Letter writing is often regarded as one of the toughest thing to score marks in. You never realise what are the points you have missed and what are the ones you over wrote. Given below is a guide to the letter writing that will surely help you in understanding how to write effective letters.


You are organizing a trip to the Taj Mahal for a group of students from Perth in western Australia. Write to the manager of a nearby student hostel services and explain when you are you planning to visit the Taj Mahal, how long will your visit will be, how many students are there in your group and what will be your accommodation requirement.

HOW SHOULD YOU ANSWER THIS QUESTION ?

The letter writing questions asked in IELTS are usually of this form. You will be given a situation and some other related details that must be covered by you in the answer. Remember, you love purposeful answer all the details asked in the question. Leaving any one would result in loss of marks.

Now as is stated, you are writing this letter to the manager of the student services. So, how will you begin this letter. You must write-

Dear manager or you may also write Dear manager of student hostel services.

1. When do you want to visit the Taj Mahal ?

Answer this question in your letter. Give a time or times you will be visiting the place.

2.  How long will you stay?

Make sure you give a specific time you will be visiting for. It could be either a week or a month for for few days.

3. How many people are in your group ?

You lose writing to the manager asking for accommodation. It becomes very important for you to mention the number of people who will be staying or coming along with you. It could either be five or ten or fifty. Make sure you give the specific number.

4. What are your requirements ?

Imagine you are at Taj Mahal right now and imagine all what you require. It could be a guide, a list we other places you can visit near Taj Mahal, a cab, or any thing. In a letter this is the question you need to use your imagination.

HOW TO END THE LETTER ?

Just like any other conclusion write in a sentence what exactly you want from the manager side and finish the letter with yours sincerely or faithfully.
