Can you swim?

Yes, I can. We were taught swimming when I was in Class VIII, in my school. It was compulsory for us to learn swimming at that time, and I am thankful to the school to teach us.

Are there many places to swim near you?

Yes, there are few public swimming pool in our city. One of them is very close to my house. There is also a big indoor sports complex in our city, wherein there are two or more swimming pools. Also, some outdoor swimming pools available, but one can use them only in summers as they are very cold in the winters.

Do you think everyone should learn how to swim?

Surely, yes. I think it is very important these days. A person who knows swimming can actually go on and enjoy a different aspect of life i.e. water. Like, if you go on to a beach with your friends, you can enjoy yourself with your friends. Even more, it is very helpful for security reasons and I think it is very important for children to learn it.

Innovation IELTS band7

SAMPLE ANSWER

Every big invention always touches upon human lives and brings about changes. Be it, personal computers, wheels, electricity, aeroplane, the history is filled with the stories of great inventions. I would like to talk about the printing press. German Johannes Guttenberg invented it in the fifteenth century. The printing press uses a mechanised way of transferring ink to the movable type. This movable type process exponentially increases the speed of printing books.

It ultimately led to the rapid and widespread dissemination of knowledge for the first time in human history. Bible was the first book to be published using the Guttenberg printing press. It was the mass production of Bible, that actually led a lot of interpretations about it. For the first time in history, a scientist could easily convey their inventions, leading to a scientific revolution. Also, the literacy rate in adults increased leading to a more knowledgeable society in large. Students began to learn better and grasp concepts better than others.

Some people believe that it was the printing press that actually led to the industrial revolution, the rise of nationalism and much more! It actually did change the way people lived.

IELTS Cue Card Sample Questions # Recent Shop

Living in cities or towns, we often see many shops opening up nearby. Gone are the days when there was only one shop and the entire clan was dependant on it. We now notice the opening of multinational brands and the coming of shopping malls in countries worldwide. The world has now truly become a global village. This time, we are looking at an IELTS cue card that asks you to describe about a recent shop that opened up in your city or town.

Describe a shop that recently opened in your city/country.

You should say:
  • what its name is
  • where it is
  • who the typical customers are

and say if you have bought anything from the shop. Why/Why not?

SAMPLE ANSWER ONE

New shops and international brands are paving their way into my country. Although India itself has got numerous outlets of international brands but they are mostly confined to metropolitan cities. In recent years, my city has seen an influx of international brands and one such company unveiled a new store recently.

It’s a new Lacoste outlet that has recently been inaugurated. With the traditional crocodile sign put on the clothing is a signature trademark and it is very easily recognisable.
The store is located in the heart of the city, right next to the cinema plaza. The store had been under construction for a while. It was only that when they put up ads in the newspaper saying “the world’s most favourite brand is now in your city” that’s when people realised, it is about time we put the rumours to bed.

The clothing company is a well known in the world and the quality of their products is second to none. It is a French company and all of their clothes are imported so majority of its customers are individuals that have selective taste in clothing or I can say it caters to a very posh crowd. The entire range of clothes is expensive but that crocodile emblem on the merchandise in itself tells a different story and is totally worth it.

Yes I did buy a shirt from the store. I always wanted one and they had an inaugural discount of extra 20 percent. From the moment I stepped inside the store, I had my eyes set up on a navy shirt with a white logo on the right pocket. It was very expensive but then again good things don’t come cheap. I have one more shirt to add to my party wear collection and when I do wear it, trust me I set fire to the rain.

SAMPLE ANSWER TWO

I presently reside in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. Dehradun is a beautiful city and has recently become one of the cities aimed at becoming a metropolitian city. This decision has led to many changes happening in my town. We saw the coming of Ola and Uber and then several constructions, like flyovers etc. But, along with it, there has been an upsurge in the number of shops in my town.

One recent shop that opened up in the center of the town and fascinated a lot of crowds is the “The Baby Shop”. It has a three-storeyed building with an amazing infrastructure and is the first shop in our city to be open 24 * 7. It is a great shop for babies with a wide range of items available necessary for babies until 10 years of age. Right from, cradle to clothes, play pen and including toys like a fighter plane etc.

