SAMPLE ANSWER

I am a bookworm so clothes are rarely the items that I do prefer for gifts. However, recently on my 22nd birthday, my parents gifted me one of the best clothes present in my wardrobe currently. For a very long time, I had been longing for a leather jacket and my parents knew about it. However, for certain other responsibilities, it was always out of the budget to be able to buy one.

But on my birthday, my father asked me to go and get ready for a tour of a nearby town and asked me to wear a jacket as it will be cold outside. Initially, I was puzzled about his specificness on the jacket, but I went straight to my room only to be amazed and surprised by the jacket hanging outside my wardrobe. It was a black jacket with the rider look. Next to it was a traveler bag and there was nothing more I could have asked for. I dressed up and hugged my parents for the gift.

It was an extraordinary gift for me simply because it was something my parents gifted me. My brother later told me that they had spent weeks deciding on the clothes that I can have and finally after a lot of discussions decided to go for it. Looking back at it, I still cherish the gift and the moments we spent together. Later when I decided to become a traveler, the jacket was the first thing I had to motivate me to follow my dream.

My mother came up to me before the party with a little silver parcel with a red bow. I knew that she had some amazing surprise planned for me. But I had no idea as to what she could possibly get for me. In fact, it was out of my idea that she would bring me a little black dress. She is well aware of the love I have for black clothing’s. My mother is an amazing woman.

She loves to plan surprises for people, I was really impressed with her choice and my mom was equally happy to complete her goal. She bought a matching pair of wedges to go along with the dress. I was so happy that she could cater to all my needs without me asking her to do so.

Of course, it was an extraordinary gift to me. It was from the woman who has always been a source of inspiration to me. She is a very empathetic lady. I admire this quality of her. Besides, it was my birthday gift from her. I tried it on with sheer interest and absolutely loved it. Moreover, the dress was made of the colour I really like. Speak about an item of clothing that someone gave you.

  • What was that clothing?
  • When did you get it?
  • Who gave you that?

And How did you feel about it?

SAMPLE ANSWER Two-

Well, we all receive gifts on some of the special occasions in our lives. Take for instance, we all receive gifts on our birthdays and weddings. This symbolises love, care and friendship others feel for that person. I, too, used to receive gifts on my birthdays, particularly, when I was a child. On one of these occasions, when I turned 12, I received a fabulous item of clothing from my elder sister. I can clearly remember that track suit from Puma, it was white base with light green and blue waves imprinted on it. I was in a boarding school at that time and we have the winter onset just around my birthday. I can clearly remember the peculiar sparky brightness in that track suit that gave it a silk like appearance. It was imported from Singapore and being such an outstanding brand in sports outfits, it was a clearly my favourite in those days.

My sister used to work in an MNC, back then. She often had the opportunities to visit abroad, specially the South East Asia. So, she had a visit just prior to my birthday too. She clearly had in her mind, that I needed a track suit at that time, for my sports in the school. She made that choice for me and brought that suit from Singapore.

Well, as I have already mentioned, that the track suit was an instant favourite for me out of all my previous clothing. Apart from its satiny outlook and light fabric, this jogging suit was extremely warm too, which made it very comfortable to wear. I simply felt fantastic when I received this clothing. I was, kind of, jubilantly marching down my colony lanes, wearing my favourite suit and a big glee on my face. Some of our neighbours gave me the new pinch too. I was feeling very happy and proud of myself at that time. Few days later, when I my school reopened, I had to take that track suit there, for my friends to see the Puma track suit from Singapore. I tried not to rough play with that suit and used to take care of it. I just loved that outfit in my teen days.

STRONG WORDS
Word Meaning
Jubiliant express great happiness: I was jubilant, after I received my IELTS scorecard.
Glee delight: One should always keep that glee in the heart, even in bad days.
Follow-up Questions

Q. 1 Do boys like clothing items more or girls?

Sample answer: I think, except for a few common items of dressing, like shirts and jeans, I think both the genders have their respective segments of clothing. Therefore, what I feel is that both, boys as well as girls like the new clothing items.

Q. 2 Do you prefer branded items and why?

Sample answer: Well, I do prefer the branded items. The reason being, their superior quality fabric, comfortable and durable to wear, along with their latest designs and trends. Brands are usually updated on fashion statements and therefore wearing the branded clothing always makes me feel so modern about myself.

