IELTS Cue Card Sample Questions # Recent Shop

Living in cities or towns, we often see many shops opening up nearby. Gone are the days when there was only one shop and the entire clan was dependant on it. We now notice the opening of multinational brands and the coming of shopping malls in countries worldwide. The world has now truly become a global village. This time, we are looking at an IELTS cue card that asks you to describe about a recent shop that opened up in your city or town.

Describe a shop that recently opened in your city/country.

You should say:
  • what its name is
  • where it is
  • who the typical customers are

and say if you have bought anything from the shop. Why/Why not?

SAMPLE ANSWER ONE

New shops and international brands are paving their way into my country. Although India itself has got numerous outlets of international brands but they are mostly confined to metropolitan cities. In recent years, my city has seen an influx of international brands and one such company unveiled a new store recently.

It’s a new Lacoste outlet that has recently been inaugurated. With the traditional crocodile sign put on the clothing is a signature trademark and it is very easily recognisable.
The store is located in the heart of the city, right next to the cinema plaza. The store had been under construction for a while. It was only that when they put up ads in the newspaper saying “the world’s most favourite brand is now in your city” that’s when people realised, it is about time we put the rumours to bed.

The clothing company is a well known in the world and the quality of their products is second to none. It is a French company and all of their clothes are imported so majority of its customers are individuals that have selective taste in clothing or I can say it caters to a very posh crowd. The entire range of clothes is expensive but that crocodile emblem on the merchandise in itself tells a different story and is totally worth it.

Yes I did buy a shirt from the store. I always wanted one and they had an inaugural discount of extra 20 percent. From the moment I stepped inside the store, I had my eyes set up on a navy shirt with a white logo on the right pocket. It was very expensive but then again good things don’t come cheap. I have one more shirt to add to my party wear collection and when I do wear it, trust me I set fire to the rain.

SAMPLE ANSWER TWO

I presently reside in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. Dehradun is a beautiful city and has recently become one of the cities aimed at becoming a metropolitian city. This decision has led to many changes happening in my town. We saw the coming of Ola and Uber and then several constructions, like flyovers etc. But, along with it, there has been an upsurge in the number of shops in my town.

One recent shop that opened up in the center of the town and fascinated a lot of crowds is the “The Baby Shop”. It has a three-storeyed building with an amazing infrastructure and is the first shop in our city to be open 24 * 7. It is a great shop for babies with a wide range of items available necessary for babies until 10 years of age. Right from, cradle to clothes, play pen and including toys like a fighter plane etc.

Besides children, parents expecting a child or the ones with children below 10 years often visit the place. What is more beautiful and satisfying about the shop is the easy accessibility of items and a very kind staff. It was only a few weeks back that I had to visit the shop for getting a gift for my nephew. My nephew loves clothes and toys and I bought them from “The Baby Shop” at very reasonable prices. I still remember the smile she gave me.

Vocabulary

cradle – small bed for a baby

playpen – a portable usually collapsible enclosure in which a baby or young child may play

upsurge – a rapid or sudden rise

reasonable – fair and sensible

IELTS Cue Card: A special cake you made for someone

IELTS Cue Card: A special cake you made for someone

You should say:

  • who you made the cake for
  • what the occasion was
  • what type of cake it was
  • and explain how that person felt on receiving the cake.

Sample Answer

Any special occasion is incomplete without cakes. That’s what I suppose. On last Mother’s day, I thought of giving my mom a little surprise. I planned to bake a delicious cake for her.

Early morning I went to a nearby grocery store to buy all the ingredients I needed to make the cake. I bought flour, cocoa powder, some cookies, chocolate chips and whip cream. I bought a big bar of dark chocolate as well.

My mom happens to be a big fan of dark chocolate. I decided to bake a dark chocolate cake for her. I searched for a recipe online and followed the process step by step. I mixed the flour well with butter and added the cocoa powder according to the measurements described. I melted the dark chocolate bar and added the same to the mixture. The batter smelled great.

Once the batter was ready, I heated the oven and poured the batter into the mould and let it go for baking. Meanwhile, I went to a nearby florist to get some red roses for my mother. Once the cake was ready I decided to decorate it with everything that I had on hands. I used Oreo cookies to build the boundary layer around the cake, accompanied by a fine cream rim. I made a small wafer board with “Happy Mother’s Day” written and put it on the cake.

I took the cake to my mom and she was surprised to see it. I gave her the flowers too. She was delighted beyond words. She happily took the knife and cut the cake and offered me a piece. It was delectable. I wished her a happy Mother’s Day and hugged her. As it was a big cake, she even shared it with her friends. Everybody loved it. I felt great for making her day special.

quiet place IELTS Cue Card

SAMPLE ANSWER

I am an extrovert as an individual and usually prefer loud places, with parties or gatherings going on. However, there are certain times when I do like being in quiet. Times when things go out of hand and I am unable to make a correct decision. Or situations where I feel emotionally drained. For these moments, I prefer going on a long walk during the evenings towards the Cantonment area. It is around 100 mts from my place and post that there are trees on both the sides of the road and less of vehicles going up and down from the area in the evenings.

Also, there are guards at almost every 100 mt distance, making it a safe place. In the area, there is a park, where people usually go for jogging and after a long walk I like sitting there. Most of the times I gaze stars from there and help my mind to be out of every thought it has and meditate.

I remember the last time I went there was when I had a huge fight with my best friend. He started questioning my being and it felt bad. There were acquisition and all of a sudden I started questioning all relationships. Things were going bizarre and I went for a long walk in the evening.

IELTS Cue Card: Talk with a stranger

Describe a situation when you had a talk with a stranger.

You should say:

  • who the person was
  • where you met him/her
  • what the conversation was about
  • and explain why you found the conversation exciting.
Sample Answer:

I enjoy meeting new people. Today I’m going to talk about a time when I met a stranger and had an interesting conversation with him.
On weekends I go to Rishikesh for learning yoga.  I normally travel by bus as the buses are quite regular and comfortable. But, on last Sunday, bus drivers were on a one day strike. So, I had to drive in the morning. This time there were many foreigners in the yoga centre. All of us did yoga for about 2 hours. Thereafter, we went to the dining hall for breakfast. Naturally, I started interacting with the person sitting next to me. He was from Scotland and had come to India to complete a 120-hour yoga course. His name was Thomson.
Somehow, the focus of our conversation went to festivals and celebrations in our respective countries. He shared some interesting information about the New Year’s Eve Celebrations in Scotland. It’s called Hogmanay. The origins of this word are unclear but it’s the biggest Scottish celebration.

Many traditions like cleaning the house and singing etc. are observed on this auspicious day. The most important of them is first-footing, where families wait for the first person to visit their homes at midnight. Surprisingly, the first foot must be a man or a boy with dark hair, not a woman. It’s believed that the first foot brings fortune to the family for the New Year.  If you are the first foot, you should carry three things: food, coal and something to drink.

I found this conversation very exciting because I didn’t know anything about Hogmanay. The way we celebrate the New Year is very different from how it is celebrated in Scotland. This conversation gave me a glimpse of the Scottish culture. Altogether, the novelty of this information and his friendliness made it a memorable interaction.
