Sample Answer

This just happened yesterday. I was going to meet my friend after a gap of three years and she asked me to meet her outside the railway station. While waiting for her, I got a text that she got stuck in a traffic jam and that she would be half an hour late. There was a Railway Museum just around the corner and having nothing else to do, I decided to take a look around the museum.

It was an old building with Gothic architecture. The entrance was huge and the gallery was unending. There were several artifacts from different eras, and since I’m not a big fan of history, they weren’t of much interest to me. The evolution of railways, however, did impress me. It was amazing to see how simple a steam engine was when it was used for the first time, and how quickly it has evolved in just over a century. Since I used to collect train models when I was young, my childhood passion seemed to rekindle upon looking at all those locomotives. The building was maintained very well by the authorities, and other than the museum it housed shops and pubs as well. The exit opened in an alleyway, and I had to walk around the block to get back to the front door near which my friend asked me to wait.

Looking back at my visit, I don’t think I would have ever taken time out of my busy schedule to see this amazing museum had I not been wandering around waiting for my friend. But then, like they say, “Everything happens for a reason”.

Vocab Words

  • Gothic- Kind of medieval architecture
  • Rekindle- Revive something lost
  • Alleyway- A narrow path
  • Wander- Walk in a leisurely way

IELTS Cue Card Sample Questions # Ownership

There are many things that we own, the things that we buy out of love or sometimes because of necessities. But, then there are also times when we do not need those items any longer. For instance, it could be a camera that you got but then you got bored of it or maybe did not had the chance to use it. In this cue card, we are talking about a thing that an individual owned but would like to remove.

Talk about an own thing that you would like to remove. You should say –

  • what is the thing?
  • when did you buy it?
  • why would you like to remove it?

also, explain, why did you own it in the first place.

SAMPLE ANSWER

I have owned a lot of things over a period of time, sometimes a camera, then a phone, books, but out of all of them I think it is time for me to say goodbye to some of my books! Being a bibliophile I have a collection of a lot of books and magazines which I have kept over a period of time with me. There are certain fiction books, non-fiction, and autobiographies. Some of the magazines that I bought either from airports or bookstores.

Initially, I thought I should keep all of them for the entire lifetime. But, with time I have realized that it is a good idea to give away the books that I have read already and gained the required knowledge. This helps in bringing room for some other books.

Keeping all of the books for the lifetime create a lot of clutter in the room that I live in, leaving no space for other things. Sometimes I feel overburdened surrounded by these many books around me. I do love books and reading them and have had a good collection of all the books, most of which I have read twice. I think the time has come to let go of some of the books.

IELTS CUE CARD # TALK ABOUT A TV SERIES YOU REMEMBER

Sample Answer

In this day and age, there are hundreds of TV channels broadcasting news, soap operas, reality shows, sports events etc. There is something for the people of varied interests and choices. Here I would like to talk about an American fantasy drama series called “game of thrones”. I began watching it few years back when one of our family friends recommended it to us. It’s an adaptation of A song of ice and fire, George R. R. Martin’s series of fantasy novels, the first of which is A game of thrones. It has an ensemble cast estimated to be the largest on television. The series premiered on HBO in 2011 and its seventh season ended in 2017. The concluding season 8 would be broadcasted next year. The story revolves around the iron throne of the seven kingdoms and follows a web of alliances and conflicts among the noble families fighting for the throne. Game of thrones has attracted record viewership including active broad international fan base.
The series is filmed in one the most magnificent and breathtakingly beautiful locations in the UK, Canada, Iceland, morocco, Spain and the US. The costumes and sets take the viewers back in time and captivate them throughout the serial. The series exhibit the most extraordinary cinematography skills, animation and graphics including the giants and dragons which seem absolutely real. Even a few video games have come up inspired by the game of thrones. The only thing which I dislike is excessive violence in some of the serials. (255 Words)

FOLLOW UP QUESTIONS
Q1. Do you think most people watch TV for education or for entertainment?
ANS. I personally feel that majority of viewers actually watch TV in their leisure time for entertaining themselves. Most of the channels on TV broadcast soaps, reality shows and sport events rather than education based shows. However, there are some channels exclusively telecasting lectures and tutorials which can be accessed by paying some extra subscription amount.

Q2. Should TV play a role in educating children? How?
ANS. Yes, TV can definitely be used as a medium to educate children. Mass media like television can have a profound impact on the young minds. If I talk about certain channels like Discovery science and National geographic, they have a whole range of knowledgeable shows not only for adults but for children also. When the young minds actually see what they have studied theoretically , they understand and remember the ideas in a much better way. Also, programmes on animals and environment make them sensitive about their conservation which is a must in today’s circumstances.

Q3. Do you think TV viewing habits change as people get older?
ANS. It’s undeniably true that as people age , their day to day routine and interests also change. The same is true as far as choice of contents of programmes and the time when they want to watch TV is concerned. While toddlers watch cartoons , teenagers have a keen interest in music and sports. Then, in adulthood, the focus is towards news and politics. Similarly, the elderlies like watching religion based channels.
