SAMPLE ANSWER

Dear Avi,

Thank you for the beautiful memories that we made last summer in Goa, and those lovely photos that you sent me. I am sorry, I could not reply you earlier. The day I received your letter, I was about to leave for a one month travel to three cities. I have just returned to Sydney few days back.

Looking at the photos brings back so many memories of the times we spent together. It was  a complete fun enjoying holidays with you and our gang. Trust me I felt as if I am back to college. Those late night chats, dance, visiting unknown places, doing those pranks; I can’t thank you enough for those beautiful memories.

I am in Sydney right now, and there is carnival next month. It is one of the most beautiful and exciting event the city holds. And it would be real fun if you along with Anish, Abhilasha and Nemyer could come. The carnival has dance, music, games and so much that you would remember your entire life.

I would be thrilled if you could make it.

Thank you both again for the beautiful holiday and the photos which are already up on my wall. Now, I’m looking forward to hearing from you.

With love,

Anmol.

Issues With Neighbor

You should spend 20 minutes on this task.

You have been living in a rental apartment for the past few years. Recently a new neighbor moved in and has been making a lot of noise, which disturbs you.

Write a letter to the landlord. In your letter:

  • explain the situation
  • describe why it bothers you
  • suggest a solution

Write at least 150 words.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Dear Mrs. Rathore,

I hope you and your family are well. I am writing this letter in regards to the problem I am facing with the new tenant that has moved in the apartment next to mine. I have been living here since past two years and it has always been great living here, until now.

Few months ago, a person named Jack, moved in to live next door. Although it had been fine in the beginning with little issues, things have worsen in recent times. The issue is that Jack is a professional model and I understand that partying is a part of his profession. But with time the number of parties have increased. The problem is that he parties in night which are accompanied with loud music.

Being in the business of entertainment, the problem does not irritates me much but my children are school going. The loud music tends to disturb their sleep often leading to poor performance in school. Talking to jack has been to no avail and there was no option left.

I would appreciate it if you could speak to Jack and ask him to lower the volume of music.

I will let you know as soon as the situation improves.

Yours faithfully,

Anmol

SAMPLE ANSWER

Dear Ma’am,

I am sorry I have not written for so long. My work keeps me so busy, that I never have a minute to myself. I hope this letter finds you in good health. I hope that everything is great in school and the students still love the fantastic way you  used to teach. I have written to share with you a great news, I have got job in BBC.

You must be knowing how much it is important for me and for how long I have been waiting for this opportunity. It was only three days ago that I have got a job offer letter from BBC and they have provided a list of the required documents. One of them is a reference from a teacher.

The job requires  me to travel all over the world and interact with people and know about their culture. The content will then be uploaded on the official site of BBC along with the videos of my visit. This job is a dream come true for me.

Ma’am, I would be requiring a letter of recommendation along with a document showing the work I have done at school. I would be very thankful to you if you could send me the required documents immediately.

With love,

Anmol.

Story Behind Words

Words in English are not just random letters joined together and given names. Most of the words have a long history associated with them, and the story tells a lot about the word and its meaning. Let us have a look at some of the words and their stories.

ASSASIN
During the time of crusades the member of a certain Muslim sect engaged people to terrorize their Christian enemies by performing murders as a religious duty. These acts were carried out under the influence of hashish and the killers came to be known as Hashshashin. Hashshashin evolved to become assassin.
NEWS
Most of the people think that news is the acronym for north, east, west and south. So, for all of them, it is not the acronym of north, east, west and south. Rather, no words before the 20th century were acronyms. Rather, acronyms are part of the 20th century. So then what does news stands for? Well, news comes from the English word new, meaning something that has not existed before.
IVY LEAGUE
Ivy league colleges are dream colleges for many. But do you know what they mean? Well, Ivy League is originally a sportswriter’s term and was used in reference to the unofficial conference of teams also know as the old ten. The teams were army, brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, navy, Pennsylvania, Princeton and Yale. In 1940, army and navy dropped out of the association and the membership has remained the same ever since. The name derives from ivy that supposedly climbs the walls at these venerable institutions.