Q. 3 Do you never wear the non-branded items?

Sample answer: No, it’s not like that. My preference for branded clothings doesn’t create any immunity for non-branded ones. Whenever I have a tight pocket and I happen to get across some good clothing at reasonable price, I at once go for it, even though it is not branded.

Q. 4 What kind of outfits do you prefer to wear?

Sample answer: Well, we have different set of clothes at different times of the day. While in college or at office, I will obviously be wearing the formal attire. But, once at home, I always prefer the loose open T shirts and not so tight payjamas. That keeps me comfortable and I think comfort is the best fashion in clothing.

Fig: IELTS Cue Card school rule

SAMPLE ANSWER

Schools have always been the institution of teaching discipline and hard work and mine was the epitome of it. I studied in a convent school and there were many rules which we had to adhere to. But, after a change in our principal, a new rule was established which stated that any student who is late for school would not be allowed to attend the first three classes. On looking back at the rule, I can understand the reason for its severity. Students would have surely and they did avoided being late.

However, during that time, when the rule was beginning to apply, there was a lot of hustle and bustle in the school. Many students of the primary classes on getting late had to stand outside and wait for the first three lectures to complete. There were even cases when the children who got late were bullied and I can clearly remember one case. A child of fourth grade was late and when he reached the class, he was teased by his peers for a week. It led to his health deteriorating and his parents had to complain.

On the other side, many formed friendships with their late comers and so they came purposely late.

The intentions of the rule, in my opinion, were good but could have been implemented other wise. Students getting late could have been recorded and actions taken on them for being late for three consecutive days. In this way, we could have avoided the bullying and the extreme laziness which the rule brought along.

hustle and bustle –  A large amount of activity and work, usually in a noisy surrounding.

Another Similar Cue Card

Speak about a rule that you don’t like.

  • What is/was that rule?
  • When and Where do/did you follow it?
  • Why don’t/didn’t you like this rule?

And do/did other people like the rule? Why?

SAMPLE ANSWER Two-

Rules are the formal manners of the Norms and Mores, which are prevalent in every culture and society, all over the globe. They are considered to be essential in maintaining order and stability in a society, for bringing the suitable organization within behaviour of the people. Rules generally attract punishments in case of their violation, therefore they have this inherent nature of compliance for the people. I used to study in a boarding school and boarding school is usually stuffed with the rules to impose right discipline in students. Although we had a strict schedule for everyday, which we had to adhere to, but there was this, one fundamental rule for our sports, which I used to detest a lot. It was to follow and play only a one particular game throughout your schooling.

Well, every new entrant in our school had to choose one particular game out of the many. Thereafter, he needed to build his skills and proficiencies in that game only, playing every day for 3 hours at least. I chose hockey when I joined and I started enjoying it too. But sometimes, after hearing about the popular shots or kicks in cricket or football, or sometimes, due to the feel of jumping in the swimming pool in scorching heat of summers; I thought of changing my game. But, it was a rule to stick to just one game. And, even if you spot out your reasonable reasons in front of the coaches, it used to be such a tedious process of applications, and finally, after that only a few used to have that privilege of changing the game and those too, with another stricter unmodifiable rule of never being allowed to change the game twice. So, many students used to drop the idea of changing the game, even for the first time.

Yes, there were a few chaps who used to stick to one game with interest. Actually, like every rule, this rule had the benefits of properly honing your skills at one proficiency; and it was reasonable too, that by playing one game for your schooling years, one becomes a player who can bring laurels for the school in sports championships. And later too, that sports talent can reap great benefits in one’s career. Therefore, many students used to like the imposingness posed by that specific rule.

STRONG WORDS
Word Meaning
Scorching harsh: Military personnel undergo a scorching physical training session.
Tedious tiresome: For older people, solving puzzles is a tedious process, which is fun for kids.
Follow-up Questions

Q. 1 Do you like rules, in general? State the reason too.

Sample answer: Well, I may not like all the rules out there but I know that they are there for the good only. For instance, I like riding a bike without helmet with winds soaring through my head, but the rule instructs us to always wear a helmet while driving. Now, this rule, even if I don’t like it, is for my good only.

