Sample Answer:

In a way, almost all jobs are meant for making a livelihood, raising a family or fulfilling someone’s dream. Saying that a given profession is better than the other seems quite unfair to me. Certainly, a lot of factors like interest, knowledge, skills and circumstances drive people towards a career. In fact, multiple careers are becoming increasingly popular these days.

Personally, I wouldn’t like to work in a Business Process Outsourcing, commonly known as BPO. It is a business practice in which big companies sign contracts with smaller organizations for providing specific services to its customers. Attending phone calls of the customers for solving service-related problems or lodging a complaint is one of the most common types of services offered by the majority of BPOs.

A minimum level of education required for working in a BPO is not very high, even high school graduates can also be accepted. But, excellent verbal communication skills in English are a must for anyone who wishes to be a part of any BPO. Patience is another important trait required for working efficiently in this sector.

The main reason why I don’t wish to join a BPO is that receiving phone calls from irate customers is an integral part of the job. Callers won’t listen to you. They have the liberty of using any kind of abusive language and we’ve to follow a strict code of conduct and remain calm. On top of that, they expect an immediate remedy to their issues. No matter how trained/skilled we are, after a while frustration takes over. In my view, this kind of job can lead to mental health problems and also degrade the quality of one’s personal life. I know many people who left their BPO jobs because of the high-stress levels they experienced on a day-to-day basis.

To sum up, like every other work, this job has its own pros and cons. A little change in customers’ attitude towards service providers can make BPOs a desirable workplace, but I doubt this would ever happen.

IELTS Speaking Part-3, Follow-up questions about jobs

Q1 What is your dream job?

Answer: I wish to become a computer engineer. Computer science and engineering has infiltrated into every aspect of our life. Right from our day-to-day communication to the most advanced space missions, every single field encompasses devices and software designed by computer engineers. I wish to be a part of this progression.

Q2 What factors do people take into consideration while choosing a job?

Answer: Based on what I’ve observed so far I can say that salary and growth opportunities are generally considered as the major decisive factors in finalizing a job. This is particularly true for skilled individuals like managers and computer professionals. Given the high rate of unemployment, sometimes people apply for odd jobs which are not at all related to their educational qualifications or skills. Altogether, being selective or ready to accept anything that is offered has a lot to do with our circumstances.

Q3 Is job satisfaction important? Why?

Answer: Yes, certainly it is. Most people spend a large part of their life in working for an organization. A high level of job satisfaction has a positive effect on people’s well-being and their overall productivity. Aristotle‘s quotation would be ideal for this situation – ‘Pleasure in the job puts perfection in the work’.

Q4 What skills do you think are needed to get a good job these days?

Answer: I’d like to emphasize that each profession has its own skill requirements. Nevertheless, given the fact that English has become a lingua franca, good communication skills in English have become a must for almost all types of well-paid jobs. Apart from this, I think, effective computing skills can be very helpful in distinguishing our profile from others.

Q5 Do you think women should be able to do all the same jobs that men do?

Answer Both males and females are the creation of god. In my view, both genders are equally able to do any kind of jobs. The existing system of male or female dominated occupations is not a new phenomenon; it’s been happening for centuries. Fortunately, the situation is changing now and women are proving their true potential in all fields.

IELTS Cue Card The first time you saw an interesting bird

Sample Answer

Today I am going to narrate a particularly vivid memory about a flock of parrots.

I was around 12 years old at the time. My family and I had just moved back from Europe to India. This was a large shift for me as I had spent the majority of my little lifetime abroad and knew precious little about my home country.

It was my first day of school, assembly period to be more precise. The school held its assembly in the open-air amphitheatre. I had just been told to stand in line with what I presumed was my new class. Everyone had their heads bowed at prayer time and I was trying my very best to blend in as inconspicuously as possible. As the national anthem started up, everyone stood at attention, this was again, a very foreign concept to me, but I copied them all the same.

