IELTS Speaking # Meeting People
There are so many people that you meet in life. Some of them you stick around with, others you lose in the journey of life. No matter what there are so many memories that we make with them and enjoy them for our entire lives. Let us today have a look at some of the questions related to meeting people.
Do you enjoy meeting new people?
Yes, there is so much of excitement when you meet new people, because they have so new stories to tell. Different cultures, different language, different opinion, yet we both make attempts to know each other. There is a sort of novelty that comes to me, every time I meet someone new.
What are some good things to ask someone you just met?
I think if you could just ask how they are and how was their day. If they did something exciting or may be something very dull. We can talk about colors, the company or the place where we meet, about some new technology or may be rather anything that does not have chances of having an argument because you have just met and it is always better to first know each other and get comfortable in each others company.
What are some things you shouldn’t ask people you just met?
There are certain things which are surely a big NO NO when you meet a person for the first time or may be in the early of meetings. One is age, then salary, the price of the clothes they are wearing or things related to health. One should not talk about politics or for that matter any sensitive information should be avoided.
Is it OK to ask a person’s age in your country?
Yes it is. There is nothing offensive about people asking age in my country but that is only till the person is a student. As people grow up and start working, it is not something one should do.
Are you nervous when you are introduced to someone new?
Sometimes yes, I do get nervous if that someone new is very senior to me, because then there are so many other things as well going in the head. But, when the introduction is with my peer, I tend to be very jovial and enthusiastic to meet the other person.
What are some ways to overcome being nervous about meeting new people?
The best way to practice the conversation before it even starts. So, when you have talked with that person in personal many times, when you interact with them in real, it might be the first for the world but it is not for you. So, you are able to confidently interact with them.
About how many new people do you meet a week?
There are lot of them that I meet. There is this club that I am associated with and then there is my workplace. Apart from them, I go out to play badminton so there are again many people that I get to meet.
Where are some good places to meet people?
I think the best place to meet new people is in clubs or groups where you can find like-minded people. Also, you can meet people in cafeterias where there are so many people who are sitting alone. One can even meet people in the break rooms where lot of people come to take breaks.
How important are first impressions to you?
Not very, because I think there is so much beyond the first impression. Sometimes it might be possible that you were not able to see the real person the first time so you need to meet them again. Or, may be the first time you met either of you, over reacted. I simply don’t understand how can one get to know the entire story of an individual in just one talk.
What do you do if you forget the name of someone you’ve just been introduced to?
I tend to say sorry and ask their name because it is so weird that you don’t remember the name and still are having a conversation. I find it better when I know the name of the person with whom I am about to have a conversation. So, I ask them and repeat the name again to make sure I do remember the name the next time.
