IELTS Cue Card # Making Notes

Making notes is one of those things that is very important in the cue card section of IELTS. Not only important, it is one of the trickiest part because what you are going to speak in this section depends entirely on the notes that you have prepared for this section. In this post, we will learn how to make effective notes, the kind of notes that will help you give a great cue card answer.

We call it making circles. Diagrams are the most easiest way to express something. So, if you know the topic and have a diagram in hand for that, explaining it is so much more easier. The cue card we are referring for this understanding is – FAVORITE EQUIPMENT

Brief Explanation – The cue card wanted you to speak off your favorite equipment, why do you like it, how do you use it and why is it important to you.

STEP 1

DRAW THE MAIN CIRCLE

Yes, you need to draw the first circle and write down the main topic for the cue card.

DRAW THE CIRCLES JOINING THE MAIN CIRCLE AND WRITE WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT(HERE THE USE).

See, here you are talking about computers and the three main things for which you need it are – entertainment, blogging and coding. Now, when this is done, it is time for you to delve deeper.

STEP 3

DELVING DEEPER

Now, when it comes to blogging, why do you need it? Well, there is content that needs to be uploaded and then there are photos and then videos.

Now, when it comes to entertainment, well you need to watch movies, youtube, gaming and then facebook. So, write them down.

When it comes to coding, you use the computer to code on python , C, C++ and then you even make use of Oracle. So, write them down. Finally, you will have something like this –

SAMPLE ANSWER

Rice is that one thing that we as Indians truly love and fried rice is the students only remedy of hunger. But, what I thought of fried rice was simply rice with onions and the other things fried together. It was only few months back that I read about the Thai fried rice. Some people consider it the world’s best fried rice.

To make the fried rice, Thai people use jasmine rice and the rice contains meat, egg, onions, garlic and tomato. Although it is has some regional variants they all are considered to be great in taste. On reading more about it, I figured out that they serve it along with cucumber slices, tomato slices, lime and coriander.

The reason I would love to eat it is because I want to know how can someone make a simple thing so different . After all, for years I thought fried rice is made in the same manner all around the world.

The Thai people have this thing about them, they make things like chowmein and fried rice very delicious and I’d like to look at their way of making things that for some time I thought was just a hostler last hope of survival.

The world is rapidly changing and from times of stone age we have moved towards the age when we are surrounded by the cutting-edge technology. In today’s world if someone is hesitant in using computer, he/she is likely to lag behind other people. However, this is not the reason why I love computers. My love towards computers is because I believe that they have made our lives easier like never before. Not only this, computers have opened up so many new career prospects that its absence is felt the hard way.

I personally use computers for either coding or writing. There is this thing about coding, it makes you feel as if you are the creator and it is truly an amazing experience. Even more, being a blogger, I need to put content on my site and do things like video editing and other stuff. Having a computer allows me to have the best of both worlds. To an extent, it is actually my bread earner. Not only this, when combined with Internet, there is almost nothing that one cannot achieve. To an extent, the device has actually made me a cyber addict.

Sometimes I wonder if I don’t have computers, there would nothing else that I will be able to do because it consumes so much of me. However, I do have a love for reading so may be I will join some publishing house where articles are printed the usual way. Or may be I could work more on my badminton skills and do something there.

Describe a person, much older than you, whom you admire:

Sample Answer – One

It has been a pleasure to be able to meet so many great people around. Right from work to school to the place where I live. There have been people who have been successful in the eyes of others and then the ones who were right for themselves. But, the one person who I admire is Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple. Although, I have never met him in person, but I know about him from the books and documentaries made on him.

There is something about Steve Jobs that is so amazing that one could just be spell bound by him. From his story to the way he talks and the attitude that he carries, it is almost amazing. And the one thing that I really like about him is that was a born fighter. He never gave up and it is so amazing.

Anyone else in his shoes, would have easily quit when he was kicked out of his company but getting kicked out of his company did not stopped Steve Jobs, he went out and tried his fortune in other ventures and ultimately came back to Apple and then brought back Apple to what it is now. A company we look forward to. A company with principles that are so inspiring. He in so many ways has taught our generation how to lead life.

Sample Answer – Two

There have been several people who have influenced me in so many ways. But, the one person I think who actually brought about a change in the way I think is my father. There is nothing particular as to why I admire him but there are so many things that make me fond of him.

I have never seen a man more hardworking and selfless than him. He would go out and do things right and that is what he has taught us. Starting from a broken family to unfaithful relationships to broken trust to so much more. Being born in a poor family and then rising to do what he has actually done, I think it is truly amazing. There are others like Bill Gates, Sachin Bansal and Indira Nooyi who people think to be successful and yes they are but sometimes I believe had my father also got the right environment, where people would have pushed him forward rather than backward, he might also have had a bungalow near the beach.

But, inspite of that, in spite of the fact that his family has always been against him and there have so many struggles, the one thing that I love and admire about my father is that he has always been very positive. Positive about the things around him, about his life and his future which I believe is truly amazing.

 

Tips:

There are so many people we come across, so many of them from whom we learn things and then there are people whom we admire. In today’s cue card, talk about someone who you admire.

You can spend 2-3 minutes figuring out the points that you are going to say. Once you are ready, go on and hit the target. While practicing make sure that you don’t give up on the first attempt, you need to try as many times as you can, record it and then evaluate yourself. Make sure your last attempt is the your best one.
