TELEVISION AS POWERFUL EDUCATIONAL TOOL OR MINDLESS ENTERTAINMENT?

Some people believe that television is a powerful educational tool. Other people believe that television is nothing more than mindless entertainment and should be discouraged.

To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Discuss both views and give your own opinion. Provide examples and supporting evidences to back up your opinion on this subject.

SAMPLE ANSWER-

Television is a versatile tool as it can be used for different means such as communication, ideas and skills. Due to the popularity of television, there are varying views on television being a positive force or a negative force on the education of our community.

On a comforting prospect, television has played the function of a supportive and reinforcement device. Being an entertainment oriented medium, this device has the ability to provide a more appealing and visual experience to learning to students of all age groups. It is working as an effective tool in education, it helps to accomplish the aims and objectives of education. For example, introducing Smart Learning as part of the academic curriculum helps students to retain knowledge for a longer period of time. Educational channels such as National Geography and Discovery Channel also give a lot of educational information.

On the contrary, it is believed that television is nothing but senseless entertainment. Learning through traditional means of education is preferable rather than gaining brief knowledge with the help of a digital device. For instance, reading a newspaper and watching it on television is not the same. The in-depth knowledge that the newspaper provides is lacking in news flashes displayed on the television. There are several channels available on television that do not show appropriate content.

As an outcome, people prefer gaining knowledge through technology but it is not a substitute for written education. Therefore, conventional and technical knowledge both play an equivalent role in the education system of our society.

IELTS Writing Task 2 – Essay

In some countries, private cars are now banned from certain city centers.

What are the advantages of such a system and do you think that this is something that most cities should adopt? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your knowledge or experience.

Sample Answer

Driving is a real status symbol among many people. Cars and private vehicles have made human life easier and convenient to a great extent. But in this metropolitan age, while experiencing comfort travelling, we also face the problem of traffic congestion. A lot of countries are taking efficient steps to improve pollution levels by imposing many restrictions on vehicles. In my perspective, the prohibition of private cars alone is not a long term solution as it requires varied methods like upgrading public transport facilities and the infrastructure of these metropolia.

Undoubtedly, personal cars are comparatively suitable than public transportation, and the majority of the locals are accepting this challenge of compulsory use of public transit. Many European cities, such as London, have started implementing outright bans so driving around Central London will charge a heavy congestion fee. Therefore, half of the roads in London has been declared as ‘pedestrian priority’ zone. Besides London, Paris has also applied the no personal vehicle rule in which they have banned cars made before 1997 and also initiate people to use go car-free on weekends by using bicycles for travelling. These efforts have greatly reduced vehicle emission in several parts of the world.

However, there is other side of the coin. Completely restricting the four-wheelers from the city centers would negatively affect the overall economy of the country. A few drawbacks of this scheme are that it would restrict the freedom of the people by controlling their fundamental right. It would also affect the disabled category as they will have to face the inconvenience of taking public transport that does not have any special facilities for them. Banning private vehicles in city centers can prove to be heavy on people’s pocket too.

From my personal standpoint, banning private cars completely is not a wise idea to control environmental issues. Therefore, the government can encourage to use efficient means of public transportation. They should also spread the awareness to persuade the individuals to car-pool by restricting odd and even license plates on alternating days. Cities like Madrid and Oslo are successful in eliminating vehicle emission and taking diesel cars off their roads.

IELTS Writing task 2 Essay # Reasons for sedentary lifestyle and its solutions.

IELTS Writing Task-2 # Essay

Despite a large number of gyms, a sedentary lifestyle is gaining popularity in the contemporary world. What reasons are associated with this? What solutions can you suggest?

Sample Answer

Undoubtedly, recent times have seen the establishment of a number of gyms and other fitness institutions promoting physical activities. However, an inactive way of living plays an active part in many people’s life, throughout the world. This has led to the degradation of health and fitness of numerous people. This essay will briefly discuss causes that have amounted to this sedentary lifestyle and also provide some solutions to counter these problems.

To commence with, the most prominent reason for rising the issue of unhealthy lifestyle is academic success being valued more as compared to physical health from a very young age. This often leads to people by spending minimal amount of time to focus on their fitness.  Furthermore, in the maximum number of jobs, employees are required to sit at one place for longer durations of time. The culture of “desk jobs” has drastically reduced the amount of physical activity in one’s life.  Moreover, with the emergence of entertainment industry, people are more inclined towards the inactive lifestyle. Lastly, availability of food, grocery items and other basic need products on the doorstep have contributed a major share to a lethargic lifestyle.

However, these difficulties can easily be dealt by taking a few measures. Firstly, promoting health benefits among children. Making young minds aware of benefits of healthy habits can increase the level of fitness among children. Also, including yoga and other fitness activities as a part of curriculum can also be beneficial for them. Secondly, gyms should be made in the office complexes with adequate facilities. This step can encourage people to start physical activities especially for those whose job timings do not allow them to work out lately. For an example here, according to a survey held in two metro cities, Delhi and Mumbai, of my country, this has been noticed that after introducing health facilities within office premises, that helps people to drastically reduce the health related issues. As a result, they have become more active towards their work.

To conclude, today’s academic centred as well as busy life schedule of many individuals have contributed a large proportion to the lethargic lifestyle. However, I truly believe that people can be motivated to engage themselves in physical activities.

IELTS Writing Task 2 # WHO DO PEOPLE HATE ADVERTISEMENTS?

IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay

WHO DO PEOPLE HATE ADVERTISEMENTS?

  • Companies spend millions on advertisements every year. Nowadays, many people do not like to watch advertisements.
  • Why do you think this is the case?
  • What can be done to improve this?

Sample Answer

Living in an industrial era, advertisements play a major part in the marketing of a company. In a recent survey conducted in the US, it was proved that companies invest nearly 8-10 % of their gross revenue on marketing and advertisement. Spending a hefty amount on advertisements may help them achieve their objectives, and improve their interaction with the customers. But most of the people in the market find advertisements intrusive and futile.

There are many reasons why people find advertisements unnecessary. The primary reason is that many advertisements show unrealistic scenarios just to promote a particular product. The customers cannot relate to these situations. For instance, unfeasible scenes like infants promoting financial and insurance companies. The secondary reason is that many food brands blatantly falsify the product by hiring food photographers in order to attract and appeal to their customers while the actual food is not so captivating. Lastly, some advertisements exaggerate the benefits of the products making them look overpromising. For instance, many fitness or beauty brands overvalue the benefits of certain products.

People of society would prefer more realistic and practical advertisements and the ones that wouldn’t interrupt their work or entertainment. Interruption in any form would disturb the frequency of the viewer due to which people end up skipping these advertisements. For instance, advertisements that appear while watching a video on YouTube.

In order to improve advertising efficiency, the companies need to understand their audience and design advertisements about more realistic situations people can relate to. The companies also need to realize that some of these advertisements might interfere with the functioning of the people, especially the online advertisements that pop-up on the internet.

In this modern era, it is impossible to avoid advertisements completely as they play a vital part in the marketing and promotion of an organization. Therefore, companies should work on offering the true value of the product while advertising them. These organizations should also invest less in the marketing of the product and more on improving the quality of that product as it would be more fruitful.
