IELTS Speaking Sample Questions # Idol Worship

There are people in the world you do great things and achieve so much success. These are the people who are thought to be the change makers, the ones who are stars of their fields. Although, they are individuals with extremely successful careers, often people tend to worship them. Some people believe that they are simply successful individuals, while many others tend to worship them.

Who are the most popular singers or groups in your country?

India has some legendary singers to its bucket list. There is Lata Mangeshkar who is thought to be the nightingale of our country. Then, we have A.R Rehman, also Sonu Nigam, Asha Bhosle, Mohit Chauhan are some of the reigning superstars of our country. From the past, we had some great singers like, Mukesh, Kishore, Rafi. These were the singers who are thought to be great at what they do.

What are some crazy examples of fan worship you have heard of?

India being such a vast country, there is so much that you hear, all of that being so unique. There are temples in South India for superstars like Rajnikanth, Amitabh Bachchan and others. Even pundits go to these film stars home to  get prashad for the worshippers. There have been cases when people have modified their appearances to such an extent when they start looking like their film stars. People have even gone out to propose their favorite stars and so much more.

How far is too far when talking about fan worship?

I think when fans start interfering into the personal life of  their superstars, that is when it becomes too far. When they start believing that they own a particular superstar, it becomes irritating. There have been cases when people have gone out of their way too much just for a star. For example, recently in our country Anushka Sharma was shamed a lot because of his connection with Virat Kohli and Virat’s poor performance. People linked the two and caused rift in the pair’s personal relation. This I think was too far.

Is there any particular band that you are huge fan of?

Oh, Yes! I am in love with One Direction. I think they sing superb and the music and the beats it is so great that just listening to their song once is not enough. The videos are good and the meaning of their songs is even more beautiful.

What were some of the groups that you really loved when you were younger?

When I was young, I remember following Pussycat dolls a lot. I really did liked their songs. Some of them like, When I grow up. This was the song that I used to hear a lot and would imagine myself doing all of these things said in the lyrics.

Who do you think promotes superstars?

I think superstars never promote themselves on their own. They have their marketing teams and all of those academicians out there to help them. From the very basics to the things that they like, everything is put out in such a manner as if they are trying to sell the superstar and it does help. The more brand image a superstar carries, more are the chances of them being successful.

Do you think superstars should be given the importance they are being showered with?

Superstars are doing a great job entertaining people, be it in the field of music or films. But, in my opinion, they are given much more importance than they deserve. There are so many others  who do deserve the respect and the fame superstars are given. For example, we have our soldiers who are doing a great job, helping our country and the people live a peaceful life. And then there are so many other sportsmen who are not given the due respect even thought they outshine themselves at the world stage.

Why do you think certain entertainers live such a long life of success while others tend to lose it quickly?

In my opinion, it is more about consistent hard work. There are people who even after gaining success are constantly improving themselves and these are the ones who tend to stay successful for long time. The ones who stop practicing after gaining a short stint at success tend to fall out.

Who is your favorite superstar and why?

My favorite has to be Priyanka Chopra. I admire her more than any one else out there. She has been a great model, great actress, singer and such a philanthropist. All of that on her own. There were times in our country when women were not respected as much in terms of money and the job that they take. But, this girl went out and changed the way things are there. She has worked with some great artists and yet maintained her own identity.

IELTS Essay # Subjects You Love

You should spend 40 minutes on this task.
Some people think that all university students should study whatever they like.
Others believe that they should be only allowed to study subjects that are useful in future, like science and mathematics.
Discuss both views and give your opinions.

The above question has been asked in a latest IELTS academic writing section 2. The most important part of answering is understanding the question. So, first thing first, understand the question. What is it talking about? There are people who believe that we should study subjects that will earn us money while others believe we should study subjects that we like. Now, you are supposed to talk about both the views and then give your opinion.

The best way of answering a question like this would be to figure out the points you will be saying for both the opinions. When that is done, you are set to write your essay and get that perfect band that you want.

Points
  1. Certain courses like, engineering, information technology offer more job opportunities and better salaries than other jobs.
  2. On society level, certain jobs are considered to be more respectable than others.
  3. Focus on technology in higher education leads to new invention, economic growth and greater future prosperity.
  4. Society benefits best when people do what they love.
  5. Certain aspects like creative thinking, knowledge on history, arts helps person for all round development.
Sample Answer

People have different opinions about the choice students should have with regard to the subjects they choose for study at university. While some argue that it would be better if students be forced into certain key subject areas, there are opinions stating a person should be allowed to do what they love the most. I believe, a society can truly succeed when every individual does what they love.

There are various benefits for directing the students towards areas like technology, computers, science, medicines etc as they are likely to be more beneficial than certain art degrees. With so many companies being technology centric, there are more career opportunities and job progression, better salaries and hence improved life style for people who take them. On society level, by forcing people into certain areas, governments can ensure the knowledge and skill gaps be filled in the economy. Even more, it helps in new inventions, economic growth and greater future prosperity.

In spite of these arguments, forcing a student towards a certain area merely because of better economic growth is less likely to bring in the required benefits. In my opinion, a society benefits from people who are passionate about learning. Even more, it is not possible to predict what areas of study will be beneficial for the society in long run. Allowing an individual to follow their passion allows them to do the things in a perfect way and bring about change in the world.

