IELTS Cue Card, A SONG YOU LIKE

Music is a form of art which has been a key component of celebrations in both ancient and modern times. Other than being a source of entertainment, it has profound impact on our brain too. Music is like a food for the brain, soothing and relaxing us even on a bad day. This time we are looking at a cue card that asks questions about a song you like.

Describe a song that you like. You should say:

  • What the song is?
  • Where you first heard it?
  • What kind of song it is?

And explain why you like it.

Sample Answer

Music is something that we all can associate with, although our choices can be different at different times. There are times when I like to listen to soft music, while at others I enjoy rock or peppy music. Today, I’d like to talk about a song that remains one of my favorites since I heard it around 20 years back. The name of that song is “Heal the World” by Michael Jackson. The song is from his album “dangerous”, which was released way back in 1982. In one of his interviews, Jackson said that this was the song that he was most proud to have created. He also formed a charitable organization by the same name, designed to improve the lives of children all over the world.
This song is has meaningful and soulful lyrics, talking about unity, peace and equality. It says that we should treat each other equally and put an end to discrimination based on color and religion. Let us make this world a better place to live by spreading love and not hate. It guides us to be considerate towards those who are less fortunate and feed those who are hungry. I still remember the music video of this song which features children living in different countries suffering from unrest, poverty and hunger. It is also one of only a handful of Michael Jackson’s videos not to feature Jackson himself. I’ll wrap up by saying that it is a beautiful song carrying a message to make this world worth living.

Ans. I just can’t imagine life without music- no singing, tapes or music, no dancing, no hymns and concerts. Without music our world would certainly be a bleak place. Life would be extremely dull, boring and will lose its vibrancy.

Ans. Although, I do watch television regularly, I could probably do without it if asked to choose between TV and music. Music is definitely indispensable in my life. Music is something I can hear exclusively or read, do households etc. while playing it in the background.

Q3. What is the best time and place to listen to music?
Ans. I feel that the beauty of music is that it can be always heard. However, work meeting would be an inappropriate place to listen to music. Also, I feel that you can really enjoy music if you are in the company of your friends. You can dance and groove while chit chatting with them.

Music forms a crucial element of our wellbeing. It is a part of the nature and universe as a whole. Wind, Rains, Thunder, birds and so many other things have their unique music characteristics. We, humans also have discovered art and music to add beauty to our lives. Different songs are composed on different genre of music and this variety is played in different contexts of moods and occasions. I admire one of these Hindi songs which says “yeh daulat bhi le lo “. It is composed in form of ghazal.

This was sung by legendary Jagjit Singh, who is considered as maestro of ghazals. This song has most beautiful lyrics, encompassing the reminiscences of the childhood. It has an enchanting soft music composition. Various childhood acts, considered to be trivial, have been depicted in this song and the singer is willing to sacrifice his wealth and fame just to return to his childhood days. The song wraps up a huge nostalgia for the old, for the childhood.

This song did the rounds on every music chart and album, when it was released back in early 90’s. It was a mega hit song and it has grown in its popularity since then. This song has earned fame even in abroad. The sense of melancholy, it awakens with its lyrics and music is simply spellbinding. I personally like this song because of the nostalgic rush which I feel after listening to it. Vivid mental images about my childhood start hovering inside me, once I happen to listen this song. That innocence and free will of children, in turn, start permeating my whole being, which gives me a feeling of immense pleasure.

The eternal connect with the past, evoked by this particular song is the linchpin of its greatness. Every age group person, every gender and every ethnicity would like to hear the soft, subtle message of this song. Voice of Jagjit infuses life in the song.

I remember travelling alone to Bhubaneswar once from New Delhi on train. It was a long 24 hours journey and initially I was so perforated that I decided opening a novel to read. It was Steve Jobs biography and while I was reading it a girl sitting at the opposite berth asked me if I was fan of Apple. I told her my interests in the shaping of Apple and we had a great conversation on Steve Jobs and how Apple shaped the world around.

We talked about the Microsoft and Apple war and then the obvious, Steve Jobs or Bill Gates. It was interesting because there were so many laughing points and then we drifted from Microsoft and Apple to India and what we as the so called youth can do something good for the country. We then shared our travel stories and it was pretty amazing. She was working for TCS in Kolkata and it was pretty amazing.

I was once travelling to Bangalore from Chennai and met this amazing guy on airplane. So, he was sitting next to me and I was busy gazing out of the airplane just to kill time and he initiated the conversation with a joke. We both laughed and then we talked about toastmasters. He was part of it and I was as well. So, we talked about our first speeches and the people we got to meet through out our toastmasters journey. Our mistakes and the people we admire for their speeches.

We then talked about travelling and the places we have been too. He had been to Dehradun and I have lived there. So, we shared our Dehradun diaries as well.
It was particularly interesting because for some reasons we found a ground to connect with and it we took off from there.

We often come across so many people at home, work and society, in general. Communication, verbal, is generally conveyed in order to give meaning to our meetings and life. When this communication happens with a known person on a particular topic or in an aligned manner, it becomes a conversation. Most of the times, conversation winds around the familiar topics like politics, weather, family and all but sometimes, they dig on some intriguing topics. One such interesting conversation, that I had had with my friend was regarding duality in spirituality. His name is Amit and he is a very close friend of mine.

