A person who took a decision for you

Sample answer

Decisions are an integral part of everyone’s life. Sometimes we rely on others for making a decision. Today, I’m going to talk about one such time.

I’m a final year student of Bachelor of Technology at Delhi University. Thanks to its outstanding teaching methods, my university has an excellent reputation among employers. Every year many renowned companies conduct campus interviews in the University for recruiting fresh graduates. Right from their freshman year, students look forward to these interviews and being placed in their dream jobs.

In last month’s campus interviews, I did really well. I was hoping to be selected by at least one company. To my surprise, I received two offer letters, one from Wipro, an Indian IT Company and the other from Siemens, a German Company. I was puzzled. I didn’t know what to do. So, I decided to discuss the matter with my dad. He has more than 20 years’ experience in the real employment world of information technology.

We had a long healthy discussion. He explained the pros and cons of working in Indian and foreign organizations. In the end, he suggested me to join Siemens. In a way, he took this decision for me, but I wouldn’t say that he forced me to accept his judgement. It was my firm faith in his ability and vision which inspired me to follow his words.

IELTS Speaking # Describe someone who learned a foreign language?

IELTS Speaking Task Cue Card

Describe someone who learned a foreign language?

  • Who this person is?
  • Which language did he/she learn?
  • How did he/she learn it?

And explain what you think about this language and its benefits.

Sample Answer

In this swiftly advancing time, being bilingual or multilingual has become mandatory. Someone who just knows their mother tongue faces a lot of challenges mainly in their professional lives. This cue card topic brings to my mind a colleague who learned French in order to get better placement opportunities abroad. I remember making fun of him for joining an Institute to learn a foreign language. It was later when a job preferred candidates who were multilingual that I realized the significance of learning a second language.

Apart from English, French is a widely used language for international communication. My friend, Saumya received an offer letter of a multinational company in Canada and learning French proved an asset for her career.

Learning a new language enriches the mind and helps us interact with foreign natives, both personally and professionally. Recently at a wedding ceremony, I met Saumya and she told me about her professional achievements after learning a foreign language. I was surprised to look at her talking over the phone so fluently in French to her work colleagues back in Canada. She even told me about her plan to learn Spanish in the near future.

From my point of view, being multilingual is really beneficial when it comes to our future. Taking Saumya’s example, she got the opportunity to travel across the world and attend international conferences mainly because of her command over a second language. I personally admire the French people mainly for eloquence with which they speak, the sophistication with which they carry themselves and a sense of nobility that they possess. Being an internationally recognized language, French has numerous advantages. More importantly, not only French but learning any second language will always be fruitful.

DIFFICULT WORDS-

  • Bilingual– speaking two languages fluently
  • Multilingual– able to use several languages especially with equal fluency.
  • Eloquence– fluent or persuasive speaking or writing
  • Asset– a useful or valuable thing or person

Sample answer

Today I am going to speak about a place where I went on holidays.

The name of the place is Manali. It’s a picturesque hill station located in Himachal Pradesh, a state in northern India.

I went to Manali last week with my family. Since it is quite far, approximately 500 kilometers, from my hometown Dehradun, we decided to set off on Friday night. It was a very long drive, about 12 hours. We reached there on Saturday morning.

Manali has a lot to offer to its tourists of all ages. For the elderly and religious people, there are many ancient temples. Young adventure seekers have a wide range of sporting activities like skiing, snowmobiling, rafting, river crossing, trekking and paragliding etc. at their disposal.

On the first day of our holiday, we trekked through a dense cedar forest to reach Hadimba temple. It is the oldest temple of Manali and has a lot of religious significance in the local community. The next day we went to Solang Valley. Fortunately, we found plenty of snow in the valley. Without wasting our time, we made a small but very pretty igloo. We took the photographs of all the places we visited.

This place has impressed me very much. The main reason is its pleasant weather. Apart from that, people are honest, friendly and co-operative. They always give you the right information. Transport facilities and hotels are also well-maintained.

Sample Answer

I love travelling and visiting unexplored places. Today, I’m going to talk about a place that is not visited by many tourists.

The name of the place is Ladakh which means land of high passes. It’s a mountainous region in Jammu and Kashmir State of India. I went to Ladakh last year with my friends.

Ladakh has a lot to offer to its tourists. It’s known for its unparalleled beauty. Arid mountains, exotic lakes and mighty rives can leave visitors mesmerized. We stayed there for a week and every day was packed with lots of activities. My friends and I did rafting in the Indus River. We tried mountain climbing too but found it quite challenging. We visited some monasteries as well. Overall, the whole stay became a memorable experience for all of us.

Even though Ladakh is a marvellous place to visit, sadly, the number of tourists is quite low. The main region behind this is its location. Jammu and Kashmir is a disputed state which is terribly affected by terrorism and other host of problems. Safety becomes a major issue for visitors. Only adventurous and thrill seekers dare to go there. Another key reason is that the government doesn’t promote tourism in this area. People have to pay a lot of money for accommodation and other facilities. All these factors certainly affect people’s decision when it comes to visiting a new place.
