WRITING TASK 2: WHY ARE CITIES BECOMING OVERCROWDED. Best IELTS Band7 Coaching in dehradun
Sample Answer

Urbanization has become a global phenomenon. Metropolises all over the world are witnessing a dramatic rise in their populations. In this essay, I will outline the reasons behind this situation and propose some solutions to tackle it.

The main cause is high levels of migration from the countryside to cities. In developed nations, rural industries, ranging from agriculture to food production and livestock breeding, have been automated. As a result, fewer people are required to manage farmland and farm animals. Many wealthy country dwellers often head towards vibrant cities for a change. In a sharp contrast, mass migration to urban conurbations in developing nations is fuelled by frequent crop failures, unemployment and poor rural infrastructure.

Furthermore, millions of countrymen lack access to basic facilities such as healthcare, education, entertainment and transport etc. They seek a secure livelihood and higher standard of living for themselves and their children. Undoubtedly, mega cities have a developed infrastructure and offer a wide range of educational and employment opportunities. All these features attract young aspirants and job seekers to cities.

The unfettered growth of urban population exerts an enormous pressure on the available resources in cities. It also causes problems like high property prices, poor sanitation, congestion and pollution etc. Therefore, effective measures must be taken to curb the influx of people. Firstly, governments should plan policies for the overall development of the countryside.  Secondly, the excessive dependence on farming should be reduced. For this, other employment opportunities must be generated in rural areas. This can be done by promoting traditional skills like pottery making, knitting, weaving and basketry etc. If people can make a decent living in the countryside, mass migration can be controlled.

To sum up, the causes of this trend are primarily to do with unemployment and underdeveloped facilities in the countryside. The best solution is to bridge the huge disparity between urban and rural areas.

IELTS Essay Sample Questions # Sleep Deprivation

People sleep less than before in many countries, causing sleep deprivation. Why do people sleep less? What effect does it have on individuals and society?

SAMPLE ANSWER

Sleeping patterns have drastically changed in the past semi-centennials. Increased work-load, competitiveness and the dramatically changing landscape has left many people awestruck and others tired. One day seems shorter, schedules are crammed and precious sleep hours are sacrificed – tossing, turning or working. This has led to sleep deprivation amongst individuals.

With sleep deprivation, more people are becoming stressed increasing the amount of anxiety, depression and sleeplessness among individuals. Medical directors at major universities have claimed economy as a major factor for losing sleep. There are many clocking more than average hours while there are others, left with no job at hand. In both scenarios, the stress is overwhelming.

Sleep Deprivation
Aside from financial anxieties, in just a decade, society has become more around-the clock and more complex. With the advent of the internet, cell-phones, we are increasingly becoming 24-7. People are able to be active at any time. This increased activeness has led to people ignoring their sleep patterns and working in odd hours as well.

Sleep-deprivation causes sleep loss- induced neuron behavioral effects which often go unrecognized. For example – attention deficiency disorders, problems in judgement and decision making, such as medical errors. Often the performance of employees is observed to decline in short term recall of working memory. Even further, any work requiring divergent thinking deteriorates with time for individuals.

Overall, the changing landscape of business and the coming of internet has changed the way people sleep often creating troubles, that go unseen. With large number of individuals competing to make a mark, the society in large has become workaholic, with times even causing performance degradation.

Undoubtedly, flexible working hours and home offices have changed the conventional job atmosphere. This essay is in agreement with the view that telecommuting is changing the traditional work environment.

In detail, to begin with, telecommuting refers to office workers spending working hours at home and using different means of electronic technology to communicate with the other employees. Undoubtedly, parents with young children, working mothers as well as single parent can be benefitted the most by this way of working. Work from home allows people to have more balanced life.
