Common European Framework

Common European Framework is the method used to testing the English of an individual. All English exams, either TOEFL or IELTS follow it. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEF or CEFR) was put together by the Council of Europe as a way of standardizing the levels of language exams in different regions.
There are six levels ; A1,A2,B1,B2,C1,C2.

Let us understand what do these levels mean.

C2 # MASTERY
You are called a master in Engish if you can understand with ease virtually anything heard or read. If you can summarize information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Also, if you can express yourself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations.
C1 # Effective operational proficiency or advanced
If you get a C1 in your test you probably are someone who can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning. It means you have a flair for expressing language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Even more you produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
B2 # Vantage or upper intermediate
You lie in B2 if you can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in your field of specialization. It means that you can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party
B1 # Threshold or intermediate
If you get a B1 it simply means that you can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. You can deal with most of the situations while travelling to other places. You can use simple connected sentences and can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
A2 # Elementary stage
This level means that you can communicate basic things about yourself in English. You can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance.
A1 # Very Basic User
It means you can introduce yourself or can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.

You are looking for a part time job. Write a letter to an employment agency. In your letter include:-

  • Introduce yourself
  • Explain what sort of job you would like?
  • Say what experience and skills you have?

Write at least 150 words.

Answer

Dear Sir/ Madam,

This is in reference to part time employment which I am seeking for myself. I have recently completed my bachelor degree in retail management from a reputed college. I have a few months experience as an intern working for an apparel company as part of my degree.

Now, I want to take up post-graduation and work part time in the retail sector alongside my education. As I would be busy with studies, the most suitable kind of job would be to take up part time work in retail as it would provide me with valuable experience related to my course and fetch me some money as well.

I have excellent communication and marketing skills with a knack of talking to people. I also have relevant computer knowledge required in this area with a decent level of management ability as well. It would be highly appreciated if such job options could be suggested to me as soon as possible.

Yours Sincerely,

Pooja Duggal

You Can Do It

IELTS is an exam that can be given by anyone who wishes to go to abroad. And by “anyone” I literally mean anyone, even the ones with special requirements. So if you are gifted in million ways, but don’t have the other gifts like visual or hearing, IELTS makes sure you still live the life you have dreamt of.

Test centres make every effort to cater for candidates with special needs, to enable them to best understand questions and
tasks and to give their answers. For example- If a candidate requires a modified version of the test, e.g. Braille,
they must give the test center three months’ notice or the one who require special administrative arrangements only to be made, e.g. extra time, they must give the test centre six weeks’ notice.

CANDIDATES WITH VISUAL DIFFICULTIES
If a candidate has visual issues British Council offers them-

  1. enlarged print and Braille test papers
  2. an amanuensis to write answers
  3. a Braille word-processor
CANDIDATES WITH HEARING DIFFICULTIES
If a candidate suffers from partial hearing loss, but can hear from headphones or special amplification equipment, they can be given it, if they ask for taking the Listening test.
Even more, a lip reading version of the Listening test is also available in which an instructor reads the transcript to the candidate.
However, if an individual suffers from extreme hearing or speaking difficulties, he/she will be exempted from giving this test and the overall score reflects this. It means they will be granted exemption and in that case, the otherwise standards for applying will be set accordingly.
Never Give Up

LEARNING DIFFICULTIES
If candidates have dyslexia or another specific learning difficulty, they may need extra time to complete one or more of the tests. They are offered an extra time of 30 minutes for the completion of reading and writing tests. They, however must apply before hand.
ON THE SPOT ISSUE
If the candidate is genuinely ill during the test, he/she must bring it to the notice of the test supervisor. Help can only be provided if one reports their illness on the day of test.
