IELTS Cue Card – Childhood Skill

We all are the ultimate result of the skills that we learn. There are people who can paint well and, for that matter, some who can play games or write. And it takes the time to build those skills. Skills even as simple as typing can help people go a long way. This time let us have a look at a recent question asked in the IELTS Speaking section.

Tell us about a skill that you have learned in your childhood.
  • What is that skill?
  • How has it helped you in your life?
  • Did your teachers, parents played an important role in nurturing the skill?
Also explain, if you think learning can be done best when someone gives their heart into it or they are forced to do it?

SAMPLE ANSWER

The one thing that has really helped me in my life is my control of keys on the keyboard. I learnt to type when computers had yet not gained much momentum, and we really did not know that it would be of so much use in the near future. However, I really am thankful to my father, who helped me work on it. So, when other children were busy learning by writing things in their notebooks, I used to make my notes on the computer and get them printed.

The entire thing came back to me only when I took up a job as a blogger. When one is writing something, it is good to have the entire focus on what needs to be written rather than how it finally gets entered. My typing speed has not only helped me write better articles but also type them fast, giving room for more assignments and so more money.

Even more, being a coder, it is nice to have control of the keyboard. After all, it is a way by which you can actually interact with the CPU and get things done. Better control means things are done faster and there is less frustration over petty matters.

I believe children need to be exposed to all the new possibilities around them and then let them decide what they actually want. Even if they are indecisive, they should be allowed to try their hand at more than one thing. With time, they as well as teachers and parents will know the one thing the child will be best at.

CUE CARD – Describe a place you visited where the air was polluted

Speaking – Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe a place you visited where the air was polluted.

You should say:

    • Where the place is?
    • When you visited?
    • Why the air was not good?
    • And say how you felt about the place?
Sample Answer 1

Air pollution is now considered to be the world’s largest environmental health threat. It is hard to escape, no matter how prosperous an area you live in. It is all around us. As day by day the increase in population, the number of motor vehicles also increased, and motor vehicles cause high emissions, thereby causing pollution. I can mark this as one of the strongest reasons for creating pollution after my current visit to a place where the air was highly contaminated.

My family planned to meet our extended family which lives in Delhi. We were extremely excited to meet them and equally excited to explore Delhi. The moment we arrived at Delhi airport, we witnessed a change in the air quality. Everywhere it was black smoke, and I could feel polluted particles in my breathing. Despite the poor air quality, I tried to make the most of my trip and explore some of the famous places in Delhi. We visited the Red Fort, which is one of the most visited places in Delhi and holds historical importance, but again, the pollution made it challenging, as I could barely see the intricate details on the walls due to the smog. Even though I had a mask throughout the time, it did not help me much. I was constantly thinking about how hard it must be for people to live here for a longer period of time.

Overall, I was completely dissatisfied with the trip. It made me appreciate the importance of environmental conservation and taking steps to reduce pollution levels for a better future.

STRONG WORDS
Word Meaning Sentence
Appreciate to value I appreciate your efforts.
Dissatisfied to be unhappy I am dissatisfied by your results.
Prosperous which brings wealth and success Diwali is a prosperous festival.

Speaking – Part 3 (Follow-up questions)
Here are some examples of follow-up questions that examiner may ask during your speaking (part 3) related to cue card ‘Describe a place you visited where the air was polluted.’

Q1. Is there more pollution than in the past?

Yes, indeed, with the increase in population, the number of motor vehicles also increased, and motor vehicles cause high emissions, thereby causing pollution.

Q2. In what ways can air pollution be reduced effectively?

Well, there are several ways by which we can control it, starting by conserving energy – at home, at work, everywhere – and also by using environmentally safe paints and cleaning products whenever possible.

Q3. Do you think the city is cleaner or dirtier than the countryside?

Well, undoubtedly the countryside is cleaner than the urban areas. As it is less crowded, more population results in more pollution. Industries, coal power plants, etc. are major causes of air pollution, which is found more in cities.

Sample Answer 2

Well, with the advent of urbanisation it is quite obvious that the world has become a really compact space, and pollution adds on to it. Today, I would like to elaborate on one such place where the air was extremely polluted: the place is Delhi.

I went to Delhi last year, and I had a three-day stay there due to some work. I could clearly make out the difference in the air, for it was really polluted, and thus, the visibility was highly reduced. In addition to this, there was this never-ending queue of vehicles lined up one after the other, consistently honking at each other. Somehow, we managed to reach the hotel where our reservations for the stay were done. I was so tired that I directly went to sleep.

One of the main reasons why I feel the air was polluted was the high release of harmful pollutants in the air, which is not only detrimental to the environment but also to the living beings. I could actually understand now why people who live in metropolitan cities suffer from breathing problems, which is again due to pollution. I personally felt claustrophobic even though I was outdoors, as the air was so suffocating.

STRONG WORDS
Word Meaning Sentence
Detrimental harmful Smoking is detrimental to health.
Verdant full of greenery Dehradun is a verdant city.
Carcinogen cancer-causing substance Tobacco is carcinogenic.

Speaking – Part 3 (Follow-up questions)
Here are some examples of follow-up questions that examiner may ask during your speaking (part 3) related to cue card ‘Describe a place you visited where the air was polluted.’

Q1. Is there more pollution than in the past?

Definitely yes, as the number of high-rise apartments and vehicles has increased. So, there is more release of pollutants into the air. Also, people are very callous about using their vehicles; they do not get their cars and bikes checked on a regular basis, leading to the emission of carcinogens into the air, whereas this was not the case previously. As cities were less developed and more verdant.

