Story Behind Words

Words in English are not just random letters joined together and given names. Most of the words have a long history associated with them, and the story tells a lot about the word and its meaning. Let us have a look at some of the words and their stories.

ASSASIN
During the time of crusades the member of a certain Muslim sect engaged people to terrorize their Christian enemies by performing murders as a religious duty. These acts were carried out under the influence of hashish and the killers came to be known as Hashshashin. Hashshashin evolved to become assassin.
NEWS
Most of the people think that news is the acronym for north, east, west and south. So, for all of them, it is not the acronym of north, east, west and south. Rather, no words before the 20th century were acronyms. Rather, acronyms are part of the 20th century. So then what does news stands for? Well, news comes from the English word new, meaning something that has not existed before.
IVY LEAGUE
Ivy league colleges are dream colleges for many. But do you know what they mean? Well, Ivy League is originally a sportswriter’s term and was used in reference to the unofficial conference of teams also know as the old ten. The teams were army, brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, navy, Pennsylvania, Princeton and Yale. In 1940, army and navy dropped out of the association and the membership has remained the same ever since. The name derives from ivy that supposedly climbs the walls at these venerable institutions.

Meanwhile, warming of the oceans is causing water to thermally expand fueling  sea level rises caused by melting land ice. Research released in the US on Monday found that Antarctic ice is melting so fast that the whole continent could be at risk by 2100, with severe consequences for coastal communities.

Problems in the ocean’s food chains will be a direct concern for hundreds of millions of people who rely upon seafood for sustenance , medicines and income. The loss of coral reefs could also worsen coastal erosion (the process by which the surface of the earth is worn away by the action of water, glaciers, winds, waves, etc)due to their role in protecting shorelines from storms and cyclones.

“These effects are happening now and will only be exacerbated in the next 50 to 100 years,” Nagelkerken said. “We are already seeing strange things such as the invasion of tropical species into temperate waters off south-eastern Australia. But if we reduce additional stressors such as overfishing and pollution, we can give species a better chance to adapt to climate change.”

exacerbated – to increase the severity, bitterness, or violence of (disease, ill ,etc.)

invasion – an act or instance of invading or entering as an enemy, especially byan army

stressors – an activity, event, or other stimulus that causes stress.

When You Forgot # Cue Card Tips

Part 2 of the speaking section consist of the cue card in which you are given a topic and you need to talk about it for 4-5 minutes. Let us have a look at a possible cue card.

Describe an occasion when you forgot to do something important. Please say
– What was it?
– When and where did it happen?
– How did you feel after that?

SAMPLE ANSWER

Well, I usually do remember things as I have got a good memory but sometimes I tend to forget even important things if my life is already disturbed. I remember an incident when I forgot a very important work. It was during the time of placements in college and we all were very nervous and preparing for it. There were placement classes going on and other things were at high priority list. It was during this time, I forgot to pay my semester fee and after three days I was called by my class coordinator that I haven’t yet paid my fees. I was so stunned because there is a fine of Rs. 500 per day for late fee and three days meant Rs. 1500 which was a huge amount for me. I thanked my teacher and immediately went to the bank to pay the fee and also the fine.
On reaching home I felt really heavy but then also realized that this is what pressure handling is all about. You need to do things and yet make sure that you are still balanced and not missing out on other important things.

Requirement Of Accomodation

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.

You are going on a short training course at Merybound college in Greenmount, Northern Ireland. You need somewhere to live while you are there.
Write a letter to the accommodation officer at the college for requirement of accomodation. In your letter:
-explain your situation.
-describe the accommodation you require.
-say when you will need it.

Write at least 150 words.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Dear Madam,

I am writing this letter to bring to your notice the requirement of accommodation during the training course at Merybound college. The training will begin in January 2016, under the guidance of Mr. Rathore.

Two months ago, I applied for a course on Biometrics in the college of Merybound, Germany and was one of the students who got selected for the six months’ training. Two weeks later, a mail was sent describing the formalities of joining the course. While applying I thought, accommodation will be provided for first few days after which we need to make arrangements. However, the information has just reached me that we are responsible for ourselves right from the very first day.

Although, arrangements have been made by me for 7 days after the joining date, I would be in trouble for the first few days. If you could provide accommodation for the first six days in Germany, it will be great help from your side.
