Differences b/w IELTS and TOEFL
Major Differences between the IELTS and TOEFL
Reading
TOEFL – You will have 3 – 5 reading selections of twenty minutes each. Reading materials are academic in nature. Questions are multiple choice.
IELTS – 3 reading selections of twenty minutes each. Materials are, as in the case of the TOEFL, related to an academic setting. There are multiple type questions (gap fill, matching, etc.)
Listening
TOEFL – The listening selection very different from the IELTS. In the TOEFL, you will have 40 – 60 minutes worth of listening selections from lectures or campus conversations. Take notes and respond to multiple choice questions.
IELTS – The largest difference between the two exams is in listening. In the IELTS exam there are a wider variety of question types, as well as exercises of differing lengths. You will answer questions as you move through the listening selection of the test.
Writing
TOEFL – Two written tasks are required on the TOEFL and all writing is done on the computer. Task one involves writing a five paragraph essay of 300 to 350 words. Note taking is important as the second task asks you to take notes from a reading selection in a text book and then a lecture on the same topic. You are then asked to respond using notes by writing a 150 – 225 word selection integrating both the reading and listening selection.
IELTS – The IELTS also has two tasks: the first a short essay of 200 – 250 words. The second IELTS writing task asks you to look at an infograhic such as a graph or chart and summarize the information presented.
Speaking
TOEFL – Once again the speaking section differs greatly between the TOEFL and the IELTS exams. On the TOEFL you are asked to record responses on the computer of 45 – 60 seconds to six different questions based on short descriptions / conversations. The speaking section of the test lasts 20 minutes.
IELTS – The IELTS speaking section lasts from 12 to 14 minutes and takes place with an examiner, rather than a computer as on the TOEFL. There is a short warm up exercise consisting mainly of small talk, followed by a response to some sort of visual stimulus and, finally, a more extended discussion on a related topic

Sample Answer
In the past few years, modern technology has become accessible to society at large. More and more parents are relying on computers and laptops to make their children learn new things. In this essay, I will discuss both merits and demerits of using technology for learning.
Let’s begin by looking at the advantages of using tablets and smartphones. The main positive is that it supports social interaction and enhances communication skills. In other words, children can easily connect with their family and friends. Moreover, due to their advanced features, compact devices like mobile phones have become more than just a calling device. They can be used for entertainment and learning as well. Children get the chance to learn through various educational applications. Furthermore, playing games on smartphones, increases their mental stimulation and concentration.
Turning to the other side of the argument, excessive use of electronic devices makes children devoid of physical activity. It not only hampers their personal growth but also physical development. Another issue is that, children prefer isolation and become addicted to these devices. As a result, it adversely affects their interpersonal as well as social skills.
Considering both the sides, we can conclude that balance is the key. Although, smartphones and tablets have multiple benefits, reading and other physical exercises are also necessary for children’s overall development. I believe, the educational benefits of using electronic devices outweigh any drawbacks.

IELTS Speaking Sample Answer # Communication
When two people exchange their ideas, share their opinions and discuss things, it is then they communicate.
How is communication changing between people?
Communication has definitely changed in the past few decades. From communicating through pigeon dropping letters we are now able to see each other while talking. Earlier people went on to meet others personally, but with advancement in technology people are now comfortable sitting in their room and interacting through smart phones. Instead of those long letters now see the cut and short messages.
It used to be common to talk to strangers. Do you think it’s okay to talk to people you don’t know?
I think it is fine only with an intention of knowing the other person or may be just passing time. Because no matter how great friends we have, they also were strangers at some point of time. But, if one starts interacting with complete strangers, whom we never meet of have no connection in common, sometimes it turns out in a very negative way, especially if one is traveling alone.
How often do you start up a conversation with people you don’t know?
I do it rarely, especially when I am in a journey and I see my comrades. I remember, there was a journey that I took and I met people from my company and we didn’t knew each other. So, we talked off and got to know about the company and stuff. The other time I was taking a journey to Puri during the path yatra and met so many people during my journey. Some told me about the temple’s history, others shared their passion for touching the rope of the chariot.
Think about how your Grandmother talks with people. Is it the same as how you talk to people?
My grandmother is very sincere when she talks to people. I have seen her speaking her heart out, being hones with what she feels about the other person. Rarely, does she speaks with those she is not interested in. Too an extent I think I am like her only, because I also speak to the ones I like to.
How do you think will people communicate in the future?
I think it will be all technology for communicating. Most probably, people will communicate using their minds. Technologies where people will be able to send their thoughts off to the other person will be available. It might even be possible that people are able to feel the other person virtually and interact with them.
How have smart phones changed communication?
Smart phones have taken talking as the form of communication to messaging as the foremost method we use to communicate. Earlier people interacted using a call, now we have whatsapp, social media and so much at our tip. There was wait in earlier times, the curiosity for the letter about to come, and then the fun in reading it and writing back. Now, it is very instant. The moment, I feel like talking with someone, I can interact in jus seconds, get a reply and move on. Although, it has made conversations easier but I think it has taken away the fun of waiting and reading about the other person life.
Name at least 10 forms of communication.
Communication can take place in any way. Some of the most common methods of communication are –
- twoo
- messaging
- google +
- voip
- video calling
- letters
Do you think people can communicate with ghosts and spirits?
I am not very sure of it. But, I think if people claim to be able to talk to ghost and spirits we should definitely look into this matter. Because, if it is possible this means that ghost and spirits do exist and it does brings into forefront a very big question for science as science fails to explains the presence of them.
What is the most basic form of communication?
No matter how much advancement in technology happens, I think still the most basic form of communication remains to be our mouth. It is with talking that we are able to communicate and make some lasting friendships and relations. Apart from that, however, social media is surely emerging as a basic form of communicating with people.

Pen Or Pencil ?
Giving IELTS is the most important thing if you are interested in studying or living abroad. The more marks you score, the better are your chances of getting scholarship. Now, IELTS provides you with the option of writing with pen or pencil and it often comes to confusion to students as to what should be done.
Pen Or Pencil?
It is preferred that while writing the listening or the reading section, you use pencil and make sure you carry your eraser with you. This is because these two sections consist of the multiple choice questions. There might be chances that you mistakenly mark the wrong answer and when choosing the correct, if you use a pen, it will make your answer sheet dirty.
With writing section, it is your choice as to what you want to do. Some people write better with pen while others with pencil. So, it all depends on what you are comfortable with.
Tips For Pens And Pencils
- When writing with pen there is no option of deleting, as it will leave your answer sheet messy, something you surely would like to avoid.
- When writing with pen, if you make any mistake, make sure you cross it with more than one line. The examiner should be able to clearly see that the word has been cut off.
- Prefer using a smoothly running pen. Also, make sure that there is enough ink in it. Using different pens, might make your answer sheet look untidy.
