IELTS Speaking Sample Answer # Media Impact

Media plays a very important role in our lives, in today’s world. There is so much that is happening in the world and we can get to know exactly what we want to, in a fraction of second. From newspapers, to television and now internet, media has made our lives easier and at the same time difficult. Let us today, have a look at some of the questions related to media.

Where do most people in your country get their news?

Newspapers and television are the most common media for getting news. People who seriously like to know what is going on in the world tend to go for these sources. However, presently, social media also has come in fore front in sharing the news. One can now find, post being done on social media sites. These post can be made either by the news channels or individuals.
Does the media in your country report the whole truth, mostly truth, or mostly lies?

I think for the most part it tries to portray the truth to the citizens but the problem is that the media also does not knows the entire truth and they show the only view of the entire story making it look like lie. But, then there are even times when in my opinion, media tends to make up stories just to gain TRP rating and earn money.
How has the internet changed the news in your country?

Definitely yes, internet has surely brought about a big change in the news sector of our country. Unlike earlier, when only certain section of time was allocated for the news, with internet everyone can get to know the news in just a click, making it difficult to make news and in the rush of making news, news channels and websites tend to put more of made up stories.
Who has the most control over the media in your country?

Media is a free entity in our country, with no one to control them. However, it is often said that media gets indirectly influenced by foreigners, especially Americans. With the media, trying to imitate the style of English men, we are more likely to loose our individuality.

How does the media help create a healthy society?

Media is a powerful thing. Be it creating awareness or showing things as they are, media tends to make an impact on people. We are more likely to get affected by a video about rape than someone telling the issues. It is with the help of media that people can be told about the issues that the country is facing and explaining how they can be solved. With media, a broader group can be touched upon.
Should the media just report the facts or should the media interpret the facts?

I think it should just report the facts, because that is what it is meant for. Telling stories happening as they are. It should then leave upon the individuals to interpret things, because every person has their own point of view and forcing an opinion might take away the different ways in which a problem can be seen/
Can you think of a politician who used the media in a successful way?

Our country has a live example of our current Prime Minister, Narendra Modi who used media to get in touch with the people of our country. It was through his numerous talk shows that he did, and the speeches he gave that people started realizing his potential and got to know his plans. Even after winning the elections, he has made sure that he is in touch with the country men through various social media platforms.
Should the media show graphic violence? Why or why not?

I think graphic violence should not be shown in  media because it creates a lot of negativity in the air. Showing violence 24/7 can affect the way people think, bringing in the feelings of violence home. Also, it has been observed, that people who see violence more are more likely to be violent.
What is the most fair and balanced media outlet in your country?

Our country has many media outlets, but the few that I have written, I think “The Hindu” is one of the most fair and balanced media outlet. It tries to cover the news of entire nation showing only the details of big happenings in the country as well as internationally. Once you read the Hindu, you get to know about everything important happening in the world. Every word written on the newspaper is important.

IELTS Speaking Sample Answer # Music Lovers

Music is that one thing that binds so many of us. We all have our favorite stars, the ones we can connect to, the lyrics we speak out loud as if speaking our hearts out. There are so many songs that we say describe us or our situation. In short, we are so much in love with music, that rarely one can be found with no songs in the mobile phone. Today, let us have a look at some of the questions related to music.

Who are your favorite bands or artists?

Oh! There are so many of the artist and bands that I love listening to. My favorite being one direction. Other than them, I even enjoy listening to Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Mohit Chauhan, AR Rehman, to name a few.

How often do you listen to music?

Very often. I need music while I go for jogging in the morning. It gives me the strength and the pump to keep going when I feel tired. Apart from that, I even listen to music when either I am feeling low or sometimes just because I want to dance my heart out.

When was the last time you bought a song or album?

I have never bought any song or album since, I think, 2002. Back then, when there was no internet it was so much common to buy a album or a cassette for songs. With the coming of internet, it is all about downloading the song and enjoying it.

Do you usually buy albums online or CD’s from the store?