In conclusion, although it seems practical and sensible for universities to give more preference for certain subject, I prefer the freedom to lie within an individual on the choice of subjects. (274 Words)

IELTS Speaking # Camera

With the smart phones becoming popular, there are more number of people becoming photographers. Some of them click photo for fun, while others click to create memories. There are even some, who require it for their work. The selfie has become a style statement and with so many people becoming crazy over photos, choosing a phone with a great camera is the first requirement. Let us today have a look at some of the questions related to importance of camera in phone.

Is it really necessary to have a camera in your mobile phone? Why?

Yes, it is important for me, a camera phone not only allows me to capture those beautiful random moments but also helps me in my work. I am a blogger and require good photographs for my blog. Although, I do have a DSLR but I cannot carry it all the time. In those moments it is the smart phone that come in handy.

Having a camera phone is important but then it also depends on the individual. So, a person who works for a factory is less likely to require a camera for the work. However, in recent times camera phones have become really popular as they allow an individual to capture photographs, more importantly memories, which they cannot take otherwise.

Is it a better idea to have a camera separately? Why?

Sample Answer1: Having a camera separately is important, but only when you are a photographer or require good photographs for some work. For general usage, present day smart phones are developed enough to capture clear, beautiful photographs. Having a phone with camera is much more convenient than a professional camera. It allows you the freedom to easily take it wherever you want and capture the moment as it happens. But, for some one who requires high end photographs, could be a photographer or a blogger. It is always better to have a separate camera.

Sample Answer2: I believe it depends entirely on an individual’s passion. If someone is truly passionate about cameras it is always better to have a device entirely dedicated for the use of camera. However, if all that you need to do is take simple party photos or the ones that you take while you are with your friends, it is much more easier to capture moments in a smart phone.

Is it really necessary to have professional photographers in the media? Why?

A photograph surely speaks a thousand words and a photographer knows it better how to express what exactly is happening in a particular moment. Although, an amateur can take a photo but the one taken by a skilled photographer tends to be better in sense that it expresses the sense and emotion exactly as it happens. With media affecting our lives to such a great extent, it is very important for media to have professional photographers.

Do you think that some pictures in the media are taken by amateurs?

It is very much possible for the pictures to be floating in media be taken by a amateur. For example, a person might be the only one who was present during an event and happens to take the photograph of it. When media chooses to report this, the photo is likely to be used to spread the message. However, in most cases, the media is very much aware of the events taking place and the photographs taken are mostly taken by professional photographers.

I believe when it comes to showing the news about an event that happened accidentally i.e. without any prior warning, like a calamity or an attack. Most of the times it is the photo taken by an amateur that gets floated on media. While, when it comes to photographs that appear in certain media ads, they are taken by professional photographers.

Have people in general become obsessed with selfie?

Selfies have surely taken a big space in our lives. It has become one of the most common things that people do and for some the most important thing to do as well. Right from a wedding to a birthday to any other celebration, selfies have surely come up as those things that people do when they are happy or feel excited about things. You can find people taking their photos when they are bored, sad, happy, crushed or no matter what emotion it be. And, with camera phones becoming better and so accessible it is undoubtedly something that will stay for a long time.

On an average how many pictures do you take in a day/week/month?

I would, on an average it would be around 2 to 3. I am not a very big fan of clicking random photos in mundane life. So, obviously if we are going out on a vacation or something like, I’d prefer taking more photos.

Have you ever hired a professional photographer?

Professional photographer, yes I have hired once, for my brother’s wedding. We were so excited about it that we couldn’t just rely on photos taken by the guests or ourselves to capture the memories. There were good photographers hired and they helped us capture the wedding in the most beautiful way that it could have been.

Do other people’s bad habits get on your nerves?

Not most of the times, but yes some things tend to irritate me. Like, there are some people who themselves are non vegetarian and try to force it on others and it becomes irritating, especially when you are out on dinner with a group of friends. Sometimes even alcohol gets on my nerves. People tend to do horrific things when they are drunk, some fall down, some slap each other, some misbehave with their family members. Oh! yes. Long time back I was a TV and a tea addict. I used to watch tv for most of the part and drink so much of tea. But, then for some reasons, I just felt I should quit and I did quit both of them. Although quitting tea was easier for me, tv is something still to be conquered completely.

Is always coming late a bad habit?

I suppose it is, because it tends to bother people who are involved along with you. So, for example if you are late for a meeting, people might get bothered because of you. And, if this happens over a long period of time, people start ignoring your point of view.

What bad habits bother you the most?

Untidiness, food habits and over drinking tends to bother me. Untidiness because I cannot live in a stinky room. Yes, I am not the one who keeps things very orderly but there should be some degree of tidiness in a room or in the way someone keeps things. Also, bad food habits irritate me. There are people who spill food out, chew loudly and then talk when their mouth is full.

What good habits do you most admire?

I really like people who get up early and do exercise. It gives me a feeling that they are motivated towards leading a great life. Also, I love people who share things. I think sharing is a really great deed and people who can do that, even when they have so nimble, is a great thing.

habits

What unusual habits do you observe in your family members? Do they bother you?

My family is full of weird yet lovely people. We all have so many unusual habits. Like my mother, she is obsessed with her plants and take care of them like her own children. You cannot harm them in any way. She would go about watering them and then giving them manure and making sure everything is fine. And then there is my father. He is one of those people who is the most planned unplanned person. So, most of the times he would just inform us he is going a km here or there but then later on would tell us about the exciting places he has gone nearby, like 20-60 km here and there.
