Cue Card Sample Answer:

Gifts play an important role in our lives. Today, I’m going to talk about a present which I gave to my cousin. He works as a marketing executive in a multinational company. Recently, he was promoted to the head of the sales department. To celebrate his achievement, he threw a party and warmly invited me to his house. As per the traditions and customs of our society, I decided to buy a present for him as a token of my warm wishes. For this, I visited a nearby mall but due to the inadequate collection I couldn’t find the best suitable item.

Finally, I found a multi-brand store nearby and I looked for my choice there. Within no time, the salesman showed me an eye-catching set of cufflinks, tie and a pocket square with an attractive packing. That was exactly what I wanted, so I finalized it immediately and I requested the shopkeeper to wrap the same in a decorative wrapping paper. On the eve of the party, I presented it to my cousin. To my surprise, he liked it so much that he wore it on the party night. This gift was unique for several reasons. Firstly, the amount of time and energy I spent in purchasing it. Secondly, it served the purpose and everyone  praised for its appealing color and design. Not to mention, my cousin was looking outstanding with the tie because it was a perfect match with his well-designed black suit.

IELTS Cue Card # Course In College

College is the time when we shape ourselves. When we decide what are our areas of interest and what are the things that we want to do in our life. This is the time of becoming. Some do it by indulging in extra curricular activities, while others do it by taking some courses in college. Today, let us have a look at some of the cue card questions related to a course one took in college.

Describe a course you took in your college or university.

You should say:

  • What it was
  • When you took it
  • What you learned from this course

And explain why you took this course.

Sample Answer One

I remember we had a course in my Bachelors of UNIX. There were several other courses as well, but for some reasons I was fascinated by this course. It was great to learn UNIX, because understanding how it works made me understand how an operating system work and that in turn helped me in understanding how computers worked.

I took the course in my fourth semester of Bachelors in Technology. The course taught me how to write commands to make things work in the system and the commands were not the single lined or word commands. It was more like mixing and matching the commands to get the required output. There would be days when I would just worry about a single command and how to get a particular output. And then there were days in which I would break the entire code and try to run the code in pieces because of some error.

It was tough but it was fun. The feeling when the program ran or when I was able to solve that one problem, it was fun and nothing can take that feeling. I remember learning lot of things from this course and they are still in use by  me. But, what I learnt the most was how to learn things. It is not about settling in time and fixing the effort. It is more about working for it until you get the result. You need to solve those errors and bugs until you get the required result and it was a true and amazing lesson learnt.

When I look back at it, I think the reason that I took the course was because I fell in love with how simple commands dictate the entire computer industry and then it is about the permutation and combination of these simple commands that make up the entire big commands through which we are doing things. It was great I believe and every person should definitely learn the in and out of an operating system.

Sample Answer Two

I went to a college where we did not had any freedom to take courses of our choice but there was a event that took place for a length of around one month and I was part of it. Later on, I was awarded with a certificate for taking the course.

It was a travel event. So, the college needed volunteers who could travel around the city in weekends and get to know the details of the city. Not just the historical places that are there to visit, but the areas where poor people lived, the red light areas, the ones which no one would go to, meet people who no one would ever go and meet. I think for me it was a course because I believe no one can teach you better than experience. And for me that was a great experience.

I was part of a team, where I had with me two more people, one was a photographer and the other was a writer. We went on to meet people, see places, interact with different people, write down things, click photographs and then come back after two days and in the entire weekdays would go on writing about the events that happened in the weekends. It was an amazing experience, we came to know more about the city an in the mean while more about ourselves.
There were times when we felt like losing and the next moment was when we won. People initially did not wanted to talk to us and then we found out ways different to make them comfortable and get to know about their lives.

The one thing that I learnt from this course that perseverance is truly the key to success. If you are not persistent, there is no point of success.

IELTS Cue Card Sample Answer # Career

Describe the job/ career you have or hope to have.
You should say:

  • what the job is
  • what is involves
  • why you would chose it

and explain why you are interested in this job.

Sample Answer:

I love travelling, reading and writing. So, if ever I get a chance to switch my career from an IT professional it would definitely be of a traveler. I want to be the person who travels a lot, makes memories, meet lot of people and then write about it. My story has lot of stories in it and lot of characters and emotions. I wish, if ever I write  story about myself, it be of lot of colors, experiences and moments.

