Simple past represents the following –

Indicates an event that has already occurred in the past.
EXAMPLE-

  1. I received the letter yesterday.
  2. The plane landed at 3:00 am.
  3. She left the college early.
To express a habit of the past
EXAMPLE-

  1. They studied for many hours.
  2. She sang for various companies.
  3. She always carried a gun.

To express an action going on at the time stated.
EXAMPLE-

  1. While they danced, we sang.
  2. While they bathed, we fished.
  3. While they studied, he played.

NOTE – it is not compulsory to state the time when the event completed in the past, in a simple past sentence.
For Example-

  1. I learnt how to play guitar.
  2. He defeated Akhilesh in the war.
  3. I did not slept well yesterday.

Present Perfect Continuous # Grammar For IELTS

The present perfect continuous is used in the following cases –

To express an action that began at some time in the past and still continues.
EXAMPLE-

  1. We have been walking since morning.
  2. They have been building the house for several months.
  3. They have been studying since 7:00 am.

This form of tense if often used to describe a statement that has already completed. In this case, the emphasis is laid on the continuity of activity as an explanation of something.
EXAMPLE-

  1. Why have you become so thin? I have been in bed for few months.

In present perfect continuous tense, for and since are often used. But there is a difference between the two.
For is used to indicate a period of time, since indicates a point of time.

  1. She has been reading this book since last January.
  2. The boys have been playing for 6 hours.
  3. She has been sitting here since yesterday.

Present Continuous Tense # Grammar For IELTS

What do we understand by just the word “present continuous tense”. Present means something that is happening now. Continuous means it is taking place at the time of saying the statement. Tense means time. Now, let us understand this form of tense.
When do you say, that the sentence is a present continuous tense?

It is used to describe an action that is going at the time of speaking.
EXAMPLE-

  1. I am writing.
  2. She is reading.
  3. The batsman is hitting sixes.

It can also be used for a temporary action that might not be happening at the particular moment.
EXAMPLE-

  1. I am reading mein kemf ( it means I am reading the novel these days, not now, it is in general)
  2. I am writing a novel about my love story.
  3. His is building a house for himself.
It is also used to talk about something that we have planned to do in future.
EXAMPLE-

  1. I am going to Bangalore on coming Monday.
  2. The train will be arriving at 7:00 am.
  3. My uncle is arriving tomorrow.
We use simple present to denote a habit. But if the habit is something which persist and someone continues to do it even after all the warnings, we use present continuous tense.
EXAMPLE-

  1. She is always reading a novel.
  2. My dog keeps running here and there in the road.
  3. His constantly eating will surely make him obese some day.

Wedding # Speaking Section

Wedding are the most common thing in a country. There shall be rarely any country where no one marries. Keeping this in mind, often questions in IELTS are asked about wedding. These questions are asked in the first part of the IELTS speaking section.

1. Have you ever been to wedding?

Yes, I have been to wedding many a times.

2. Whose wedding was it?

I have been to wedding of my relatives and friends. I have also gone to wedding of friends of friends.

3. What clothes do people wear in weddings?

Mostly people wear traditional clothes. Women usually wear saree, suit or lehanga. Men wear, sherwani or other formals. However, it all also depends on the relationship one shares with the person getting married. People who are just acquaintances often come in casual clothes.

4. How is wedding celebrated in your culture.

Everyone has their own way of celebrating weddings. In our culture, the guests arrive before the bride and the groom. Next comes the groom,  sitting on a horse and all his relatives come along with him. After some times, comes the bride with her sisters beside her, like a queen and the groom makes her sit on the stage. Then the “jaimal” i.e the bride and groom share garlands with each other. Next on, the other ceremonies take place. It is after seven circumambulations that they are considered married couple.

5. What sort of gifts do people give to the bride and groom?

People mostly give gifts that will be helpful for the married couple in their married life. Some give crockery or dresses for the bride and groom or electronic items. There are even people who give money. But the most important thing is they all give blessings  and I think that is the most important gift anyone could give.