Besides children, parents expecting a child or the ones with children below 10 years often visit the place. What is more beautiful and satisfying about the shop is the easy accessibility of items and a very kind staff. It was only a few weeks back that I had to visit the shop for getting a gift for my nephew. My nephew loves clothes and toys and I bought them from “The Baby Shop” at very reasonable prices. I still remember the smile she gave me.

Vocabulary

cradle – small bed for a baby

playpen – a portable usually collapsible enclosure in which a baby or young child may play

upsurge – a rapid or sudden rise

reasonable – fair and sensible

IELTS Cue Card Sample Answer # Book That Influenced You

Describe a book that had a major influence on you.

You should say :

  • what the name of the book and the author is
  • how did you get to know about it
  • what is the main story of it

explain why it played such an important role in your life

Whenever I get time I try to read books ranging from fiction to non fiction and then travel books to sometimes autobiographies. But, the book that tremendously influenced me in my college life was “Archies comic books”. The characters of Archie Comics were written by John L. Goldwater. The comics have a very long history, starting from around 1939 up till present.

The story of the comic revolves around Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead, Josie, Kelvin and lots more. It is all about the lives of an average teenager, what are the problems they face, the kind confusions they have to tackle, how they balance their work and their studies and then what is it about love and friendship. There are so many more emotions with archies that one feels as if it is all happening in front of you and you can relate to it. So, we all have friends and family and then people we are jealous of and then things we do just for ourselves. There is this fight for making a career out of ourselves and a desire to be loved.

However, what influenced me the most and made me take decisions I won’t have taken other wise, was the character of Betty. She is friends with everyone and is a loving daughter and sister. She likes to help the homeless, read to the senior citizens, and rescue wounded animals and birds. She loves cooking, playing sports and make her own clothing. She runs small business here and there and then she loves animals. She does all of it, no matter how much trouble it causes her. Apart from all of this, she is a above average in academics.

Book That Influenced You

And then she loves Archies and is best friends with Veronica. This character of her inspired me to be something. I mean she had it all, she was good in studies, had friends, was doing things  and having good life. It was then that I realized that we all can have good lives. And just because I am studying does not mean I cannot have a job and then just because I have work does not mean I cannot have friends. Betty’s character allowed me to open up to all new possibilities. I remember, taking up a job and working on it. And that job has helped me a lot. I now try to be involved in more extra-curricular activities and make sure that whatever I do is par excellence.

She also taught me to be happy and enjoy life and in the midst of everything do things for oneself. There are lot of things that people learnt from Archies but for me it was the Betty’s character that just changed the way I looked at things.

After the cue card are the follow up questions. So, if there is a cue card like this, you can have follow up questions as given below –

How often do you read books?

I love reading books and read them almost every day. I have dedicated some time for reading books and ensure that I get to read a novel or may be magazine during that time.

How books can impact on a man’s life?

I believe it depends on how and what kind of books you are reading. So, may be a book or child abuse has no affect on someone who had a very nice past but may be someone who had felt it, could just relate to it and do things to make one’s life better. In that way, books make an impact. Because they allow you to figure out unanswered things about yourself and may be motivate in so many ways. So, if you read a book by Gandhi, you would most probably prefer saying the truth and then if you a read a book by kalam, you would just go out and give your best.

Name some of the famous writers of your country?

Our country has got some good writers and the ones people are crazy about would be Chetan Bhagat, Durjoy Dutta, Ravinder Singh, Rashmi Bansal, Aruna Nair and few others. It was Chetan Bhagat who started writing novels which struck to the minds of people and the language was such that more and more people started reading novels. Apart from these, some of the great writers of our country include, Premchand, Harivansh rai bachan, Arundhati roy, Vikram Seth, R.K Narayan and more.

Have you ever thought about writing a book?

Yes, but I think I have left it to the quote that I read. It was like ,” If it does not comes out of you automatically, if it is not something you feel like doing again and again, there is no point of doing it”. And about writing book, it will be like that. I will write a book but only when it is straight from my heart, when I would just not stop to write it and the only thing in my mind would be that book.

How reading books is different from watching movies?

Movies have more impact in a sense, that you can see exactly what the characters are doing and for someone who cannot relate well to the characters by reading, audio and video are better things to do.
