to play a game. The game can even let you win lot of fortune, as has happen with many, but can even make you lose everything. No matter how many stories have been present, of the people who have lost everything in gamble there are still many who do gambling. Let us today, have a look at some of the questions related to gambling.

Apart from the obvious financial problem what other consequences can occur as a result of excessive gambling?

I believe the major effect that gambling brings along is in the area of mental health and relationship. The sudden jerk of lot of money and then a scarcity of it, can lead to lot of mental issues, like depression and anxiety. It also ruins relationships, because a person who gambles often, tends to become very addictive to it, leading to tasteless conversations with the loved ones.

Who suffers the most from a gambling problem?

In my opinion, the person who gambles and his or her family or the loved ones are the people who are most affected through gambling. Other than these, gambling also causes trouble to the games and the government.

Apart from the obvious reason of winning money, why do people gamble?

Gambling brings along with it lot of rush. So, there are days when one can just go out and party hard and then days when there is no food to eat. For some it might be irritating, but for the most part, I think there are people who love living life at edge.

Why is gambling addictive?

I think the main reason of gambling being so addictive is because, it gives lot of rush. There is a sudden excitement that it brings along with itself. Lot of mind is applied and then you have to just trust your luck and then go on. The entire moment and feeling of gambling is too exciting to resist. But, then I think there are people who win lot of fortunes with gambling and it is the need of more that makes people addictive even when they start loosing.

What kinds of people do you think are more prone to developing a gambling problem?

I think anyone who likes living rush, who wants to earn more money and live lavishly can go for gambling. The initial victories make people addictive.

Do you regard putting money in machines for prizes, at an amusement arcade, as gambling?

Too an extent yes they are. Surely, they are not the very serious ones, but yes. When you put your money or time without knowing the results, it is all gambling.

Is there such a thing as good and bad luck? If so, what is it?

There is this quote that I have read, ” More hard work that I do, the more luck I seem to have”. And I do believe in that. Because when one works hard for something, their sub conscious gets trained for that goal. So, we are able to take chances, and things that might take us forward towards our goal come in fore front.

Does luck have anything to do with winning?

I think luck is just a word invented by people who could not figure out that it is pure hard work that helped people win. Because, mostly when people win they rarely talk of the hard work and the sacrifices they did for that win. So, most people regard it as mere luck.

Do you think it’s possible for a gambling addict to kick the habit?

It depends on the individual for the most part, but I believe that yes, it is possible to kick off that habit when someone realizes that the money earned through hard work is way more better than the one which is earned through gambling. When one understands the importance of having a balanced life, with more peace, a person is more likely to let this habit go.

Do you think that those who own and run casinos are criminals or conmen?

I think definitely not. They are just running a business which gives them profits but then if these casinos share their profit with the government I think it will be much more better. It is only when they don’t share the profit, I think they tend to do something that is not very ethically right.

Does the national lottery encourage gambling?

Too an extent, we can say yes. When people start winning these lottery is when they go for the bigger call. Because, they learn that money can be earned easily and one need not to die or take lot of pains for it.

What do you think was the most important invention in history?

The world has had its share of some of the great inventions like telephone, internet, aid for cancer, personal computers. But, I think out of all the great inventions, the invention of internet is the greatest of inventions that mankind has ever seen. It is with it, that the entire mankind has come together and it touches so many lives at the same time. From the child who cannot go to a great school, to a wife who wants to learn how to cook, there is so much that one can do and it is all possible because of internet.

Machines for the most part do make our life simpler, but then there are some which did made it difficult. But then, too a certain degree mobile phones have made life little difficult. Now, there is lot of hindrance even when you are not in particular situation. Some scientist even claim that  mobile phones increase anxiety levels and often cause depression.

MACHINES

Which are the most useless machines, the machines we could live without?

There are some machines for sure that I believe we can surely live without. One is Jumbo refrigerators. There are some good average sized refrigerators but then there are these big ones, which are expensive and claim to store a lot of things. But, I believe we could very well manage without them. Then, I thin Air conditioner. Yes, there are places where it is too hot and now we cannot imagine life without it, but still I think we would have better lived without them. With A.C a person is more likely to get sick if he or she moves in and out frequently.

If ever I could invent a machine, I would like to invent a machine that could teach people for free. I believe that once a data is feed into a machine it can easily teach a lot of people and there are so many out there who are deprived of education. A robot that could teach people, interact with them, would be something I will love to create.

Which machines do you think had one purpose when they were invented, but now have many or different ones?

The first name that comes to my mind is computer. Initially computers were invented to perform calculations better but then a shift from just solving problems came to storing data and now computers are used for so many things. For washing clothes, cooking food, doing bank transactions, buying  things. With computers we are able to make artificial limbs and other body parts.

What machines do you use everyday in your life?

I use computers, mobile phones and bicycle everyday. These are the three things that I need to be able to do all my daily functions properly.

What things can you do faster without using a machine?

I think almost nothing. Machines to make our life easier and simpler and may be I can do things better than machine but more faster, I am little skeptical on that.

IELTS Speaking Sample Answer # Leaders

Leaders are the people who change the world, the ones who shape the world, the ones who tell how things should be and what should be done. These are the people who give out the blue print, take the responsibility and often are said to be change makers. Let us today have a look at some of the questions related to leaders.

What is a leader?

Leader is a person who can think of ahead of time. Who when the world is worried about the consequences can figure out a different way of doing things and the one who in tough situations does not fumbles but helps others. A leader is not just the one who leads but the one who brings people together, who teaches that it is not just about living alone but being united and creating great things.

Who are the first leaders who come to your mind?

Barack Obama, Nelson Mandela, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Adolf Hitler, Indira Gandhi, Margaret Thatcher. These are some of the leaders who come to my mind when I hear the word leader.

What makes those people great leaders?

I believe it is their will and determination, the care and the love that they show and the never dying attitude that make them great leaders. These are the people who think about others first and then about themselves. These are the people who are able to see the greater good.

>leaders

What are the qualities or characteristics that every leader should have?

I believe honesty is the most important thing that is required out of a leader. It is very important for a leader to be able to put down the real situation in front of the team mates so that the situation can be dealt as a team. Also, communication, commitment and confidence are the three C’s required out of a leader. And in the end, the patience and the will power to be able to look ahead with great positivity, to endure failures is what is required of a leader.

Are some people natural leaders and other people natural followers? Why?

I think it is more of what happens with people as children, what circumstances they face and what things they learn. There is nothing in born but yes there are things that some learn early in life and then are able to enhance and improve on them for life, making them natural leaders.

Why do some people think it’s a bad thing to always follow other people?

I think it must be mostly because leaders come along with the image that says that these are the most powerful people, that they can bring out change, and it is often so larger than life that people think that anyone who is not a leader is not a great person to be. However, people often forget that it is not the power that makes a leader great, but the person himself that makes use of power great.

What characteristics does a bad leader have?

I believe manipulation is that one thing that a bad leader possess. Anyone who tries to manipulate the people or try telling lies, just to hide is surely a bad leader because he or she cannot or does not have the strength to face the consequences of a bad decision.

If you were the leader of your school, what changes would you make?

If I was the leader of the school, I think there are only a few things that I would like to change. One of them is punishment. I know that punishment is a great way to teach people, but then I also believe that a little award is never a bad things. So, if one sees a person getting punishment daily, it might be possible that he or she needs counselling and not just another punishment.

Also, there should be more Parent teachers meet. So, that parents and teachers can remain connected throughout, not just when the results come out.
