Grammar Tips for IELTS Preparation
***** GRAMMAR TIPS *****
In both the IELTS Speaking and the IELTS Writing test, grammar is part of the marking criteria. Poor grammar means only one thing – a lower score. Ironically, making mistakes with more complex structures won’t harm you as much as making errors with more simple grammar structures.
Present Simple and Past Simple are often not so “simple” in languages other than English, and often “L1 Interference” takes place. That’s when you speak English, but using the grammar of your native language.
For example, in many languages verbs don’t change to indicate time – sentences simply end “today”, “yesterday” or “tomorrow”. Many IELTS candidates who speak such languages automatically do this in English. So, “I went to the market” becomes “I go to the market yesterday”.

What is Writing task ?
Writing task
What is being tested is your ability to:
• objectively describe the information given to you
• compare and contrast
• report on an impersonal topic without the use of opinion
• use the language of graph description
Selecting information
In completing this task it is important that you describe the whole graph fully. However, this does not mean that you should note every detail. In most cases there will be too much information for you to mention each figure. You will therefore need to summarise the graph in meaningful segments, as we saw in the section on single line graphs.
Report structure
Like the single line graph, your report should be structured simply with an introduction, body and conclusion. Tenses should be used appropriately.
Use two standard opening sentences to introduce the graph and your report. These opening sentences should make up the first paragraph. Sentence one should define what the graph is about, that is the date, location, what is being described in the graph etc.

Writing Test Task 2
*** WRITING TEST TASK 2 ***
There are a number of standard “phrases” required when writing a “Task Two” essay for the IELTS Writing Test, and candidates often use these incorrectly.
For example, when introducing an opinion people often write, “In my opinion”, which is, of course, correct. But this introductory phase often gets written as “In my idea” or even “In my thinking”, which are far from correct.
Aside from this, candidates often get mixed up and use incorrect word forms (for example, a noun rather than a verb, etc.) in their sentences.
