FAQ: Clear Your Doubts About Speaking

There are so many facets in speaking that one often does not realise what is the reason for getting a low band in IELTS. Sometimes it is because of your vocabulary, the other times because you lack confidence and then so many more. But, then you are not alone. There are so many individuals giving IELTS and all of them have so many doubts. Today, lets have a look at some of the most often raised doubts and their answers.
Q1: I have been scoring band 6 in the speaking section for the past four tests that I have given. Having worked at almost everything, from vocabulary to pronunciation to accent, I don’t still realise why I am not getting good band.

Now, in this situation, any of the sane person would lose hope. After all the person asking the question has done everything, right? So, we took a mock speaking test of the person. The candidate truly did had everything. She spoke with fluency, her pronunciation was good and vocabulary was at part. But then there is this one thing that she was lagging at. Often when giving speaking test we forget that it is not only speaking, but speaking plus listening. It is important to give an answer, but what is more important is that you understand the question completely. In this case, the candidate was not able to comprehend the question being asked entirely.

Make sure you understand the question completely, before you answer it.

Q2: It is easy when we are talking with friends. The answers and the posture and the vocabulary, everything comes out very easily. But when it comes to exam, I tend to fail. There are so many thing that I want to say but only thing that I can do is stammer.

This is something that we all face, don’t we. No matter how great speaker you have become, but there must have been a time when you were learning. We always can speak so more confidently with people who we are comfortable with but with strangers, the fears start creeping in. So, what should be done?? Breathe more, take pauses while you are speaking. Make sure the pauses are of less time. Take rehearsals of your exam. Record yourself and listen. You will understand where you are lagging behind.

It takes time to improve. Give it your all.

Q3: Is there any easy way to improve pronunciation?

Practice is the only easy way. Talk louder and slower when talking with people. It will be easy for them to understand. Practice reading loud. You can read some novels or newspapers, anything that interest you. Go on talk with customer care people or some English company to know about the product. They certainly do have an accent and being able to strike a conversation with them will help you lot.

Download podcasts. Listen to them and try to mimic them. Repeat entire sentence along with them, copy the speed, style and pronunciation. Then try to incorporate it in your way of speaking so that you sound more like a native speaker.

Practice copying the native speaker.

Q4: Do we need to use transition words when speaking? I mean is it necessary?

No, of course they are not necessary. The reason why students are asked to use transition words is to ensure that the answer is structured, because a structured answer is very important in IELTS speaking. But, then if you are able to structure your answer in any other way, it is completely fine.

Structuring the answer is important, it does not matter how you do it. Transition words being the easiest way out.

Q5: Do I have to answer all the questions in the IELTS Cue Card?

Yes, you have to. Work through all of them, each of the bullet point, say something or the other. Some sentences, details, something related to your personal history, to display your vocabulary and grammar sense. In this way, you can show case your English talents in the most natural way, which examiner tend to love the most.

Q6: Should I avoid repetition of words?

When we say we don’t want to do it, we do it more often. So, don’t think too much about repeating words or for that case not repeating words. Try to avoid them but don’t be overwhelmed or start panicking just because of it.

Avoid repetition, but don’t panic.

The more naturally you speak the better it is. But then make sure it is in your nature to speak good English, to get high score in IELTS.

IELTS Cue Card Sample Answer # Favorite Restaurant

Describe your favorite restaurant.
You should say-
• where it is?
• What it looks like inside and outside?
• What kind of foods they serve?

What makes this restaurant so special to you and others?

My city is home to numerous fast food outlets and traditional restaurants. Today, I am going to talk about a restaurant which I love.

My favourite restaurant is Countdown and it is situated at the centre of the city I am currently living in. From the outside the restaurant doesn’t look very impressive. It is located on the ground floor of a three storey building. It is quite big width wise, but not in terms of length. It has large glass windows at the front and vehicles are parked all around it. But once you step in, it is not only spacious but surprisingly well-organized and elegant.

They offer a wide range of cuisines including Italian, Indian, Thai, Pakistani and local varieties. This gives you a wide range of options to choose from.

