I Have A Dream # Practice Reading

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: “We hold these truths to be self-evident (not needing to be demonstrated or explained; obvious.), that all men are created equal.”

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former (having previously been a particular thing) slaves ((especially in the past) a person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them) and the sons of former slave owners (a person who owns something) will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood (an association or community of people linked by a common interest, religion, or trade)…

… I have  a dream hat my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged (form an opinion or conclusion about) by the colour of their skin but by the content (a state of satisfaction) of their character,

I have a dream today!

The power of conviction (a formal declaration by the verdict of a jury or the decision of a judge in a court of law that someone is guilty of a criminal offence) that rings through Martin Luther King’s words cannot fail to bring tears to the eyes. And we understand why these words were so prophetic (accurately predicting what will happen in the future), so world-changing, in the wake of these words, the US Government passed the civil rights act and voting rights for the Africans-Americans in the mid-60s. At least in law, if not fully in spirit, Martin Luther King’s dream has come true.

Visionaries (a person with original ideas about what the future will or could be like)are dreamers of dreams. With narrowed (become or make more limited in extent or scope)eyes they look into the distant (far away in space or time) shore (the land along the edge of a sea, lake, or other large body of water)and see things that others cannot. Then like divers (to go below the surface of the water, as a submarine)who bring up pearls for our delectation (delight), they show us what they see. And by doing so, they take us to the next step.

  • One of the easiest way to stay healthy is by eating right. We often become what we eat and it is very important that we take care of what we eat. Eating a balanced diet i.e. having carbohydrates,fats, minerals, vitamins, roughage, water and proteins helps in the overall development of the individual and avoids any deficiency disease that might take place.
  • With more and more people becoming workaholic, it is very important that they do certain kind of physical exercise daily. This helps people to be away from the diseases the busy life style has given us and also reduce the stress away.
  • It is not only about physical fitness,we at present times need to be mentally fit as well. For this, we can do simple things, such as change the routine of doing things. For instance, change the way we brush or use a different hand to write or challenge oneself by reading harder things, may be an international magazine or a tough literature.
  • One can also reduce stress levels by solving puzzles and playing games of strategy. One might learn a new language or learn how to play a new instrument.
  • Awareness is very important. The best way to fight stress is to know what is causing you stress. If you are aware of it, chances are high that you can avoid them. For instance, if you know that traffic irritates you, avoid going out in time when traffic is busy.

Myths Regarding IELTS

With the increasing popularity of IELTS, the number of misconception regarding it has increased multiple bounds. THERE IS ONE CORRECT ANSWER IN SPEAKING SECTION
English is not about being right or wrong. It is about expressing yourself in a language that others can understand. So, you are not going to be judged on the basis of your opinions but rather on the following four aspects of your speaking –

  1. Fluency and coherence
  2. Lexical resource
  3. Grammatical Range and accuracy
  4. Pronunciation

So, if you are going about are cramming those sample answers, take a deep breathe and relax. You don’t get marks on how well you learn, but how well you express.

THE EXAMINER MUST AGREE WITH YOU
Well, we all are individuals. While answering, it is possible that the examiner does not agrees with your opinion, but this does not means that they will cut your marks. The examiner could personally disagree with every opinion you have and you can still get a band score of 9. You are being judged on your way of speaking and not on whether you are able to convince examiner. So, don’t worry about the examiner’s opinions or feelings.

IELTS make sure that the test takes place in fair environment. All testing centers have the same standards and mark you with the same criteria. Every examiner undergoes strict training, and they know that there work gets checked. So, don’t worry about the place and work hard on improving your English.
LEARNING HIGH VOCABULARY WORDS WILL GET ME BAND 9
Vocabulary is an important part of IELTS and one surely gets good marks for using high end vocabulary words. But this does not mean that you will go on and put complex words unnecessarily to impress the examiner. If you do this it looks unnatural and your coherence and cohesion suffers. You obviously need to display a wide range of vocabulary but you should do this appropriately.

There are many other myths, like you can’t ask the examiner in the speaking section to repeat the question or you need to have a particular accent. So, stop thinking about these myths and start working truly on your dreams and score high in IELTS.
