IELTS Cue Card 2017 Questions # Decision

Often in life we make decisions, other times people make decisions for us. This time we are having a look at the recent IELTS speaking cue card that talks about a decision that the individual disagrees with.

Describe a decision that you disagreed with. You should say –

  • who made the decision
  • what was the decision for and who was impacted
  • did you express your opinion

Also, explain, what you believed should have been the decision.

SAMPLE ANSWER 1

An year back, when I was working for an organisation, I was part of an employee committee. So, all the grievances of the employees were taken by us to the HRs. I remember, a ultimatum was given out that all the employees will have to pay for the parking even though a proper parking was not available. This brought lot of rage in the employees and we felt that too. Because asking an employee to pay for the parking of his or her vehicle for the work of the company felt unfair.

We had a meeting soon with the HR and they gave their own justification and we gave ours. Ultimately, it was informed that such decision are often taken for the larger good and we must go with it. Although, I couldn’t do anything about it, I really felt it was  a wrong decision made on part of the company. Because decisions like these portray how less the big boss cares for the rest.

In my opinion, the company should have first built the parking and showed her employees the benefits and then could have probably asked for a minimal charge. Imposing a decision did not go well with employees creating sense of injustice among everyone.

SAMPLE ANSWER 2

As we grow up, we realise that there is nothing wrong. Only two rights and we have to choose the one for ourselves. One of my friend once took a decision of breaking up with a boy she loved for reasons that I felt were invalid. Everything was going fine one day when the boy stopped talking for no reasons at all. She tried asking him for the behaviour change but he never gave an answer.

However, after that they again patched up and went about being in a relationship for a month, before she finally decided to break up. I think the decision was wrong, because instead of understanding each other, they both decided to end a relationship. I believe it takes time to build bonds and when broken they leave scars. Ending up something beautiful without knowing the right answer was not what I felt should have been done.

It could be possible that the boy was going through some tough time and all he needed was some space. Surely he did not talked about it, but looking back I think it was their test of love, which they failed.

IELTS Cue Card Sample Questions # Adventurous Person

There are so many times in our lives that we wish to do certain things in life, sometimes go high or may be do something we never thought of. Doing things that we are not comfortable doing is what makes who we are. This time in the IELTS cue card we are talking about an adventurous person.

Describe an adventurous person you know.

You should say –

  • who the person is
  • how you know the person
  • what risks the person takes

And explain why you think that person likes to take risks.

SAMPLE ANSWER 1

Talking of adventure, the one person that comes to my mind is my brother, David Miller. In times when we thought about jumping off the walls, I remember he went  river rafting. Initially, we all were so scared that we tried manipulating him to drop the idea. But he did it and came out stronger. Ever since he has been part of lot many adventurous sports. However, it is not just about playing those sports out, what he has learnt is how to take tough decisions in life. So, when all of us were busy confused on whether we should do certain things or not, he did it.

Recently, he left a very cushioned job to have his own company. I think this is more of a real adventure, the one that effects lot of things and one that requires patience and confidence. In his words, he never takes risk, he does what he thinks is right and then does it all the way no matter how uncomfortable he gets in it.

SAMPLE ANSWER 2

Taking risks requires lot of courage, be it for any sport or for that matter in life. One adventurous person I can think of is a friend of mine Avinash. He has been one of those few people that I met who remained calm on the surface but paddled hard beneath. Talking to him one feels like the only thing that he does is sleep. But, he has been at some of the most amazing places one could think of and done really crazy things.

I remember him telling me how once he sneaked out of his house for a trip to Leh and on reaching called back his parents. He was in 12th grade then. Recently, when I met him he has become a traveller and for earning takes people to people they have never thought of.

I think it is not just about going to the exciting places that makes him adventurous but then doing something that people never thought him to be doing and taking it all over is what makes him audacious.

IELTS Cue Card Sample Answer # Presenter

Have you ever wondered how your life would be without any TV or radio? How the cricket matches must have felt without the amazing commentary of Ravi Shastri? And those amazing shows that we watch on television. Have you ever thought if you have liked them even without their presenters. This time we are looking at a cue card that talks about the television presenters.

Describe a TV or radio presenter.
You should say:

  • who is s/he
  • what programme s/he presents
  • how s/he presents the program

and explain why you like / dislike him/ her.

SAMPLE ANSWERS 1

The one name that hits me when thinking about presenters is of Oprah Winfrey. I think she has been one of the best and the most successful anchors of our times. Her show “The Oprah Winfrey Show” has been the highest rated television program of all times. It was on top 1 for around 25 years and it does need some talent to pull that off.

The reason I liked the show and its entertainer was because it was not just about having a talk and letting people relax over a cup of tea. The show told people inspiring stories, featured book clubs, had self-improvement segments, and philanthropic forays into world events. It was not just about making money but more of using the powerful tool of media into something good.

The reason Oprah was successful was because when she says with expressions. In her talk shows, it feels as if two friends are sharing a story over a cup of tea and we get to listen to it. The emotional connect that she is able to make, I think makes her and her show amazing.

SAMPLE ANSWERS 2

Talking of radio, Ameen Sayani is the person who has pulled off a great deal with Indian radio. He is known for the Binaca Geetmala program of hits over the airwaves of Radio Ceylon. People remember him and imitate him for his “Behno or Bhaiyo” meaning sisters and brothers. Not only Binaca Geetmala, Ameen Sayani has presented over many shows nationally and internationally.

Binaca Geetmala was a weekly show that initially played seven songs but then started ranking them. The show was India’s first countdown show and one of the most successful being played. People used to glue themselves to the radio because of the interactive way in which he aired the show. It felt as if everyone is having their own conversation with him.

I think the reason he became so popular and the show was so successful was because of his voice and his conversation skills. He made people not just hear the song but listen to it.

IELTS Cue Card Sample Questions # Old People

Old people are often those important elements of our society that do get neglected. These are the people we get to learn so much about life. This time we are looking at a cue card that talks about an old person you admire.

Talk about an old person you admire.
You should say:

  • who this person is
  • how long you have known him/her
  • what qualities he/she has.

And say why you admire him/her.

SAMPLE ANSWER 1

I have always been surrounded by lots of old people, sometimes my grandparents, the other times that of my friends. But, I think the one person that I admire the most is my maternal grandfather. I have seen many people in their late 70s or early 80s but never have I met someone as fit as my grandpa in that age. I remember him getting up early as  4 in the morning and you could find him on the fields by 5.

He would go on a walk and then go to the fields. Coming back home he would read newspaper and then teach us during the summer holidays. Not only this, he even helped in bringing the ration for house.

I think the fact that he did not summoned to his old age and did things that even sometimes we feel lazy about, make me admire him. Never did he pretended to be old or someone who needs help.

SAMPLE ANSWER 2

Out of all the old people that I have known, I think the one person who I admire the most is my maternal grandfather. Not only is he more fit than his counterparts, he often beats us the heat of sun. I love  the fact that he has a schedule. So, he would get up by 4 and go for walk and then hit the field. It was because of him that we got a chance of having great fruits and vegetables through out the year.

My grandfather even loved reading books. It was he who introduced me to the amazing world of books. He would often tell us the stories of how India fought independence and the tales of Rabindranath Tagore, Mahatma Gandhi and Indira Gandhi. We as kids would always surround him for knowledge about how the nature works and how life is.

The reason I admire him is because instead of sitting down waiting for things to happen for him, he actually made things happen for himself and taught some amazing things to us.
