  • what usually happens in the television programme

Sample Answer:

I would like to talk about HOUSE MD. It is an American television medical drama. The series’ main character is Dr Gregory House played by Hugh Laurie, an unconventional, misanthropic medical genius who, despite his dependence on pain medication, leads a team of diagnosticians at the fictional Princeton–Plainsboro Teaching Hospital (PPTH) in New Jersey.
House often clashes with his fellow physicians, including his own diagnostic team, because many of his hypotheses about patients’ illnesses are based on subtle or controversial insights. His flouting of hospital rules and procedures frequently leads him into conflict with his boss, hospital administrator and Dean of Medicine Dr Lisa Cuddy played by Lisa Edelstein. House’s only true friend is Dr James Wilson played by Robert Sean Leonard, head of the Department of Oncology.
I really like watching House, for Gregory and his unconventional medical theories and practices (like giving placebo to patients) and on the other characters’ reactions to them, rather than on the details of the treatments. He frequently proclaims during the team’s deliberations, “The patient is lying”, or “Everybody lies”; such an assumption guides House’s decisions and diagnoses. Because many of his hypotheses are based on epiphanies or controversial insights, he often has trouble obtaining permission for medical procedures he considers necessary from his superior.
Total of eight seasons, House was among the top 10 series in the United States from its second through fourth seasons. Distributed to 66 countries, House was the most-watched television program in the world in 2008. I would recommend it to other people for, this series offers insight into the medical world and various types of diseases which most of us have never heard of. And how by running differential diagnosis and listing etiologies they finally narrow down to the cause, find the correct diagnosis and save the patient. (301 words)

Sample Answer:

The line graph provides information about the amount of money which was earned monthly by four restaurants in a city in 2010.
Overall, what stands out from the graph is that there were considerable upwards trends in the income of Delicacy, Evening paradise and Grand Fiesta, while the earnings of Spicy Fortune witnessed a considerable fall over the year. Another interesting point is that Spicy Fortune was the most popular restaurant in January, but in December, Evening Paradise earned more money than the others.
Looking at the details, in January 2010, Spicy Fortune was the biggest earner with a monthly income of almost $160,000. In the following months, its earnings first fluctuated and then declined steadily before ending at nearly $50,000 in December.
In contrast, the monthly incomes of other three restaurants went up by varying degrees. There was a rise in Delicacy’s earnings over the first ten months, followed by a sudden increase to $120,000 in December. Grand Fiesta and Evening Paradise started with significantly different figures in January, about $100,000 and $50,000, respectively. The former experienced a steady fall until June, but after that, income rose significantly to just under $140,000 in December. Likewise, the trend for Evening Paradise was upward. From January to July, earnings doubled from about $50,000 to nearly $100,000 and ended the year with the highest income of around $190,000.

Sample Answer:

The line graph provides information about how the mean monthly temperatures vary in Paris, Dubai and Sydney over the course of a year.

One striking feature of the graph is that Paris experiences its lowest temperatures in December/January. In the following six months, the mercury rises gradually and hits its peak at 20°C in July/August. From September onwards, the figures drop steadily before reaching their minimum value of around 5°C in December/January. Interestingly, the temperature patterns for Dubai are similar to Paris, although it has warmer winters and hotter summers. The lowest and highest temperatures in Dubai are around 20°C and 36°C respectively.

On the other hand, the temperature variations in Sydney are opposite to that observed in Paris and Dubai. Sydney has its hottest weather in December/January when the mercury hovers around 23°C. In the next six months, there is a gradual decline in the mercury levels which reach their lowest level of nearly 13°C in July. Thereafter, the temperature follows an upward trend until December.

Overall, the mean monthly temperatures are the highest in Dubai and are the lowest in Paris. In comparison, Sydney has moderate mercury levels throughout the year.

Writing Task 2 Essay # Traditional food

Academic Writing Task 2
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Write about the following topic:
Convenience foods will become increasingly prevalent and eventually replace traditional foods and traditional methods of food preparation. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience
Write at least 250 words.

Sample Answer

Recent years have witnessed a dramatic change in the type of food people consume. Nowadays, convenience foods or most commonly known as processed foods form a major part of most people’s diet, especially in developed countries. Considering the strong influence of this trend on global food habits, it is often claimed that the popularity of such foods will rise substantially in the future and traditional foods will disappear. I completely agree with this statement.

There are two main reasons why processed foods are likely to become more popular in the coming years. Firstly, the decline in family size and the increase in single-adult households have rendered cooking unnecessary. In the past, people lived in large families where one person looked after time-consuming domestic tasks such growing and preparing food.  Definitely, this way of living was more economical in those times. But, in today’s fast-paced world, where nuclear and single parent families have become the norm, preparing food daily is often seen as a useless and boring activity.

Secondly, the number of full-time working mothers is increasing day by day. Maintaining a fine balance between personal and work life has become a herculean task for many females. Most of them, therefore, prefer to use the fastest means of satisfying their children’s hunger. Since convenience foods take less time to prepare, they generally turn out to be the easiest option. Undoubtedly, this trend is a serious threat to the existence of traditional foods as our young children are highly likely to imitate what they see every day.

To sum up, I strongly believe that there is a close relation between our way of living and food habits. In this modern world, people are choosing ready to eat foods over conventional foods for two main reasons mentioned above. If this trend continues, I have no doubt that traditional food will become a thing of the past. (313 Words. IELTS Band 9 Standard)
