Sample Answer
The pie charts show how many articles from academic journals were read weekly by undergraduates and PhD students compared to other students at a Canadian College in the year 2015.
Looking at the details, a sizeable majority (75%) of undergraduate students read 1-4 articles per week. In comparison, the average for the entire student body in this category was slightly lower, 65 per cent.  Furthermore, 20% first degree seekers read between 5 and 10 articles a week.  The percentage of average students in this reading group was 3% higher. For the third category, fewer undergraduates read over 11 articles compared with the average student. The figures were 5 per cent and 12 per cent respectively.
Meanwhile, for PhD students the pattern was substantially different. Most read 5 or more articles per week (95%) and out of this total 77 per cent read at least 11 articles a week, which was almost fifteen times the corresponding figure for undergraduates. Notably, only 5% students researching for a PhD read 1-4 articles a week.
Overall, what stands out from the data is that the students who were studying doctorates read more articles per week than either undergraduates or other students.

IELTS Speaking: Part 3 questions

Follow up questions related to animals

Q. 1: Do you think being cruel to an animal is the same as being cruel to a human?

Answer: Certainly, it is. Most animals can’t protect themselves when someone hurts or kills them but they do feel pain. So, in a way animal abuse is much more inhumane.

Q. 2: Should people be allowed to hunt animals for their own entertainment?

Answer: As far as the entertainment is concerned, nowadays people have a lot of means to entertain themselves, so they shouldn’t be allowed to hunt animals for pleasure. In my opinion, hunting for fun should be banned globally. There is no point in killing helpless animals just for the sake of enjoyment. It is morally unacceptable.

Q. 3: How can we help protect endangered species of animals?

Answer: Protecting endangered species is a challenging task. It requires a lot of efforts and commitment. As an individual, we can financially support charities that work for threatened animals. We can even work voluntarily for such organizations.

Q. 4: What sorts of human activities make it more difficult for wild animals to survive?

Answer: According to a World Wildlife Fund report, farming, deforestation and hunting are the major human activities that have threatened the lives of thousands of animal species. Human induced climate change is also a serious threat to wild animals.

Q. 5: Is it fair to make pets out of wild animals?

Answer A:  Honestly speaking, I’m against making pets out of wild animals. They’re called wild animals for a reason. They’re supposed to be free in the wild. Freedom is their fundamental right. If we really want to have a pet, there’re plenty of other options.

Answer B: It’s an interesting question. I’ve never thought about it. But, may be if we have the appropriate facilities, then I don’t suppose raising young ones should be a problem, although it might be a moral dilemma for some.

Q. 6: If a shark kills a human in the sea, should it be hunted down?

Answer: I don’t think so. Hunting is not a feasible solution to this problem as it can affect the ecology of the ocean. In my view, other precautionary measures like nets, drum liners or tagging can be more effective in dealing with the issue of shark attacks.

Q. 7: There are no intelligent animals except humans? Do you agree?

Answer: It’s true that humans are highly intelligent. But, other members of the animal kingdom show signs of intelligence. Chimps, elephants, bottleneck dolphins, dogs, cats and crows etc. are some examples of smart animals. Scientists are busy discovering just how smart they really are.

Educational institutions today are putting a lot of emphasis on academic achievements of students. This essay will look at the reasons behind this growing inclination towards academics and its subsequent effects on school children.

One of the main reasons is the parental pressure. Parents believe that in the times of cut-throat competition, academic achievements alone can promise a secure future.   Nowadays, employers assess young applicants on the basis of their marks and skills. Students with a higher percentage are often given preference over weak performers. Parents therefore pressurise their kids to do well in studies.

Another reason is that outstanding results of students give a school an edge over others. Results have become a parameter which parents consider while getting their children enrolled in a particular institute. Moreover, majority of the schools these days lack sufficient open space for outdoor sports like badminton, cricket and football etc. If they focus primarily on educational outcomes, they can cover-up this shortcoming without compromising their monetary benefits. This scenario is particularly true in Asian countries.

The enormous pressure exerted by the unduly high expectations of schools and parents has a detrimental effect on the overall development of young children. It not only renders them physically unfit but also makes them mentally overworked. Many of them lose their interest in studies and a few may even drop out of school if they cannot handle it. What is more, in the long run, students still remain unprepared for the real world of employment. They lack presentation as well as communication skills which cannot be solely developed by bookish knowledge.

All in all, the focus of schools towards academics can be attributed to parental pressure, lack of space for sports and other activities and bright business prospects it offers to these institutes. However, it hampers the rounded development of pupils. I personally feel that instead of weighing all children on the same scale, individual differences should be respected and strengths be recognized in order to make them shine.
