IELTS Speaking 2017 Questions # May 27

Questions asked in the speaking section change faster than probably seasons. The questions asked in 2016 are probably not the questions that will be asked in 2017. This time we bring to you some of the speaking questions that have been asked in the speaking section on May 25.

Q: Do you live in a house or a flat?

I live in a house facing north with two other families living in the first and second floor respectively. My rooms are on the ground floor along with the land lord’s room. The part of our house has two rooms along with a kitchen and an attached bathroom. It has been three months since we started living in here. Before this, we were living in shared accommodation. I like my study room because it’s small and there is less management required. I can very easily locate my books and study.

Q: What kind of house would you like to live in the future?

The view is the most important thing for me. When it comes to my house, I would like to live in a house with a lot of windows which allows enjoying the view outside. Outside of my apartment, it would be lovely if we have a beach or a view of the mountain. Probably, it would be so much better to be surrounded by nature all around us. I wish for a big house but the one that is expanded horizontally. It will be nice to have a few gardens at my house with a lot of plants and trees. I am sure such a facility might not be available in the middle of the city, but it would be nice if the house is not too far from the main city.

Q: What kind of jewelry you have?

I don’t own many golds or diamond jewelry. Probably, I don’t like putting on much of them. But I do love accessorizing my clothes with artificial jewelry. I have a dozen earrings. All that I have collected over a period of time. I do even own some hand wrist but not much of them either.

Q: Have you ever bought jewelry for someone else?

My mother is very fond of gold jewelry. She always had a desire for buying long earrings. However, because of certain reasons she never got a chance of buying them. It was during my college years and I got a stint at a writing company. Working for this company, was an amazing experience for me altogether. It was the first time that I got a salary and I recollect my mother shopping earring for my aunt. She wanted to gift an earring for her on her anniversary. So, buying we both got confused on two earrings. My mother loved both and so I gifted her the one she loved more. I could truly see a feeling of pride in her eyes and more importantly happiness. That gift surely made my day.

General Training Writing task 1: Complaint Letter Noisy Restaurant

IELTS Writing Task 1: Complaint Letter

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

A restaurant near your home is making a lot of noise. You called the manager but no action was taken.

Write a letter to the manager. In your letter

  • introduce yourself
  • describe the problems you are facing because of this
  • suggest solutions

Write at least 150 words.

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir/Madam,

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am a resident at the MG Road, and the president of the residential association for the people living in and around the MG Road. My house is right next to your restaurant.

I am writing to bring it into your notice that we hear a lot of noise coming out from your restaurant. Loud music being played in the pub and people getting rowdy and creating ruckus after drinking is a common site these days at your restaurant. And it gets really loud, when it’s expected to be quieter.

To be honest, I am a bit disappointed. Before writing to you, twice I had a word with the manager of your restaurant. He told me that he will look into it for me but nothing happened. He turned a deaf ear, and I feel that was a bit rude of him to do so.

I would like to request you here to curb the sound post 2300 hours and maybe install sound proof glasses wherever necessary. As you know it’s against the law to play loud music between 22:00 and 07:00.

As well, would really appreciate if you could ask your clients to keep their voices to themselves, as they tend to get too loud after downing few pints and hire a few bouncers to keep the brawlers at bay. If everyone liked the same sounds, noise would not be a problem. What’s music to your ears, your neighbors might dislike.

Looking forward to a positive response and a speedy resolution of my concern. Thanking you, in anticipation.

Warm Regards

Dalpreet Kaur

books IELTS Band7

Sample Answer:

I prefer reading in my leisure time. Today, I would like to speak about a book hat was recommended to me. I found it quite insightful and would love to read it again, whenver time allows me to do so.

The name of the book is Onward. It is written by Howard Schultz, the CEO of Starbucks, America’s leading coffee company and coffee house chain. This book falls under the genre of Business and Leadership.

In the Year 2010, I was working for Cocoberry, India’s first frozen yogurt brand. That’s when I came across the book as my company’s CEO gifted it to all employees and suggested us to read it. In this book, Howard shares the remarkable story of his return and the company’s ongoing transformation under his leadership. He reveals how during one of the most tumultuous economic times in history, Starbucks again achieved profitability and sustainability.

It’s been 2 years since I read this book. I’d like to go through it again. The main reason behind this is the beautiful manner in which the book is written. It keeps you motivated and tells you how not to lose hope in tough times. It includes information about the time when Howard comes to terms with his limitations and how he evolves his leadership style during that time. It represents his central leadership philosophy: It’s not just about winning, but the right way to win. It gives the readers a sense of hope that no matter how tough times get, the future can be just as or more successful than the past.

Q.

How does the literature help you understand the culture of a particular place?
Ans: Books have been the source of knowledge from the ancient times and they have acted as a medium of passing information. They have known to be an authentic source of information be it related to culture, science, medicine, history etc. culture has known to evolve overtime, being passed on generation to generation. And the best way to understand about the culture of a new place is to read about it through the books.

Talking or listening to someone might help you to an extent in understanding about the culture, but that will be a version of his or her understanding or of someone who he/she might have heard from. Thus, the authenticity could never be really gauged and relied upon. Ergo, the need of writing literature, in the ancient times. It was the prime responsibility of the historians to write the literature in such a manner that it could be referred to and easily understood by the masses as and when required, by the common masses and by those who were yet to come.

Q.

Why is it important for parents and adults to read books to their children?
Answer: A child’s mind is a clean slate, and it is up to the parents and adults what to fill it up with. Books are the vast source of knowledge and educating your kids with them is the best way to nourish their mind and help it grow. Reading books to your kids helps in enhancing their knowledge, creativity/ imagination, listening skill as well it helps in bonding the family as a whole.

IELTS Cue Card Latest Questions # Interesting Neighbours

We are living in times when people are so busy living their lives that they don’t even remember who their neighbours are! However, there are some who manage to have really nice neighbours. This time we are looking at a cue card that talks about an interesting neighbour.

Describe an interesting neighbour.
You should say:

  • who is the person?
  • how often you see him or her
  • how long you have known this neighbour

also explain, why you consider this person to be interesting.

Notes :

  • boy studying in college
  • mostly in weekends
  • probably one year
  • he does almost everything, right from cooking food to cleaning his room.
  • he is an amazing traveller
  • has a lot of knowledge.
Sample Answer:

It was a year back when I shifted to Bhubaneswar and started living in an apartment. Initially, no one lived in my neighbourhood until one day when a stout boy came there with just a bag. For few days, I thought there would be something more that he will bring along with him, but there was absolutely nothing. Just a few books, probably his documents and there was he. Later I realised he was a student at a nearby college and was doing his bachelor’s there.

We met over a confusion of a Mc Donald’s delivery boy and landed up eating the pizza together.  I remember us talking about space and then novels and games and had lots of fun! Then he told me about how great cook he is and we meet up almost every weekend!

Sometimes we go travelling, the other times to a book fair. The reason I find this person so interesting is that he is so intelligent yet so warm and then so freaky all at once.  You can never get hang of what is going on in his mind.

WORD MEANING

neighbourhood

a district or community within a town or city.

stout

rather fat or of heavy build.
