Beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder. A thing can be beautiful for a person but there are possibilities that the same thing may not stand exquisite to others. I believe things that I have received from my kith and kin hold paramount importance in my life and are incredibly beautiful to me. The object I would like to talk about is a painting that was gifted by my best friend on my birthday. The reason why it is close to my heart is that it was a handmade artwork. My best friend knew how much I adore handmade items as they express that exerted effort and time are made to make the person feel special. Similarly, she planned to give me something handmade I hung it on my room wall and it goes absolutely well with the background colour. The artwork is Mandana painting it is one of India’s old forms of tribal art that has survived over the years and gained huge popularity recently. She meticulously prepared it and described that it took her two days to complete. She made it on a drawing sheet and then got it framed to present to me on my birthday. She mentioned that this art is drawn to protect the home and hearth, welcome gods into the house and as a mark of celebrations on festive events. You should say:

    • Where the place is?
    • When you visited?
    • Why the air was not good?
    • And say how you felt about the place?
Sample Answer 1

Air pollution is now considered to be the world’s largest environmental health threat. It is hard to escape, no matter how prosperous an area you live in. It is all around us.  As day by day the increase in population, the number of motor vehicles also increased and motor vehicles cause high emissions, thereby causing pollution.  I can mark this as one of the strongest reasons for creating pollution after my current visit to a place where the air was highly contaminated.

My family planned to meet our extended family which lives in Delhi. We were extremely excited to meet them and equally excited to explore Delhi. The moment we arrive at Delhi airport we witnessed a change in the air quality. Everywhere it was black smoke and I could feel polluted particles in my breathing.  Despite the poor air quality, I tried to make the most of my trip and explore some of the famous places in Delhi. We visited Red fort, which is one of the most visited places in Delhi and holds historical importance, but again, the pollution made it challenging as I could barely see the intricate details on the walls due to the smog.. Even though I had a mask throughout the time but did not help me much. I was constantly thinking about how hard it must be for people to live here for a longer period of time.

Overall, I was completely dissatisfied with the trip. It made me appreciate the importance of environmental conservation and taking steps to reduce pollution levels for a better future.

Q3.Do you think the city is cleaner, or dirtier than the countryside?

Well, undoubtedly the countryside is cleaner than the urban areas.  As it is less crowded, More population results in more pollution. Industries, coal power plants, etc. are major causes of air pollution, which are found more in cities.

Sample Answer 2

Well, with the advent of urbanization it is quite obvious that the world has become a really compact space and pollution add on to it. Today, I would like to elaborate on one such place where the air was extremely polluted, the place is Delhi.

I went to Delhi last year and I had a three day stay there due to some work. I could clearly make out the difference in the air, for it was really polluted and thus, the visibility was highly reduced. In addition to this, there was this never ending queue of vehicles lined one after the other consistently honking at each other. Somehow, we managed to reach the hotel where our reservations for the stay were done. I was so tired that I directly went to sleep.

One of the main reasons why I feel the air was polluted was the high release of harmful pollutants in the air which is not only detrimental to environment but also, to the living beings. I could actually understand now, why people who live in metropolitan cities suffer from breathing problems which is again due to pollution. I personally felt claustrophobic even though I was outdoors, as the air was so suffocating.

STRONG WORDS
Word Meaning Sentence
Detrimental harmful Smoking is detrimental to health.
Verdant full of greenery Dehradun is a verdant city.

Speaking -Part 3 (Follow up questions)
Here are some examples of follow up questions that examiner may ask during your speaking (part 3) related to cue card ‘Describe a place you visited where the air was polluted.’

Q1.Is there more pollution than in the past?

Definitely yes, as the number of high-rise apartments and vehicles has increased. So, there is more release of pollutants into the air. Also, people are very callous about using their vehicles, they do not get their cars and bikes checked on a regular basis leading to the emission of carcinogens into the air whereas, this was not the case previously. As cities were less developed and verdant.

Q2.Do you think wind has any effect on pollution?

Well, I for sure think that wind contributes to the rising pollution as the suspended dust particles flow along the wind which may result in reduced visibility and detrimental effects on the eyes.

But, today I would like to talk about a time when I went to Sarojini market with my best friend Jharna, in Delhi. It is one of the most crowded places that I have visited so far. I went there to do some shopping for my sister’s wedding, which was supposed to be in the next month. I went around in multiple stores and shops to look for different options in clothing and the price was quite affordable. They had first copy of all the brands like Sabyasachi, Manish Malhotra, Madame, and many more.

Moreover, there was hoard of people gathered around at different places in the market, while the shopkeepers were yelling across the streets in order to sell their products and attract customers. Even though the market was highly congested, people were still interested in shopping from the place. One of the reasons could be that since, it was a wedding season, people came from across different corners of the nation to shop.
