IELTS CUE CARD # BUILDING WITH ARCHITECTURAL INTEREST

Sample Answer :

The Leaning Tower of Pisa also popularly known as Tower of Pisa is an interesting and amazing  structure situated in the Pisa city of Italy.  It is the third oldest structure in Pisa’s Cathedral Square and very famous for its unintended tilt to one side. The site is flocked by tourists all over the world and is considered a major attraction.

The height of the tower is around 183 feet. The width of the tower is higher in the lower part. The tower has 296 steps and offers a great architectural and artistic value to the world. The tilt of this tower was never planned. It occurred unintentionally. During the construction phase, the tilt was created due to the inadequate foundation on the soft ground. Later this tilt increased until the structure was stabilised. Around 200 years were taken to build this greatest structure.

There are some debates about the real architect of this world famous structure and it has been credited to Guglielmo and Bonanno Pisano who are considered to be the architects of this structure. But recent studies imply this credit to Diotisalvi as the original architect. This is still a never ending debate.

This structure has many historic significance and was one of the seven medieval wonder of the world. The structure was built initially by the people of Pisa to show the value and importance of the Pisa city and justify their place in the world. The plan included a cathedral, a baptistery, a bell tower and a cemetery. The construction began at around 1173 and completed in the middle of 1300.

This famous tower is not known only for the great beauty of its Romanesque architecture but also for its historical significance. It is of great cultural and social importance to its people. The famous astronomer Galileo Galilei is said to have dropped a cannon ball and a musket ball bot hat a time from the Tower of Pisa to prove that weight does not affect the dropping speed of an object. This place has scientific importance too.

This structure was listed in the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and had been very famous as one of the Seven Wonders of the Medieval World. I will surely like to visit it some day.

Sample Answer :

Travelling has been a favourite hobby for years. I love the idea of visiting new place sand experiencing new cultures and learning new things. The country that I have always wanted to go but have not visited yet is Italy. I’ve been dreaming of going to Italy since my childhood days. I’ll definitely visit the country as soon as I’m done with my college.

Italy is in Southern Europe. Rome, the capital of Italy is magnificently beautiful and also the leading political and religious centre of the western civilisation. It is also the primary centre of the both Roman Empire and the Christianity. I love history. I wish to visit the museums, arts, streets, cultural and other attractions and learn the origins and secrets about the place. Also, I want to go there to visit the Vatican City.

I have read lot of articles and heard some amazing stories about the culture and and history about the country and getting to see them with my own eyes them would be a great treat. There are plenty of things to start with: arts and exhibitions, museums, Colosseum, Leaning Tower of Pissa, Roman Forum, Florence Cathedral, St. Peter’s Basilica, Milan Cathedral, Sistine Chapel, Piazza SanMarco, Circus Maximus. I plan on visiting all of them on my visit.

Italy was celebrated as one of the most advanced territories once upon a time and has various historical sites to explore. I’ve researched about these places briefly and have inquired many friends who have visited the place. The desire to visit has inclined. I’m pretty positive about visiting this country in next year.

Sample Answer :

Speeches have always been a fun event to me.  I was particularly interested in public speaking since childhood.  I used to listen to lot of speeches on the radio and television. Speaking to a huge crowd requires lot of self-confidence. I remember lot of good speeches that I’ve heard in my life. Also I can recall some really bad speeches.

I wish to talk about one specific speech given to us at the national AIESEC conference by a UN Indian Ambassador. The speech was interesting, brief and very informative.

The speech was given by at the opening ceremony of the conference. He was giving a speech to brief us about the new sustainable development goals designed in the UN for the betterment of the world. He has been a part of the Indian panel that is associated with the development of the nation. He has been working with the UN from the last 5 years. He began his journey as a former volunteer from the IIT Delhi cell. He also inspired us to work for the society and his speech kept me awestruck. I understood the importance for empathy.

His speeches included lot of breath taking examples and view from different walks of people. He told us various stories of compassion and empathy. He had made a real effort to prepare a good speech that was funny, well-researched, engaging and genuinely heart-touching.  For example, he made us play this amazing ball game ice breaker, which helped  a lot to understand the various representatives better. It was a great way to ‘break the ice’ and involve everyone, and the results were hilarious.

I think the speech was outstanding as it involved everyone, shared funny (but not too private) stories. It was also not too long!  It held interest, and was appropriate for the us to engage.

The speech gave an insight on what effective communication can do and how it can help interact with people in a positive way.

Sample Answer

My hometown Dehradun is a small but vibrant city. Locals have access to a wide range of entertainment facilities such as sports centers, shopping malls and cinemas etc. Today, I’m going to talk about a very popular place which is visited by thousands of people every day.

It’s a huge shopping complex called the Pacific Mall. It was opened to the public in 2015. The building is located in a posh area of Dehradun. Young adults normally use their own mode of transport like car, bike or scooter to reach there. Some families prefer public transport as parking is quite expensive in the complex.

This shopping center is equipped with a 4-screen cinema, lots of branded shops, multicultural food courts and children’s play areas.  Concerts, music and dance competitions are also organized regularly. Depending upon the interest and the purpose of visiting the mall, people can decide what they wish to do in the complex. They can watch the latest films, enjoy delicious food from China, Thailand and Italy or participate in cultural programs. Shoppers can also get a fabulous shopping experience. Children too can have a lot of fun in designated play areas.

Another special feature of this place is that people can meet renowned writers, musicians and chefs on gazetted holidays like 15th August, 2nd October and 26th January and festivals. They can even give suggestions about who should be invited in the future. The public is duly informed about the upcoming events through adverts in local newspapers. Certainly, all these facilities make it an ideal place for all age groups. It’s is worth visiting.
