I think older people are the most experienced and well-versed in a lot of things that we as youngsters sometimes are not able to understand. Today, I would like to talk about the culinary skill, that I learned from my grandfather, as he is a great cook and loves to cook a plethora of cuisines, which I cherish a lot.

I was never into cooking before, until the day when I went to my grandfather’s house to spend my summer vacation holidays. I can still recall, it was a dull afternoon and I was just sleeping on a couch and suddenly my grandfather called me out in the kitchen and asked me for some help there. The beautiful aroma of the food was mouth-watering, and I asked him out of excitement if he could teach me what he was cooking. He instantly said yes, and enlightened me with the spices and other ingredients used in it, such as clove, turmeric, and red chili powder along with some healthy and fresh green vegetables. I really enjoyed learning this skill under his guidance, because unlike others he was quite patient with every mistake that I made and made sure that I did not repeat them.

Ever since then, I developed a keen interest in cooking, and, not only do I do it for myself but also love to feed others on special occasions with the handmade delicacies that I got to learn from him. I really feel that it was a jubilant experience for me to be able to not only learn this vital skill, but also I was able to spend some good quality time with him. This skill really made me feel happy, and I will always be grateful to my grandfather for teaching me and helping me gain a relevant skill to my skill set.

Therefore, this was a skill that I learned from my grandfather.

CUE CARD – Describe a time when you missed an appointment

Speaking -Part 2 (Cue Card)

Describe something you received for free
You should say:

    • When and where did it happen ?
    • What was the appointment for ?
    • What happened when you missed it ?
    • And, explain how you felt about the appointment.

Sample Answer

Skilled people work with appointments. If you approach anyone without a prior appointment you may be disappointed. But sometimes, there are circumstances that cause you to miss a scheduled appointment. Today, I would be mentioning a time when I missed a very important appointment. After completing my graduation, I was looking for a relevant job to bear my expenses. I searched for various jobs on online portals. I luckily found one and immediately applied for the same. The next day, I received a call from HR. She explained the selection process to get hired. I will have to clear two hiring rounds, a telephonic round and Face to Face interview. I passed the telephonic round and was qualified to appear for the final round. The HR sent me the details about the timings and the venue. I was excited and confident about the interview. To avoid inconvenience, I left the house on time and was constantly on pins and needles. While commuting to the office, I got stuck in the tiring traffic congestion. I was getting this feeling that I would not be late and would reach the place on time. I tried contacting the manager to inform her about the situation, but I dropped the plan assuming it would not leave a good impression on her. After a while, traffic got cleared, and I took a sigh of relief. The moment I reached the address I quickly rushed into the office but was half an hour late on top of it I had left my credentials at home. I felt horrible and somehow managed to control my tears. I was scared but kept my finger crossed. The HR was not in a good mood and did not agree to proceed further with my interview. I tried to explain my situation but could not convince HR. That day, I learned an important lesson, if you want your time to be considered, you must respect others’ time. Being aware of the traffic problem in my city, I could have left my home early to prevent being late. Another lapse I committed was being reckless by getting over-excited. That resulted in leaving my credentials at home. That was one of the worst incidents I have encountered because of my negligence.

I believe it is a human tendency to love receiving freebies, as, who wants to spend money on things when one can get them for free. Today, I would like to talk about one such time, when I received earphones for free, along with a brand new phone that I purchased from the store. Actually, I really needed a new phone from a very long time, and so, I went to the nearest Samsung store to check out some updated android versions.

When I entered the store, the receptionist was very kind and warmly welcomed me. She asked me about my preferences and budget. Accordingly, she was showing me all the samples. At first, I was really enticed and perplexed at the same time, as I could not decide which one to buy. Finally, after giving it a lot of thought, I chose the one which cost me around fifteen thousand rupees , and to my surprise, the owner told me that I have received a pair of free earphones, which was white in color. He told me that it was a gesture of goodwill to enhance customer experience, so on every purchase of worth more than ten thousand rupees, they gift free earphones.

I was really happy to receive it, as I saved a big amount on it and I used that money to purchase a beautiful Pashmina shawl which I gifted my mother on her thirty-eighth birthday. Furthermore, they were noise cancellation earphones, therefore the sound quality was quite refined. I really enjoyed listening to soothing music on rainy days, sitting by the window side sipping hot tea from my favorite cup, with my earphones on.
Overall, this was a time when I received something for free.

Q1. Do you think people should pay for higher education ?
Well, I am a strong believer of the saying, nothing valuable comes for free in life. So, to answer your question I definitely feel that people should invest in their higher education.

Q2. Is it good or bad for people to have a free education in future ?
I believe it is very good for few deserving individuals who come from not so privileged family background to have access to free education in future, as everyone has a right to education, and so, I believe no one should fail to get basic education just because of financial issues. But on the flip side, there are some people, who take things for granted, and so, it is required that universities do charge some amount to impart education to these students, for they must realise the value of education.

He is a philanthropist and the most respected industrialist in India. Ratan Naval Tata is the Chairman of Tata Sons and Tata Group. He was born on 28 December 1937, presently he is 84 years old. I got to know about his life junctures on the internet since then I became his fan and started looking up to him as my role model. He started his career at the root level working alongside blue-collar employees at Tata Steel despite being the future chairman of Tata Group. Ratan Tata has been the best chairman in India, he has always put social and employee welfare above any commercial gains. Even though born and brought up in luxury, Ratan Tata is concerned about the widespread poverty and destitution in India and has done numerous philanthropic activities providing quality life, and education to the poor. Ratan Tata is a generous man by all accounts. Any cause that appealed to him received a substantial donation. Sportsmen, actors, famous businessmen, and politicians are quite famous in my country. Many of them have become global artists and have huge fan bases in other countries as well. For instance, Priyanka Chopra in Bollywood, Ratan Tata in business, Virat Kohli in Sports, and many more have gained international recognition.

Q2. How do people become famous nowadays ?
Today, the commencement of social media has proven to be the most preferred medium to achieve fame. For many individuals, social media is considered a ladder that will lead them to success. All they have to do is to post something entertaining or unique if their content gained good views they are famous. Many people gained popularity overnight via social media.

Q3. What is the difference between people who were famous earlier and who are famous now ?
People who were famous earlier were more humble and hardworking than today. Many people did not have any connections in the industry they build their name on their own. They proved themselves worthy to be entitled as stars. Whereas, today majority of famous people are famous because of the hard work done by their forefathers. Another difference would be modesty and humility for others. Today’s generation is considered to be rude and selfish once they gain fame, they become completely ignorant about others and often forget their roots.

Q4. What qualities do famous people have in common ?
Well, everyone is different and is blessed with unique qualities. But the virtue, I find common in famous people is hard work. To shine like the Sun one has to burn like a Sun. An individual has to be very persistent and must put in the utmost effort to enjoy fame. Apart from it, they have excellent dress sense, as they have many proficient people who guide them to maintain their good looks.