Well, for most part I love going to the store when I buy a CD. Buying from a store, I think is much more fun than buying online. I know that sometimes there are lot of discounts available online but it is the joy of searching through lot of CD’s and then asking people around for reviews and then bringing along friends, that make buying CD’s fun.

Have you ever illegally downloaded music?

I don’t remember ever illegally downloading music, but I am not very sure because as a child one is not bothered much about piracy. The only thing that matters is that one should get their favorite song. However, now I make sure that if I am listening to a song, I give due credit to the singer by not downloading it illegally.

Do you think it is okay or not okay to download music illegally?

In my opinion, definitely yes, downloading music illegally is not a right thing to do. It is because when a musician sings a song, there is so much more involved than mere singing the song. One has to first write it down and then edit it and then sing it all so that it makes sense to people. Having worked so hard, if the musician does not gets his/her fare due, I think there is no point in talking about equality and fare justice.

What kind of music do you listen to when you want to dance?

Most of times I listen to lyrical music i.e. something that makes sense to me and something that I can connect to. Even more, it should be loud and pumpy because it is only then that there seems a sense of dancing my heart out at it. Slow songs are surely not my type when dancing.

What kind of music do you listen to when you are sad?

Anything that can either make me cry and forget about it all or something that makes me happy and forget about it all. I listen to music to forget the sadness and live life as it comes. So, one can find me listening to songs that fit into the situation well and can make me feel better.0

Is there a certain song or type of music that makes you really energetic?

There are few songs that I really love and do make me feel energetic. But, they are temporary. Most of the times the songs change, but for most part, it is the pop music that makes me feel dancing and jumping and singing my heart out.

Do you think music is getting better or worse?

I think music is changing, there is no point in comparing music with what it was may be ten years back or twenty years back. Every era has its own taste and it might be very much possible that the taste has changed over time.

What kind of music will your kids listen to?

I am not very sure of that, but I think it will be more of trans or remix. Also, with the international market expanding, I think my kids will have a know how about music from entire world.

How do you feel about your country’s traditional music?

I think my country’s traditional music is great as it reminds one of the roots of the country. It talks about the history and shows us how the country has evolved over time. I do really love listening to the traditional music of my country.

IELTS Speaking Sample Questions # Idol Worship

There are people in the world you do great things and achieve so much success. These are the people who are thought to be the change makers, the ones who are stars of their fields. Although, they are individuals with extremely successful careers, often people tend to worship them. Some people believe that they are simply successful individuals, while many others tend to worship them.

Who are the most popular singers or groups in your country?

India has some legendary singers to its bucket list. There is Lata Mangeshkar who is thought to be the nightingale of our country. Then, we have A.R Rehman, also Sonu Nigam, Asha Bhosle, Mohit Chauhan are some of the reigning superstars of our country. From the past, we had some great singers like, Mukesh, Kishore, Rafi. These were the singers who are thought to be great at what they do.

What are some crazy examples of fan worship you have heard of?

India being such a vast country, there is so much that you hear, all of that being so unique. There are temples in South India for superstars like Rajnikanth, Amitabh Bachchan and others. Even pundits go to these film stars home to  get prashad for the worshippers. There have been cases when people have modified their appearances to such an extent when they start looking like their film stars. People have even gone out to propose their favorite stars and so much more.

How far is too far when talking about fan worship?

I think when fans start interfering into the personal life of  their superstars, that is when it becomes too far. When they start believing that they own a particular superstar, it becomes irritating. There have been cases when people have gone out of their way too much just for a star. For example, recently in our country Anushka Sharma was shamed a lot because of his connection with Virat Kohli and Virat’s poor performance. People linked the two and caused rift in the pair’s personal relation. This I think was too far.
idol worship

Is there any particular band that you are huge fan of?

Oh, Yes! I am in love with One Direction. I think they sing superb and the music and the beats it is so great that just listening to their song once is not enough. The videos are good and the meaning of their songs is even more beautiful.

What were some of the groups that you really loved when you were younger?

