IELTS Essay musicians, sports stars and artists are born OR made

Sample Answer

What makes great artists, musicians, writers, or athletes: Nature or Nurture? This question has intrigued philosophers and scientists for centuries. I personally think that factors like family and environment play a decisive role in one’s life and successful career. Nevertheless, some natural talent is required to excel in areas such as sport, art or music.

Let us first look at how an innate ability in art or music or sport can make a difference. Certainly, it differentiates a person who has learned to play a sport or an instrument from someone who has mastered that skill. In other words, natural talent wins over a learned technique. It allows gifted people to reach a level which their hard-working counterparts can never manage. Also, learning that extra element is almost impossible, no matter how hard someone practices or how good the teachers are.

However, natural talent is an internal factor that can contribute to someone’s success. There are numerous external factors such as family, environment, experiences and training etc. which have their own significance. Good musicians, exceptional sports starts or other successful people are not made in one day. Years of hard work, family support, training and devotion make them what they are. Composer Beethoven and tennis legend Roger Federer are the telling examples.

To sum up, nature and nurture are inseparable. Inherited talents can affect our ability to reach the top level in certain professions. However, people can acquire skills and achieve their goals if they live in a conducive environment.

IELTS Graph deaths by gender in Australia

IELTS Graph deaths by gender in Australia

ANSWER:

The bar graph compares the proportion of males and females who died from various diseases in Australia in 2014.

It is clearly evident that ischaemic heart diseases were the biggest cause of death for both men and women in 2014, accounting for 11,082 and 9,091 deaths, respectively. Dementia including Alzheimer and cerebrovascular diseases were more prevalent among females than males. About 14000 women and slightly more than 8000 men died from them.

Looking at life threatening health problems among men, it is noticeable that trachea, bronchus and lung cancer and chronic lower respiratory diseases were two major killers. These illnesses took the lives of nearly 9000 men as compared to 7000 women.  Surprisingly, the mortality rate due to diabetes was approximately equal for both genders as figures stood at just over 2000 in both cases. Various types of cancers such as skin, blood, colon, breast and prostate etc. were also responsible for numerous deaths of both sexes in that year.

Overall, ischaemic cardiovascular problems contributed to the largest number of deaths in 2014.  Other major causes of deaths reflect a gender bias: mental disorders like dementia and Alzheimer killed more females whereas respiratory diseases led to the loss of lives of more males.

The table compares literacy rates for men and women in Europe and different regions of America, Asia and Africa in the year 2106. The world’s average literacy figures for both the genders are also included.

Overall, what stands out from the table is that there were clear regional differences in the number of literate people. Europe and North America observed the highest literacy rates while the figures were considerably lower in both Southern Asia and Sub-Sahara Africa.

Looking at the details, 86% of the world’s population was able to read and write in 2016, but males outnumbered females (90% versus 83%). Regionally, Europe and North America topped the list with 99% literacy for both men and women. Eastern and South-Eastern Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean were at the second and third positions respectively. Their literacy rates were 96% and 94%. Notably, the figures for both men and women were almost the same in these regions.

In the other listed regions, there were significant differences in literacy rates for both the genders. In Sub-Sahara Africa only 57% females were able to read and write, whereas the figure for Western Asian women was 17% higher. Gender disparity was prevalent in Southern Asia as well. (203 Words.)

IELTS Letter: Request for a new room/dorm

IELTS Letter: Request for a new room/dorm

You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
You live in a room which you share with another student. You have some problems with your roommate.

Write a letter to the accommodation officer of the college to change your room. In your letter

  • mention the problems you are facing
  • say how these problems are affecting you
  • request for a new room.

You do NOT need to write your own address.

Begin your letter as follows.

Dear Sir/Madam,

You should write at least 150 words.

Sample Answer

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing you to request for a new room in the halls of residence as I am facing problems with my current roommate.

The biggest problem is that I am unable to study or even sleep in my room because my roommate has a lot of friends who visit him every day in the evening. They are quite noisy and bothersome. They listen to loud music and play cards till late night. The room has just become a place of entertainment for him and his friends. Furthermore, he often borrows my personal belongings like backpacks, electronic devices and clothes without asking me. I find it very annoying.

His irresponsible behavior has seriously affected my studies. I used to be a bright student in my school but I got average grades in the first semester. Because of these results, I have lost my confidence. I fear if this situation were to extend for much longer, I would have no option but to change my college altogether. For you see I am a student and cannot afford to live outside college or even have a drastic decline in my studies for that matter.

I have tried to talk with him about this issue, to no avail. And thus I find myself having to report the severity of this predicament and to bring it to your notice. I hope by doing so I might be relocated to a more considerable roommate’s presence or if possible not have a roommate at all. As you are probably aware, next term are the semester examinations. If I am found to be lacking in those, I might be asked to leave this college, which as I mentioned previously would be a harsh circumstance.

I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Sagar Victor