Q2. Do you think wind has any effect on pollution?

Well, I for sure think that wind contributes to the rising pollution as the suspended dust particles flow along with the wind, which may result in reduced visibility and detrimental effects on the eyes.

IELTS Cue Card – Environment Condition

The environment has changed in the last few decades. As man has improved upon the technology, there has been a considerable decline in the environment, with some of the technologies causing more harm than ever. The ozone layer has depleted, and there are clear signs of other harmful effects found in humans and animals. Today, through the cue card questions, we shall be looking at a harmful environmental problem.

Describe a harmful environmental problem.

You should say:

  • What is it
  • How it is harmful
  • What harmful effects it creates

and explain what can be done to prevent this environmental problem.

enviroment problems

A healthy environment is the most important thing for being alive. However, with changing times and improving technologies and declining man-made activities, there has been a considerable effect on the environment, causing a lot of problems. I believe the one problem that we all are facing and will surely decline more is the reducing ozone layer effect.

The ozone layer is the most important layer for us, as it helps protect us from the harmful effects of UV rays, but with the holes in the ozone layer, it has been seen that the temperature of Earth is rising and then there are glaciers melting. Even more, since now the UV rays directly hit the humans, there are more chances of getting skin cancer and cataracts. Even more, some animals are losing their fertility because of ozone layer depletion.

In addition, it causes immune system depletion in human beings, making them susceptible to all possible diseases. There has been a seen effect on the plants, with some plants not being able to grow well, as there has been a decline in the photosynthesis and flowering. Ozone layer depletion has also caused loss of biodiversity in our oceans; rivers and lakes could reduce fish yields for commercial and sport fisheries.

There are several effects of ozone layer depletion, and the scientists are working towards improving the condition of ozone. It can be done if we start planting more trees and stop using the vehicles at such an alarming rate. Even more, a shift towards industries that shed less smoke needs to be promoted.

Our environment is on the decline, and there are several issues that have affected the lifestyle of human beings. One of them is the increased noise pollution. With the coming of railways, jets and vehicles, one can see that there is more honking and unnecessary noise being created.

Noise pollution can be caused by vehicles that honk for no reason, by aeroplanes and rails and often when a rocket is launched. It doesn’t seem to harm at the first point, so if there is someone honking, one won’t die, but when it happens on an everyday basis, so if every day a person is hearing only honks or other undesirable noises, he or she becomes more irritable. Even more, the kids who have very sensitive ears are likely to be affected very badly. In some cases, when the music was very loud, there have been cases of children going deaf.

Noise pollution is very harmful for the old people because, like children, they also have sensitive ears. It has been observed that it not only affects the ears but in some cases even causes heart attacks or nervous system failure.

Apart from humans, noise pollution affects the birds and the other animals, causing a shift in their behaviour. Many marine animals, especially whales, use hearing to find food, communicate, defend and survive in the ocean. Excessive noises are causing a lot of injuries and deaths to whales.

These effects may not sound troubling, but the truth is, with time, the consequences can be very worrying. There are different ways by which we can surely reduce noise pollution. One of them is switching off the devices when not in use. So, the fan should be switched off or the computer, because when not in use, it makes certain noises. Even more, construction of soundproof rooms for noisy machines in industrial and manufacturing installations must be encouraged. Also, vegetation along roads and in residential areas is a good way to reduce noise pollution, as it absorbs sound.

I believe we need to start working before it is too late.

SAMPLE ANSWER 1

I remember buying my first laptop after months of saving. At that time, there were two kinds of jobs that I was doing; one was as a freelance writer and the other was as a software engineer. Although I could have bought a 30000 laptop from the earnings of a month, when the day came closer of actually buying the laptop, I, for a second, thought about it again and, for some reason, decided not to buy a normal personal computer and decided to buy a Macintosh.

There was no definite reason for buying it. It is just that while I was about to buy my first laptop, something just came back to me. Some years ago, while having a conversation with my uncle, I told him that it is a laptop which is very important for me. I would buy myself a Macintosh as the first laptop.

The Macintosh that I fell in love with was the MacBook Air. You could just go on doing your work in it forever. And then there is so much attachment to the machine because of its founder, Steve Jobs. I mean, every time you work on a Macintosh, it feels like you are doing great work and you are being unique.

I remember having saved for three months before I could buy a Macintosh, and it took me many sleepless nights before it was mine, and trust me, the day it was mine, it was amazing, beautiful. Its features were so amazing that it has been six years since I first bought my first Macintosh, and it is still running fine.

The reason that I bought it was that I wanted to know Apple better, and it is when you use a device of a certain company that you are able to know the company and its ethics better.

SAMPLE ANSWER 2

I am a blogger, and there was a time when I wanted to open my own travel blog. For me to be able to open and run an efficient blog, I required a camera. Having thought a lot about it and talking to many people, I decided on buying a DSLR. But DSLRs are expensive, and the one that I thought was fit for my job cost me around 50000.

During that time, I remember earning 35000 monthly, and after having covered my expenses, I was left with almost 15000 per month. It took me around 3 months before I could buy my first DSLR.

It is because of it that today I am able to click great photographs and also shoot videos. At that time, I felt as if I were spending money, but looking back at it, I can surely say that I had made an investment. My blog is now running really well, and it is great to be able to make something new every day.
