few things to gain a higher score in IELTS

Sujish is a 31 year-old native Malayalam speaker from India. He got an overall Band 8 in IELTS (with an amazing 9 in Listening) and became one of the winners in our IELTS results competition in March. Here are a few things that Sujish did and recommends that you do to gain a higher score in IELTS:
He says
Listening

Listening was never a problem, except for handling the tension in the first few minutes of the test. I am a regular viewer of English movies and English TV series. However, I practiced for the test before the exam to gain experience with the kind of questions that may be given.

While watching the movies, sometimes I used to switch on the subtitles in order to clearly understand the conversation. I never felt any difficulties with understanding the monologues on TV (for example the Discovery channel and National Geographic).

Reading

I am a regular reader of English newspapers. This helped me to complete the reading test before the allowed time. During the exam, I read the questions first and then went to read the paragraphs; this helped me identify the area where the answers to the questions reside.

Speaking

The only difficult part in this sub-test was handling the tension during the interview. I was able to achieve this by having a friendly talk with my IELTS examiner for a few minutes before starting the exam.

I deliberately used some phrases that I learned after registering for the exam. Moreover, I got a friend to interview me at least once every two days through Skype.

Writing

Writing is the difficult part of the test for me since I am a software engineer and I have not written anything on the paper after my graduation. My handwriting is the worst I have ever seen.
Update: Sujish asked the IELTS test centre to re-evaluate his Writing section, and as a result his score went up from 6.5 to 7.
Congratulations to Sujish on getting the score he really deserves!

Sample Answer

In my life, I have received a lot of news that has affected me in different manners. There has been good news that made me feel elated, while some times brought discouraging news with them. One such memorable time when I received good news was when my elder cousin decided to get married.

He is paternal uncle’s son and they were trying to find a suitable match for him for the last two months. They finalized the bride during this January and when everything was decided, they broke the news to us. I was elated by this good news and felt happy for my brother.

This news was overwhelming as my brother has faced a lot of adversities moving up in life. He pursued a very tough degree in management while working alongside. He has lived a very simple life without any luxuries in order to save money for starting up his own business. He has now finally settled down his company and works day and night to progress.

He was very happy while giving me the news of his marriage as he had met the prospective bride and spoke to her at length. He had come to know that their thoughts matched and they had a lot of common interests. I am genuinely happy for my brother as his dream of starting a family has finally come true and we are excited to welcome one more member into our family.

Sample Answer

My country has been through a lot of tough and great times and our calendars are marked with many important dates that correspond to many important events that India has witnessed. Possibly the most important date is 15 August 1947 and signifies a very important feeling of patriotism for each and every Indian. It was on this day that India got independence from the then 200-year-old British rule after innumerable sacrifices.

Furthermore, it was not a result any one person in particular. Thousands of important and influential people from villages, towns, and cities all over India had come together holding hands and raising their voice in unison against the oppressive British rule during the time. It was their efforts and the encouraging support of the common public that had led India to achieve its freedom.

My grandparents have told me various stories from the time and I have always been awestruck while listening to them and getting to know of the struggles and hardships of the people back then.

This day is celebrated by each Indian and inspires us to make our country proud and help it stand out on the world map. Indians embrace this day not only to celebrate the country’s freedom but also to pay homage and tribute to the sacrifices of all the freedom fighters who gave up their lives for the country’s sake. This day teaches us to envision a better India with each passing day of our lives and motivates every Indian to work towards it as a common goal.

IELTS Speaking Task Cue Card: Talk about a historical period you want to know more about.

IELTS Speaking Task Cue Card:

Talk about a historical period you want to know more about.

  • Which period is it?
  • When did it occur?
  • Why are you interested in it?
  • Who all were involved in it?
Sample Answer

India has been through a lot of historical events under various rulers and governments. This has led to the long and highly interesting history of my country to be written for everyone to know and learn from. I am fond of reading history in general but the most fascinating period for me is from the year 1940 to 1947. It was the last phase of the Indian independence movement while being under British rule. The British rule in India lasted for nearly two hundred years. It was in 1947 on the fifteenth of August that India had finally gained its freedom from the oppressive and tyrannical British rule.

I am interested in gaining knowledge about all the proceedings that took place in this period as they increase my curiosity the most. I came across information on this era in my eighth-grade history book. Since then, I have spoken to my grandparents at length on this topic. They have told me many stories of freedom fighters standing up against the British army for their rights, apart from many of their own experiences during that time. I have also read many books and watched various movies and documentaries on this subject.

This period is full of various occurrences on a mass scale and involves sacrifices of innumerable freedom fighters who gave away everything to fight the British rule. During this time, our country was divided into two separate nations, and a new country named Pakistan came into existence. It is indeed one of the most important periods in the country’s history.
