IELTS Writing Task 2 – Essay

Problem of Loneliness and lack of physical fitness among old people. A lot of old people are suffering from loneliness these days. They also lack physical fitness. What do you think are the reasons for this problem? Can you think of possible solutions?

Sample Answer-

In the past, the elderly led a healthier and happier life. But, nowadays, the situation has changed significantly. There are various possible reasons behind emerging issues related to loneliness in old people’s lives. However, by taking some steps this problem can be tackled wisely.

To begin with, one of the major factors is the rising popularity of nuclear families. If we observe around us, it can be said that younger people are more inclined towards single family concept instead of living in a joint family. Young generation does not hesitate to abandon their parents or grandparents in a village to lead a better life in metropolitan cities. Another key factor, generation gap is widening day-by-day. This causes clash of ideas among family members and disrespect towards older people. To avoid this many families are falling apart.

Due to solitude in old age, many older people start losing their interest towards life. Negligence and lack of affection and love from their younger ones are also discouraging them to have an active lifestyle. Affecting by their surroundings, older people lack their interest in their social lives and stop giving preference to be healthy and happy.

In order to solve this uncongenial situation, first of all, people should be encouraged to live in a joint family. Living together will not only help older people but also young generation. Earlier elders used to be considered the back bone of any family because of their unconditional love and guidance to the posterity, same can be re-lived in this era. Moreover, by introducing old age club, they can live and mingle with same age people and can motivate each other to be livelier even in the later years of their lives.

To sum up, fast paced life, changing family structure and lack of love and affection are the main reasons behind developing this negative attitude among older people. There is no doubt that by adopting traditional ways of living and by being more attentive towards them, we can help them to live an active life.

IELTS Speaking Task # A foreign cultural festival that you like.

IELTS Speaking Task – 2 Cue Card

Describe a foreign cultural festival that you like

  • What it is about
  • How you know about it
  • What difference there is between that culture and your own

And explain why you like that foreign culture.

The manifold cultures are a set of learned behaviors, beliefs and norms of a specific group of individuals. Our world is full of a variety of cultures and it is something that makes every community unique. I’ve had the opportunity to experience some of the cultures when I was on a recent reunion trip to Nepal with my schoolmates. As one of our friends was from Nepal itself, we came across different cultural traditions that are practiced in that region.

We planned our trip in November, during our festive break. Surprisingly, a similar festival was taking place in Nepal which was enriched with rituals and the citizens of the country were busy decorating, making most of the festive mood. The ritual that fascinated me the most was a festival called ‘Kukur Puja’ which literally means the worship of dogs. The people of that country devoted a mini-festival solely to human’s most devoted friend faithful companion.

Being a dog lover myself, it really delighted me to witness these adorable canines treated with special love and admiration. During this festival, the Nepalese offer flower garlands and delicious food to their pet dogs as well as stray dogs which symbolized their sacredness. This particular festival is not practiced in the culture I come from.  Animals, especially dogs are ill-treated and mishandled not only in India but other parts of the world as well. Humans use them for scientific experiments while some slaughter them for meat.

In Nepal, dogs are considered as mankind’s guardian. After talking to some of the inhabitants, I learned that they trusted dogs to accompany them on the way to heaven.  I felt extremely overwhelmed to be a part of this heart-melting festival of Kathmandu.

Sample Answer

I am an avid user of the internet. I use it almost on a daily basis. I wouldn’t lie I am quite reliant on the internet. I recently came across the Indian railway website and a special feature of the site is that it allows visitors to check the live status of the train. I was quite awestruck as I wasn’t even aware of this service launched by the Indian railways. It is a very useful website and it came in quite handy during those troublesome times when my mother came to visit me and I didn’t have any information about her coming to visit me.
At first I looked on the website of the Indian railways and a pop up came up asking me to install the app on my phone. I promptly installed the application on my Iphone and proceeded to look for the information. At first it wasn’t quite clear where to look but the help section in the app proved to be quite useful. It guided me step by step and gave me live updates of the train. The information was quite clear and what astonished me the most was that you can make bookings through the app as well.
Well my mother isn’t a frequent traveller and more often than not she is accompanied by someone or the other on her travels. Out of the blue she decided to come and visit me and I was informed about her plans quite late. Her train was meant to arrive at Delhi railway station by 10:30 pm and by the time I got there I was already late by 15 minutes. To my surprise, no information about the train was available and nobody was present in the enquiry booth. I started looking online and came to know that the train was late by 1 hour.
Firstly, I was greatly relieved that I hadn’t missed her and that she is still on board. I came to know of the arrival time and live status of the train through the app. It also gave information about the platform on which the train was meant to arrive and I made my way to the platform instantly. After waiting for almost an hour the train arrived and I picked her up.