Travelling involves basically travelling to lot of new places, exploring it and meeting new people. It is about getting to know about new cultures and new ideas. There are so many stories of our country that are hidden in the hearts of people and these are the stories that I want to explore. I wish that someday I am able to show the world the true India.

There is no particular reason why I chose it, it was neither for money nor for fame. The only reason that I want to travel all around the world is because I want to know people and their stories and what they feel about things. I just love it. You know when people express their fears, their joys, their emotions. It is so much more exciting. And then when you visit a new place, there is so much promising in it. You get to know about the history of the place and for some reasons the present starts making so much more sense when you know about your past.

Even more, it gives you that feeling of freedom. So, you are not associated with a particular job and there is no boss. You are your own boss, you need not to listen to anyone but your heart and it is very exciting for me. To do things, not because you are told to do them, but because you feel like doing them. There is no rationals behind them, anymore. It is so much more of heart and so much more fulfilling.

What is the most famous sector in your country?

Most of the people in my country are associated with Information technology. So, you would find lot of software engineers in my country. Apart from them, there are people who prefer banking sector or may be the teaching sector. However, in the recent times there has been a substantial change in the way people make career choices. Now, we find lot of people interested in going to photography or making a career out of writing and it is amazing. Because there are so many more creative heads out there.

Do you think people in your country are paid according to the work they do?

Well, for the most part I think people in my country are paid less when compared to the ones of foreign countries. People out here are much more talented but when it comes to salary, often people work at less wages and stressful days. It, I believe, is one of the major reason why people prefer going to companies that offer onsite opportunities or may be after some time start working for biggies that offer much more salary.

IELTS Cue Card Sample Answer # Historical Event

Describe an important historical event in your country.

You should say :

  • when it happened
  • what is its significance
  • what were the important people involved in it

Also, say why is it important to the history of your country.

India is the largest democracy in the world and the largest country in South East Asia. But,  India has not been democratic since time immemorial. We were under the rule of British for almost 200 years and it was after a long freedom fight that India became independent. In the midnight of 15 August 1947, when the world was asleep, India woke up to a new freedom, with the first Prime Minister as Jawaharlal Nehru.

But, what was the most happy moment for the entire country, required so much of effort and so may people becoming martyrs. No matter, how many people we say responsible for our freedom, I believe the first hammer that was struck to Britishers was by Rani Laxmi Bai in 1857. The revolt of 1857 was the first time that the entire India united against the British Rule. The revolt started from Meerut where some sepoys started a rebellion against the Britishers and soon it spread out to the different parts of the country, involving Rani Laxmi Bai, Mangal Pandey, Birjis Qadr,Babu Kunwar Singh and many more.

There was no one particular reason for the rebellion but many of them. Britishers had for a long time tried to rule the country indirectly, taking away all the resources of the country and weakening the internal power of the country, not allowing the rulers to rule. Although, at that time, India was being ruled by different forces, when the rebellion took place, the entire country went to Bahadur Shah Jafar.

Although, India lost that battle, but Britishers realized that if they want to rule the country, they need to rule from Delhi and Indians realized that they too can fight against Britishers. It was after this battle that several groups started coming in to fight against Britishers for freedom, which we definitely got in 1947.

What do you think we can learn by studying the events of the past?

We learn from our mistakes, and just like individuals learn from the mistakes made by themselves or by others, we as entire society can learn from the mistakes that we have made in the past. Also, there are things that we can repeat that were good in history. To be able to repeat and prevent it is very important to know the history and knowing history is not about knowing the names and characters but about understanding the entire flow of data.

What important events do you think might take place in the future?

With respect to my country, I believe there are certain events that are bound to happen in the future. One of them is the strengthening of women in our country. There is a certain degree of respect and love given to women in our country but there are certain areas in which we lack in terms of equality. I believe that in future there will be more of woman power coming up. Also, it is very likely possible that the matter of Kashmir will be solved in the future. It is high time that India and Pakistan are fighting over the case of Kashmir, causing distress to both Kashmir, Pakistan and India. I hope and believe that the decision will be made very soon.

Do you think internet is a good place to learn about history?

Definitely yes. For the initial startup, I do believe that internet is a great place to learn about history. You can learn from different sources, for free and figure out if you are really interested in learning about history. When that happens, one can very easily go for a formal course. Even though, if people are not interested in going for formal courses, one can learn about it from different websites and you tube and so much more.