When I was young, I remember following Pussycat dolls a lot. I really did liked their songs. Some of them like, When I grow up. This was the song that I used to hear a lot and would imagine myself doing all of these things said in the lyrics.

Who do you think promotes superstars?

I think superstars never promote themselves on their own. They have their marketing teams and all of those academicians out there to help them. From the very basics to the things that they like, everything is put out in such a manner as if they are trying to sell the superstar and it does help. The more brand image a superstar carries, more are the chances of them being successful.

Do you think superstars should be given the importance they are being showered with?

Superstars are doing a great job entertaining people, be it in the field of music or films. But, in my opinion, they are given much more importance than they deserve. There are so many others  who do deserve the respect and the fame superstars are given. For example, we have our soldiers who are doing a great job, helping our country and the people live a peaceful life. And then there are so many other sportsmen who are not given the due respect even thought they outshine themselves at the world stage.

Why do you think certain entertainers live such a long life of success while others tend to lose it quickly?

In my opinion, it is more about consistent hard work. There are people who even after gaining success are constantly improving themselves and these are the ones who tend to stay successful for long time. The ones who stop practicing after gaining a short stint at success tend to fall out.

Who is your favorite superstar and why?

My favorite has to be Priyanka Chopra. I admire her more than any one else out there. She has been a great model, great actress, singer and such a philanthropist. All of that on her own. There were times in our country when women were not respected as much in terms of money and the job that they take. But, this girl went out and changed the way things are there. She has worked with some great artists and yet maintained her own identity.

Do children learn bad habits at school or at home?

I think they can learn bad habits anywhere. It could be home or school, completely depends on what sort of environment they are getting. But, what is important is that either of the place, there are people who can pull them back to being a better person.

Do you cut people off in the middle of their stories and conversations?

No, I don’t tend to do it. But, yes I do ask questions in between stories. It is not always that I simply listen to what they are saying, it is a conversation, where even I am speaking and questioning.

Is it easy or difficult to get rid of a bad habit?

I think definitely it is. Habits are something one forms over a long period of time and banishing them does take time. Because, it becomes part of the characteristic of the individual. But, if one has the determination to do it, nothing can come in between.

Do other people’s bad habits get on your nerves?

Not most of the times, but yes some things tend to irritate me. Like, there are some people who themselves are non vegetarian and try to force it on others and it becomes irritating, especially when you are out on dinner with a group of friends. Sometimes even alcohol gets on my nerves. People tend to do horrific things when they are drunk, some fall down, some slap each other, some misbehave with their family members. These things do irritate me.

Have you been successful in getting rid of a bad habit?

Oh! yes. Long time back I was a TV and a tea addict. I used to watch tv for most of the part and drink so much of tea. But, then for some reasons, I just felt I should quit and I did quit both of them. Although quitting tea was easier for me, tv is something still to be conquered completely.

Is always coming late a bad habit?

I suppose it is, because it tends to bother people who are involved along with you. So, for example if you are late for a meeting, people might get bothered because of you. And, if this happens over a long period of time, people start ignoring your point of view.

What bad habits bother you the most?

Untidiness, food habits and over drinking tends to bother me. Untidiness because I cannot live in a stinky room. Yes, I am not the one who keeps things very orderly but there should be some degree of tidiness in a room or in the way someone keeps things. Also, bad food habits irritate me. There are people who spill food out, chew loudly and then talk when their mouth is full.

What good habits do you most admire?

I really like people who get up early and do exercise. It gives me a feeling that they are motivated towards leading a great life. Also, I love people who share things. I think sharing is a really great deed and people who can do that, even when they have so nimble, is a great thing.

habits

What unusual habits do you observe in your family members? Do they bother you?

My family is full of weird yet lovely people. We all have so many unusual habits. Like my mother, she is obsessed with her plants and take care of them like her own children. You cannot harm them in any way. She would go about watering them and then giving them manure and making sure everything is fine. And then there is my father. He is one of those people who is the most planned unplanned person. So, most of the times he would just inform us he is going a km here or there but then later on would tell us about the exciting places he has gone nearby, like 20-60 km here and there.
