SAMPLE ANSWER

Today, a wide range of transport are available and air travel is gaining popularity. More and more people are choosing to travel by planes. Here, I would like to talk about a person I know, who loves to travel by air. She is my former classmate, Shweta.  She is an Assistant Professor of International Affairs at the South Asian University, New Delhi.

She is responsible for teaching cultural affairs and international relations to students coming from different South Asian countries. Travelling to other countries to attend various seminars and conferences is an integral part of her job.

Even though we are not in the same profession, we share with each what’s happening in our day to day lives. She loves to talk about her experiences during her flights. Irrespective of the duration of flights she never gets bored during her air travel. The comforts and hospitality on board are the two things she enjoys the most. Her friendly nature attracts many people of different nationalities towards her while travelling. This has added to her experiences. Another thing that she likes about these plane journeys is the type of food offered during the flights.

Though my friend is a frequent traveler, she is super excited whenever she has to travel by plane. Her wonderful experiences always make me more inquisitive about her journeys. In fact very soon we are planning to go on a vacation together and she is going to plan our journey. I am looking forward to enjoying a plane journey with her.

Academic Writing Task: business meetings are being conducted online rather than person to person.

Academic Writing Task-1
Question: More business meetings are being conducted online rather than person to person. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this trend?

Sample Answer:

There is no denying the fact that technology has completely upended our lives. We live in a world where more people communicate with each other via technology than person to person. And business meetings are not immune to this trend. This has both positive and negative aspects, and I will discuss them in the subsequent paragraphs with relevant examples.
To begin with, there are many benefits of exploiting technology to its fullest and people around the world have benefitted tremendously from such modern marvels. Firstly, people can work from anywhere around the world and do not need to be physically present at a particular place. During a meeting they can share the updates and review the data at the click of the button. Secondly, it is of particular significance to people who are unable to travel to office like sick people and pregnant women. Thirdly, it has been found that people are more productive and participate in online meetings more enthusiastically as typically these meetings involve people from higher management. For example, a company I used to work for would have the General Manager among the audience most of the times. As he was based abroad and would rarely visit our office, online meetings made it possible to get in touch with him directly and to keep him in the loop.
There are many disadvantages, however, of online meetings as well. Many people claim that they are unable to present their views adequately, and find it bit inconvenient to meet online. They miss the human touch and the camaraderie between the employees when they choose to meet virtually. Moreover, meetings are not only about business but it also develops a sense of community among the employees. With this significant part missing from their work life, they tend to drift apart from their colleagues.
While I believe technology is the way forward and we cannot shun it altogether, meeting online should be an option we should use sparingly. Completely abandoning meeting in person and using only technology would perhaps not have the desired consequences on either the employees or the company in the long run. (354 words)

IELTS Essay: Computers will be more intelligent than human beings

WRITING TASK 2 Computers will be more intelligent than human beings
You should spend 40 minutes on this task.
Write about the following topic:
  • Some scientists believe that very soon computers will be more intelligent than human beings. Some people think that this will be a positive development, while others worry it will have negative effects.
  • What are your opinions on this?
  • Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words.

Sample Answer:

Human civilization has developed at a staggering pace in the last century. We went from not having sliced bread to being on the path to having supercomputers more powerful than we can comprehend. There is indeed a common presumptuous notion out there; that one-day computers might become ‘more intelligent than human beings’.
The amount of ignorance this specific thought conveys leaves me quite inarticulate. Firstly, computers are digital, brains are analogue. There is no conceivable way to compare these two. Computers are highly logical machines designed to perform tasks; humans are essentially a tangled mass of neurons behaving in an unpredictable manner, which births thoughts, emotions and ideas. Their core functions are polar opposites.
The issue that must be addressed is the highly misdirecting role of movies and entertainment media in presenting Artificial Intelligence as ‘self-sufficient’ and ‘intelligent’ in the manner of independent thought processing.  One cannot press this enough; but machines will never aim for world domination. They have been created for one purpose and one purpose only, to aid humanity.
The world’s fastest computer averages out at 200 petaflops, the human brain has been estimated to run at one exaflop. The difference between them is akin to the earth and sky. Nonetheless, I do not doubt the gap will be closed within the next decade. However, this will just mean that supercomputers will be more efficient at the analysis tasks they perform, this will not mean that they will spontaneously decide to sprout a conscience and destroy the world in the blink of an eye. This idea is so ridiculous it has passed the point of comedic hilarity into plain oblivion and beyond even idiosyncrasy.
I refuse to even acknowledge such a possibility. Computers becoming more efficient than human processing power would be a leap in the fields of data analysis, weather prediction, space calculation, molecular modeling, natural resource exploration, etc. There is absolutely no cause for worry, fear or panic. Only further awareness on the true nature of computers and the fictionality of popular media tropes.
In conclusion, it is inevitable that computers will become more efficient. There are very little drawbacks to this save for initial job losses, the positives outweigh the negatives in all formulate-able aspects.
Staggering very shocking and surprising
Comprehend to understand something completely
Presumptuous Showing little respect for others by doing things they have no right to do
Notion a belief or idea
Inarticulate unable to express feelings or ideas clearly, or expressed in a way that is difficult to understand
Conceivable possible to imagine or to believe
Misdirecting to use something in a way that is not right or legal
Petaflops a unit of computing speed equal to one thousand million million (1015) floating-point operations per second.
Exaflop a billion billion calculations per second (1018)
Comedic relating to or involving comedy
Hilarity a situation in which people laugh very loudly and think something is very funny
Oblivion the state of being completely forgotten
Idiosyncrasy a strange or unusual habit, way of behaving, or feature that someone or something has
Media tropes something such as an idea, phrase, or image that is often used by the media
Fictionality the quality of being fictional (= imaginary)
Inevitable Certain to happen

IELTS CUE CARD – Describe a crowded place you have visited

IELTS CUE CARD – Describe a crowded place you have visited

You should say:

  • Where is it?
  • When you went there?
  • With whom you went there?
  • Explain how you felt about being there?

SAMPLE ANSWER

India is densely populated, so if we are stepping out of our homes we hardly find a place which is not crowded. I normally avoid visiting overcrowded places.

Recently a Shopping Complex was inaugurated in my hometown. It is situated on the outskirts. A lot of advertisements appeared in the local newspaper to promote it. One weekend I decided to visit the Shopping Complex with my friend. It was Sunday and we planned to go there in the afternoon. We reached the Complex at around 3 p.m. I was in the mood of shopping clothes so we headed towards a clothes store inside the Complex. Both of us selected few garments and went towards the trial room to try the outfits.

Surprisingly, there was a long queue outside the trial room. I found it really funny.  My friend and I started giggling about it while waiting for our turn. After waiting for about 15 minutes we were able to try our clothes. Both of us selected a dress each and went towards the billing counter to make payment. On finding a queue there I started laughing again and nudged my friend while waiting for our turn.

As soon as we paid our bills we rushed towards the Food Court as we were quite hungry. It was 5 pm already and the Food Court too was packed with people. With great difficulty we managed to buy burgers and fries for ourselves. While we were eating, the crowd kept on increasing.

We quickly finished our meal as I started feeling suffocated. I rushed out of the Complex gasping for fresh air. That day, I decided I won’t visit this Complex on a Sunday ever again.
