IELTS CUE CARD # TALK ABOUT A TV SERIES YOU REMEMBER

Sample Answer

In this day and age, there are hundreds of TV channels broadcasting news, soap operas, reality shows, sports events, etc. There is something for the people of varied interests and choices. Here I would like to talk about an American fantasy drama series called “Game of Thrones”. I began watching it a few years back when one of our family friends recommended it to us. It’s an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin’s series of fantasy novels, the first of which is A Game of Thrones. It has an ensemble cast estimated to be the largest on television. The series premiered on HBO in 2011, and its seventh season ended in 2017. The concluding season, 8, will be broadcast next year. The story revolves around the iron throne of the seven kingdoms and follows a web of alliances and conflicts among the noble families fighting for the throne. Game of Thrones has attracted record viewership, including an active, broad international fanbase.
The series is filmed in one of the most magnificent and breathtakingly beautiful locations in the UK, Canada, Iceland, Morocco, Spain and the US. The costumes and sets take the viewers back in time and captivate them throughout the serial. The series exhibits the most extraordinary cinematography skills, animation and graphics, including the giants and dragons, which seem absolutely real. Even a few video games have come up inspired by the game of thrones. The only thing which I dislike is excessive violence in some of the serials.

FOLLOW-UP QUESTIONS
Q1. Do you think most people watch TV for education or for entertainment?
ANS. I personally feel that majority of viewers actually watch TV in their leisure time for entertaining themselves. Most of the channels on TV broadcast soaps, reality shows and sports events rather than education-based shows. However, there are some channels exclusively telecasting lectures and tutorials which can be accessed by paying some extra subscription amount.

Q2. Should TV play a role in educating children? How?
ANS. Yes, TV can definitely be used as a medium to educate children. Mass media, like television, can have a profound impact on young minds. If I talk about certain channels like Discovery Science and National Geographic, they have a whole range of knowledgeable shows not only for adults but for children also. When the young minds actually see what they have studied theoretically, they understand and remember the ideas in a much better way. Also, programmes on animals and the environment make them sensitive about their conservation, which is a must in today’s circumstances.

Q3. Do you think TV viewing habits change as people get older?
ANS. It’s undeniably true that as people age, their day-to-day routine and interests also change. The same is true as far as the choice of contents of programmes and the time when they want to watch TV are concerned. While toddlers watch cartoons, teenagers have a keen interest in music and sports. Then, in adulthood, the focus is towards news and politics. Similarly, the elderly like watching religion-based channels.

CUE CARD – Describe an unusual meal you had

Speaking – Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe an unusual meal you had.
You should say:

    • What it was?
    • When you had it?
    • Why was it unusual?
Sample Answer

I consider that one of the finest ways to learn about global traditions is to sample a variety of cuisines. I eat a lot; therefore, I enjoy trying new foods and introducing my tongue to new flavours. In addition to engaging in sports like scuba diving and rafting on my most recent trip to Goa, I learned about the region’s rich culture and the history of Portuguese culture. One restaurant in Goa is well known for its delectable food and excellent service. Prior to my visit, I had already made up my mind about what I was going to do, so I was eager to give it a try. I decided to try eating fish since I had never done it before. A nutrient-rich diet like seafood has a number of health advantages. Vitamins and minerals are abundant in fish. Sadly, the dish did not taste as good as it initially appeared to. I was absolutely ignorant of the fact that they contained various ingredients. Those who are not habitual to this may find these substances to be extremely peculiar. I ended up throwing up in the washroom; moreover, I may not give it a second chance in the future.

CUE CARD – Describe something that was broken in your home and then repaired

Speaking – Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe something that was broken in your home and then repaired.
You should say:

    • What it is ?
    • How it was broken ?
    • How you got it repaired ?
    • And how you felt about it ?

Sample Answer:

When I was young, I used to be incautious about my belongings. I would often forget or break things. My mother would scold me several times and label me as a clumsy daughter.

The thing I broke was the television. Being the age of hand-held gadgets, there are still enough people around who prefer television over mobile. No doubt, it feels terrifying when your beloved TV gets a cracked screen.
It was Sunday afternoon, and my brother and I were playing chess. After some time, we both got into an argument, and the argument soon turned into a fight. My brother started chasing me with the chessboard, and all of a sudden, he threw the board towards me. Luckily, it did not touch me, but unfortunately, it hit the television. We both were petrified and had lost the courage to look at the TV screen. Our mother rushed into the room after hearing the noise and scolded us very badly. She immediately informed our father, which made us even more scared. However, he did not utter a single word to either of us. But we could easily see the anger on his face. We knew something big was awaited.

A technician was called to fix the damage. Fortunately, it was fixed, but it cost us an arm and a leg. Our father did not interact with us for a week. It was disheartening to see our parents suffering due to our reckless behaviour.
We both apologised for the mishap and promised not to repeat any such incidents in the future.

Speaking – Part 3 (Follow-up questions)
Here are some examples of follow-up questions that the examiner may ask during your speaking (part 3) related to the cue card ‘describe something that was broken in your home and then repaired’.

Q1. Are IT-related jobs valued more by society?
Well, IT-related jobs have gained popularity in recent years. But, in my country, government jobs are more valued than any IT-related jobs because they provide a sense of security and act as a status symbol in society.

Q2. Is the quality of products worse than before?
Certainly, there is ample evidence to prove how companies have played with the quality of products. If we look back 50 years ago, the quality of products was much finer than today’s. Earlier, companies used to focus on the needs of the consumers; now their sole motive is to earn profit.

Q3. What kinds of things do people like to repair by themselves?
. Saving money is one of the factors people consider when tackling a home improvement project. People like to repair several things at home, for instance, fixing a leaky kitchen or bathroom pipe, fixing a sticking window, and many more.

Q4. Why do people like to get their mobile phones repaired in specialised stores?
Quality is the major reason why people opt for specialised stores, as they offer better and more reliable service than any local store. Apart from that, specialised stores deliver one-time fixes as well as a warranty for their device.

  • Who did you play it with?

Sample Answer

We have all played some game or the other during our childhood. The state of worry-free bliss and the passion that children have for their lives bring pure joy to everyone’s hearts. Some children play indoor games such as chess or carom, while some children prefer outdoor games such as cricket or basketball.

I also used to play a lot of indoor and outdoor games with my friends when I was younger. I especially played a lot of basketball, and it was my favourite game. Basketball is a great game and has helped me in maintaining my health through full-body exercise. We had a basketball court in our society, and all of the other children used to form two teams and play basketball for almost two hours every day. We used to have small competitions as well. Even in the games class in school, I spent most of my time playing basketball with my classmates. With time, I became better in the game, and my teacher and my parents supported me enough to become the school team captain.

I enjoyed myself playing and representing my school and our team in other local championships and sports meets. This game has taught me a lot, such as leadership qualities, hand-eye coordination, team spirit, and most importantly, the value of physical fitness. I still remember those times and go to a court nearby to play basketball sometimes.
