IELTS Cue Card – Study Room

Most of us have a study room in our house. Well, there are some who have a completely different room for study, while there are some who have a corner of their house where they do study. This time we are looking at a cue card that talks about your study room.

Describe your study room.

You should say :

  • how it looks?
  • how much time do you spend there?
  • what according to you, an ideal study room should be?

also explain how would you like to change your study room?

SAMPLE ANSWER 1

Our house had a storeroom next to my bedroom, which I later changed to my study room. The room is a small room with a window facing the garden of our house. Opposite the window is where my study desk is kept, so I can always gaze outside when in stress. The room has a shelf where I keep my books and a smaller desk where I keep all the frequent things. Like, if I am reading a novel, it will be kept on the desk. But, if I had completed reading it, I would probably keep it back on my shelf.

The room is painted white in colour, except for the wall opposite my desk. We have painted it in a dark purple colour because of two reasons. One, it is my favourite colour. Second, it brings a sense of achievement, luxury and yet calmness in my life. Most of my time after the office is spent there! Either I would be reading a novel there or preparing my speeches. According to me, an ideal study room is the one where a person can study calmly. So, it should be far away from all the distractions like television. Also, I think having a window is very important because it gives a person the time to think when in stress. Even a mirror also helps. Because sometimes when you have to learn something or practise it, you need the help of a mirror.

I do love my room, but I would like to have a mirror in my room so that I can practise my speeches well.

SAMPLE ANSWER 2

Our house has two floors and my study room is in the ground floor which makes it isolated and so a better place to be in. The room is a big room with two parts to it, one where my study material is kept and the other where a bed is placed. So, in case I wish to sleep, I can doze off there. The room has a big window, opposite to which my study table is kept. The room has two cupboards where I have placed my books, and then there is a small shelf where I keep the frequent books.

To the right of my study table, there is a small table where my laptop is kept. So, whenever I feel like doing some work on my laptop, I sit on the mat and do my work. On the right of my study table, there is a big mirror where I practise my speeches and often read out novels loud. Well, for the past year, since I left my job, I have always been in my study room or out of the house itself. I think, to an extent, my study room is an ideal study room because it has the mixture of both openness and isolation. There is technology as well as room for old books. It has got a mirror and then a window, which is very essential.

If ever I were to change my study room, I would only change the colour of the room. Presently it is painted in plain colours of violet. I would love to have more vibrant colours like orange and red in the room.

WORD MEANING

IELTS Cue Card: RIVER OR LAKE IN YOUR COUNTRY

IELTS Cue Card: Talk about an important river or lake in your country

Talk about an important river or lake in your country
You should say:

  • Which water body is that?
  • How do you know about it?
  • Why does it impress you so much

Sample Answer

Water bodies like rivers are of paramount importance for the survival of humans and other living organisms on this planet. Although my country has vast rivers like the holy Ganges and the mighty Brahmaputra, I’d like to talk about the river Indus, which is one of the longest rivers in Asia. I witnessed the beauty of Indus on my visit to Leh last year. Originating in the Tibetan plateau, the river runs a course through the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. Then it flows through the entire length of Pakistan before draining into the Arabian Sea. Going back in history, the Indus, or Sindh, River had a significant role in the development of the Indus Valley civilisation. The remains of the ancient cities of Harappa and Mohenjodaro were found on the banks of this river. The Indus merges with the Zanskar River near a place called Nimoo, a few kilometres from Leh. The confluence point offers the most mesmerising view, which is a treat for the eyes. What is even more impressive is that this river is the lifeline of people living in this otherwise arid and barren high-altitude desert. The Indus remains frozen for almost a quarter of the year, and locals provide ice-skating facilities for the tourists. One of the locals told me that the blind Indus River dolphin is a sub-species of dolphin found only in the Indus River and is on the verge of extinction. Although Pakistan generates hydropower with the help of dams and barrages on Indus, there is none on the Indian side. In the end, I’d like to say that it’s our duty to conserve our precious water resources for the sustenance of life on the Earth and for the betterment of future generations.

Sample Answer

Food is one of our basic needs. Certainly, we need food to survive. Nevertheless, we need varieties of tasty cuisines to relish and feel satisfied. Food stimulates our brains and provides us satisfaction. Being raised in an Indian family, delicious food has always been my weakness. Food is the source of bringing family and friends together on different occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, etc. Great and long-lasting memories are created while having lunch or dinner together. Everyone is fond of some or the other type of food; it depends on the taste and ethnicity.

My birthday has recently passed. My younger sister had organised a small surprise party for me at our home. She invited all my close friends. Though my sister did not know how to cook, she learned and cooked a special recipe for the party. She cooked litti chokha for the guests. It is popular in the states of Bihar and Jharkhand.

Litti looks like a small ball made up of whole wheat flour, whereas chokha is prepared by mashing brinjal, potatoes and tomatoes together. Traditionally, littis were roasted over coal or cow-dung cakes, but now the same can be roasted in a microwave. The richness of the dish is increased when a dollop of ghee is poured over the litti balls. It is a main-course recipe. It has an authentic flavour of ginger, garlic and Indian spices. It is generally served with spicy pickles and green chutney.

We all liked the dish and appreciated my sister for the efforts she put in to learn and cook a traditional recipe. This dish is special to me, as it was prepared by my sister for the first time just to surprise me. I was really touched by her sweet gesture of love and care.

Nature and its biodiversity have given us so many beautiful plants and trees of different kinds. These bear beautiful flowers and delicious fruits and vegetables. I find all of this greenery around me to be very attractive, and I like it very much. One of these is the rose flower, which I like the most. It is a perennial flower that grows on a woody plant. Highly abundant, this flower is found all over the world. It has many varieties in different colours.

Its beauty and intricate design have led to its use as an ornamental plant. Apart from that, it has a sweet and pleasing scent and has various uses. People use it for decorations, in bouquets, and for making perfumes. Also used in the making of food, drinks, and medicine, it is a highly beneficial plant.

Actually, I first saw it as a child, when I went to a rose garden with different rose varieties blooming in one place. A highly intriguing sight, these flowers enchanted me with their charm and pleasant smell, and I was lost in this picturesque sight. As I grew older, I found that it is also considered a physical representation of love and used in art for many years. Hence, I have started liking the rose flower very much since then.