Just as I raised my head, I recall being quite shocked to see a flock of brightly coloured parrots zoom over my head. I was in awe at the time, I couldn’t believe that such exotic birds could just roam free in such natural abundance. For you see, back in Germany, parrots could not even be found in zoos! The ecosystem and bird species were poles apart. While jays, magpies, longspurs and pipits are a common sight in the north-west, here in the south we have pheasants, peacocks and parrots. For a twelve-year-old, you might just as well have shown me saber tooth tigers; I was that blown away.

What’s more, later that day when I was walking home, I spotted an old man feeding some parrots by hand! As if this was a common sight. Those two events left a memorable impression on me, for I had learned first-hand how different the world was around the globe, and what was peculiar in one part, might be a common tale in others. The parrots that I saw that day, symbolized that thought for me. That is why, even today, parrots are more beautiful and exotic and interesting to me, than they would be to most locals.

IELTS Speaking cue card: A goal you achieved

IELTS Speaking Cue Card: A goal you achieved

Describe a goal you achieved which was set by yourself. You should say

  • What the goal was
  • When you set it
  • Why you set it
  • And explain what you did to achieve the goal.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Goals play an indispensable role in our life. Here, I’d like to talk about a time when I set the goal of reducing my social media usage.

In general, I’m not very active on Facebook, Instragram and other social platforms. But, last year during winter vacations I started spending a considerable amount of time on Facebook. Long discussions with friends about the latest Hollywood movies, reality shows and celebrities became a daily routine.

Initially, it was full of fun and I didn’t think that it could affect my studies. Within 4 weeks, however, the whole situation changed. My performance in the preliminary exams conducted after the holidays was very poor. I failed in 2 subjects: physics and mathematics.

The reason was obvious to me. The holidays that were meant for final exam preparation were wasted in social networking and chats. Certainly, if I’d studied hard, this wouldn’t have happened. On the way to home, a big dilemma prevailed over me: Should I show the report card to my parents or not? Despite knowing that it was wrong, I chose to hide the result. Had they seen it, they would’ve been very disappointed. That day I set the goal of decreasing my social media time and study well.

To achieve my goal, the first thing I did was to deactivate my Facebook account temporarily. Setting up a timetable was the next phase of the plan. For months together, I chased the lost time. In the end, the outcome was positive – I passed the final exams with excellent grades. Even though it may seem small, it was a big goal for a 14-year-old high school student. At last, I decided to show the hidden report card to my parents along with the final report card. They seemed to be proud that I’d noticed my own faults and worked upon them, but they also stressed that they were my parents for a reason and I ought to come to them when such a mistake occurs.

SAMPLE ANSWER

India is densely populated, so if we are stepping out of our homes we hardly find a place which is not crowded. I normally avoid visiting overcrowded places.

Recently a Shopping Complex was inaugurated in my hometown. It is situated on the outskirts. A lot of advertisements appeared in the local newspaper to promote it. One weekend I decided to visit the Shopping Complex with my friend. It was Sunday and we planned to go there in the afternoon. We reached the Complex around 3 p.m. I was in the mood of shopping clothes so we headed towards a clothes store inside the Complex. Both of us selected few garments and went towards the trial room to try the outfits.

Surprisingly, there was a long queue outside the trial room. I found it really funny.  My friend and I started giggling about it while waiting for our turn. After waiting for about 15 minutes we were able to try our clothes. Both of us selected a dress each and went towards the billing counter to make payment. On finding a queue there I started laughing again and nudged my friend while waiting for our turn.

As soon as we paid our bills we rushed towards the Food Court as we were quite hungry. It was 5 pm already and the Food Court too was packed with people. With great difficulty we managed to buy burgers and fries for ourselves. While we were eating, the crowd kept on increasing.

We quickly finished our meal as I started feeling suffocated. I rushed out of the Complex gasping for fresh air.

That day, I decided I won’t visit this Complex on a Sunday ever again.
