Writing Test Task 2
*** WRITING TEST TASK 2 ***
There are a number of standard “phrases” required when writing a “Task Two” essay for the IELTS Writing Test, and candidates often use these incorrectly.
For example, when introducing an opinion people often write, “In my opinion”, which is, of course, correct. But this introductory phase often gets written as “In my idea” or even “In my thinking”, which are far from correct.
Aside from this, candidates often get mixed up and use incorrect word forms (for example, a noun rather than a verb, etc.) in their sentences.

Common Mistakes in Writing Task 2
Common Mistakes in Writing Task 2
Below are some extremely common mistakes made by candidates in their Writing Task 2 essays. Can you correct them?
1. In the present time
2. Due to globalization, we have western products in my country.
3. There are many problems in the social
4. The traffic is very jam
5. There are many drug addicted
Answers:
1. Should be ‘at present’.
2. ‘Due to’ cannot go at the beginning of a sentence – it should be: ‘We have western products in my country, due to globalisation’.
3. ‘Social’ is an adjective – should be: ‘society’ (n).
4. ‘Jam’ or ‘traffic jam’ are nouns – here you need an adjective to describe the traffic, so it should be: ‘The traffic is very jammed’… although nobody ever says that – just try ‘the traffic is bad’ or something similar.
5. ‘Addicted’ is an adjective – should be: ‘drug-addicts’ (n)

LISTENING TIPS
LISTENING TIPS
1. If you don’t catch the answer to a question, it’s natural to think hard to try to remember the answer. If you do this, you will miss parts of the tape and possibly won’t be able to answer other questions. When you miss the answer to a question, forget it – go onto the next question. Remember – you only listen to the tape once. The answer might be repeated on the tape anyway.
2. If you miss the answer to two or three questions, again, miss them out – you won’t be able to remember the answers.
3. If you get to the stage where you are totally lost, you may have to wait until the other candidates turn their pages before you can find out where you are in the questions. Of course, this is not ideal but if you have to do this, don’t panic – if you panic you will have even bigger problems.

Last Minute Tips For The Writing Test
Last minute tips for the Writing Test.
• Make sure you organise your time carefully during the hour-long Writing Test. Stick to the following suggested timing:
Task 1 – 20 minutes
Task 2 – 40 minutes
Remember that Task 2 is worth two-thirds of the total marks in the Writing Test. So don’t do what some people have done in the past; spend so long on Task 1 that you have insufficient time for Task 2.