I and many others who know about this place find this restaurant quite unique because of its delicious food and high standard of hygiene. Not only that the prices are also reasonable and the food is served quickly as opposed to some other restaurants where you will have to wait for a long time for your order to appear on your table. They also play soft background music which makes one forget about all the tensions and stress of life.  The waiters and other staff are friendly and welcoming.

Unlike other restaurants, they even ask for feedback and customer complaints are taken very seriously. All in all, I think it is one of the best restaurants in my city and someone visiting the city should surely go there.

IELTS CUE CARD SAMPLE ANSWER FESTIVAL

Sample Answer One

Our country is a secular nation where people of different religions live together. So, there are lots of festivals that people celebrate across the nation. But, I think Diwali is a festival that is celebrated all over India among people of different religions and customs.

Diwali is a festival of lights. Interestingly, its date depends on the Indian astrologers. But, normally, it is celebrated in the last week of October or the first week of November. This festival signifies the victory of the good over evil. The preparations and rituals typically extend over a five-day period, but the main festival night of Diwali coincides with the darkest, new moon night of the Hindu calendar month called Kartika.

It is believed that on this day, Rama, a Hindu god, came back to India after defeating Ravana, a demon. It was also the end of his 14 years of exile. Before Diwali, people clean, renovate and decorate their homes and offices. On that day, people dress up in new clothes or their best outfits and light up oil lamps made from clay inside and outside their homes. They participate in family prayers to Lakshmi – the goddess of wealth and prosperity.

After prayers,  a family feast including delicious sweets begins. This is followed by fireworks and the exchange of gifts between family members and close friends. Diwali is important to me because it brings the whole family together. We are living in a world where people are migrating and have less time, but for us, no matter what the work is, no matter where we are Diwali means a Reunion. The entire family is together and we exchange talks and laughs together.

Sample Answer Two

India is a land of different cultures and people from all walks of life call it home. It has many traditions, customs, and different religions. Festivals are an important part of a religion as they give us reasons to celebrate and different festivals have different significances. Even though there are many different festivals which are celebrated with great joy and happiness in our country, my favorite festival is Christmas. It’s a Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ which falls on the 25th of December every year.

It’s that time of the year when the wind is cold and the woolen jackets are out. Schools are closed for winter break and the streets are lit up with lights of different colors. Luckily as I live in the northern part of the country I have been able to celebrate a few white Christmas over the course of years. My city has a lot of Anglo-Indian heritage so a lot of locals flock the church on Christmas Eve to light up a candle. It is beautiful to witness such communal harmony as the majority of the population in the city itself are Hindus.

It’s a great time for business and locals who work in the tourist sector as loads of tourist come to visit the nearby hill station. Shopping malls and local markets are filled with customers and plenty of attractive discounts are also available in these festive times. We celebrate with a traditional dinner at our home and all the friends and family gather to sing carols. Some great homemade wine is served to all those in attendance and we exchange presents with one another. In the end, it’s all about tradition and even though my entire family lives in different corners of the world, everyone manages to find the time and come home for Christmas to spend some great time with the loved ones. The spirit of Christmas brings us all together.

IELTS Cue Card # Talk about any law in your country

IELTS Cue Card: Talk about any law in your country

You should say:
• What is the law?
• Why is it important?
• When was it implemented?
• Explain what steps have been taken to implement it.

IELTS Cue Card Sample Answer:

In my view, when it comes to effective administration in a large democratic country like India, the legislature needs strict laws. But, it should be taken into consideration that the government should not take away the rights and freedom enjoyed by its citizens. For this, the Indian constitution provides a powerful law. Today, I will be talking about a law which comes under the article 32 of the Indian constitution.
According to this law, any citizen of India can move to the supreme court directly if he finds any of his fundamental right unprotected and the apex court can issue a writ in that case. This law is also called the heart and soul of the Indian constitution.
This law has an immense importance. It not only acts as a safeguard of the fundamental rights of the Indian citizens but acts as a watchdog on the government. It applies reasonable restrictions on the ruling party and its wilful working style. In short, it provides a provision that the parliament cannot override the constitution in any case.
This law was implemented with the commencement of the Indian constitution on 26th January 1950. Interestingly, various judgements have been made in favour of this law since then. To be honest, I am not aware of any steps that have been taken to implement it.