Q. 2 Do you consider that some existing rules are irrational? Why?

Sample answer: Yes, I do consider that some rules are totally illogical and irrational. For instance, on the same example we discussed in the last answer, about helmets. Sikhs in our country are allowed to drive without helmet. That is understandable, considering the massive size of their turbans. But imagine, just out of charity, this privilege was extended to their women too, as it looks odd that husband is driving without helmet while wife is sitting along with a helmet over her head. For the sake of this odd look, we gave this relaxation to Sikh women, compromising on our safety and security. Similarly, there are other such instances too, which can be easily observed in our day to day lives.

Q. 3 Do you think the necessity of rules for children too?

Sample answer: See, we need to look at it from a different perspective in case of children. I think they need to be taught about rules by their parents and teachers as well. Children are full of innocence, imposition of rules on them will come with a heavy burden. Rather, they should be taught about the fundamentals of civic life and the requirements of discipline and rules in it. One should walk on the left of the road, is one such thing ,which we can teach to a child and which later on becomes a traffic rule for him, when he grows adult.

Sample Answer

I have been a studious child during my entire schooling. My interest in all the subjects was equal and I was a consistent performer as well. There was this one subject however, that always piqued my interest due to various reasons. The subject that I like the most is biotechnology. It was an elective subject that I chose in the eleventh and studied until twelfth grade.

I remember Mrs. Jaya teaching us biotechnology during both those years in high school. We were lucky to have her as our teacher as she was a great teacher and had a great way of teaching. She was a very lenient and jolly person who took our classes in a fun and interactive manner. I was fond of biology and biotechnology caught my fantasy and I really wanted to learn all that the subject had to offer.

She used to tell us fascinating stories and then relate them to the theory. Her discussions were highly detailed and explanatory, sometimes eliminating the need of referring to a textbook. She gave us ample amount of time to take notes while she drew extended diagrams to help us visualize the theory in a better manner. We could see her sitting in the staffroom, creating notes and collecting material in order to facilitate our learning. The way she gave individual attention to all the students, urged us to put more effort into our studies. I learned a lot about the human body, its working principles, and the biological cell structure at length, in a short amount of time.

I was able to grasp all the course material and excelled at all my tests. This is why I found biotechnology to be my favorite subject.

Sample Answer 1:

My school life was perhaps the golden period of my childhood, and I am thankful for the wonderful experience it was. My teachers were highly qualified people, who were great at what they did. I admire and respect them for the way she helped me shape my life. I would like to mention one teacher in particular, Mrs. Uma. She was our class teacher for the seventh grade and taught us computer science.

I remember Mrs. Uma teaching us computer science during those years in my school. We were lucky to have her as our teacher as she had a great way of teaching. She was a very humble and down to earth person who taught us in an interactive manner to make the subject enjoyable. We always paid attention in class and never felt bored as she used to carry out small games and narrate interesting incidents in between the class.

Sometimes, she used to cancel the class and take us out to the lawns and gave us important life lessons that helped us inculcate many moral values. She made a lot of effort, going out of the way to help us grasp the intricacies of the subject. The way she gave individual attention to all the students, urged us to put more effort into our studies. She was a patient listener and always asked the students to approach her for any sort of problems that we might face even apart from studies. I used to stay back after school to take extra classes from her and she dedicatedly used to help me with the studies. She is a very noble person and I thank her for having such a positive influence on me.

Sample Answer 2:

Teachers play a very important role in moulding the lives of a child. I consider myself lucky to get several good teachers throughout my academic years. One of the teachers was, Mr Swatantra Gupta. He was our English and social science teacher in class VII and taught us English in subsequent classes. He was a really good mentor and guided all of us in the right direction.

Initially, we thought that he does not know how to teach but later on, I realised that not only was his way of teaching unique, it was also effective. In the social science class, he used to make everyone stand up and speak out the lesson. We thought, maybe he is lazy enough not to speak for himself, but after few months we realised that it was because of him that our pronunciation and style of speaking had improved.

He used to particularly make me stand up and ask me to read the entire lesson. It was tiring but at the same time, very exciting. He even pushed to take part in different competitions and plays and suggested my name to the principal for the district debate competition.

I think it was his faith in me that I actually started working on my strengths and become more confident.