Last summer, I went with my best friend Amit ,to Himalayas. We were on a trek route above Mussorie, walking the altitude of nearly 10 kms on that particular day. We had those camping tents with us to stay anywhere, in any terrain, whenever we felt like taking a break. Well, after a long stretch of continuous trekking, we reached to a plateau like broad elevation, where we decided to pitch our tents. It was evening by that time and with the bonfire lit by our sides, we commenced our discussion of God and metaphysics.

Unarguably, intriguing mystic things fascinate every one of us. Discussion about God is one such open ended discussion, where it is difficult to sum up conclusively. It was only recently, that we have found this vibrating new inclination within us, to delve deep into the abstract discussions of metaphysics and even paranormal. Miles of away from the usual city traffic and lights, camping, just two of us, in the heart of that dense Himalayan forest, was in itself an adventure calling for the unknown. On the top of that, conversation about surreal, paranormal phenomena was adding the much needed thrill for such a camping. I could sense that heartfelt titillation along with the warmth of the fire. Little after then, we could see the sky studded with so many bright stars, amiss in cities. So, all in all, beauty of those surroundings tinged with our mystic conversation, was defining the moments in a unique sense of pleasure and utter satisfaction.

Sample answer: We usually converse about our daily routines and the mundane activities involved therein. If there are exams round the corner, then we have discussions of the same. In case of sports events, we discuss about our fitness and performance levels. On a normal day, we will be conversing about our teachers, peer group, work and so on.

Sample answer: During the study period, school or college, students are immersed in an environment of freedom, joy and friends. After that, life generally takes a turn and that same student, once always occupied by friends, involves himself in family and work more. Due to this, a person is not able to devote the same amount of time with friends but they still remain as friends.

Q. 3 Where do you think, that art of conversation is useful?

Sample answer: Conversation is indeed an art. One has to master this with appropriate usage of words, conveying the most suitable and sensible meaning as a whole. This skill is very beneficial formally, in interviews and group discussions, where one has to articulate clearly about himself and the topic. It is also useful in resolving a contentious issue and furthering harmony and cooperation in a group or enterprise. Ample clarity in conversation is an essential tool for our overall survival in the society.

Q. 4 Can the style of conversation be made impressive?

Sample answer: Obviously, by engaging yourself in exhaustive discussion topics and regularly practicing the mode of conversation, one can attain the mastery in it. Enhancing one’s own lexical and grammar skills along with the practice speaking sessions can definitely bring improvements in fluency, coherency and meaning conveyance of the whole conversation.

People purchase various kinds of new products all the time. I am also fond of buying new things, especially new clothes and technology-based products. I generally take a good look at these products before purchasing in order to be sure. It has happened a few times that I purchased a few products from a renowned e-commerce website, and I was highly dissatisfied with them.

One particular incident was when I purchased an emergency light from the website. I live an area which experiences frequent power cuts and I find it difficult to move around or to study during evening and night time. I ordered it and received it on the third day. I was relieved on its arrival and ecstatically opened it to find a poorly wrapped light that was not packaged properly.

I started using it but my happiness was short lived. The light was rattling and its brightness was inconsistent. Using it in such condition was annoying but I kept on using it. After a week of daily use, I found that it worked only while charging, and lost its battery almost immediately. I was tired and highly disappointed with this product. More so, due to the fact that it was manufactured by a famous electronic brand and I purchased it due to an urgent need.

The light was almost of no use to me, and I requested for a replacement under the warranty program. Thankfully, I got a replacement from another brand, and the new light worked fine for the next two years. Since then, I avoid purchasing any products offline and prefer buying from shops where I can take a look at the product before purchasing it.

Last month during my flight from Dehradun to Delhi, I met a lady by coincidence and the conversation I had with her during the journey was unforgettable. As I was the last passenger to board the flight, the flight attendant requested me to settle down quickly on any vacant seat within reach. After the plane took off, I noticed a lady who was seating adjacent to me seemed anxious about something. By courtesy, I asked her if she needed help with something. She requested to make a call from my phone as she lost her cell phone at the airport.

 We were already away from the cellular network zone and it wasn’t possible to make any call till the time we landed. She then narrated the actual incident of how she didn’t lose her phone but her fiancé smashed her phone after he came to know that she was moving to Delhi to pursue her dreams. She then told how he started humiliating and insulting her in front of his family members.

 I tried to convince her that she wasn’t at fault and shouldn’t feel guilty for the step she took. Having this conversation made me realize that life is full of struggles. The lady even told me about how her in-laws were against her dream to become an IAS officer and serve the country.

I hardly realized when we reached our destination and it was time to bid goodbye. This conversation was interesting as I learned about the cruelty that prevails in the male-dominated community and how women today are taking their stand and fighting independently to succeed. It motivated me to never let anyone dominate or command your thoughts and actions.

SAMPLE ANSWER TWO-

I usually prefer to take brisk walks in the mornings and after dinner. Generally, I walk for 30-40 minutes at a stretch. But one fine evening in last autumn, I walked for nearly two hours. I used to take coaching classes for my IELTS exam at GMS Road in Dehradun. I used to come and go by scooter only as my home was nearly 10 kms away from the institute, near deer park. One day, it happened like my father had to take the scooter for some urgent work. As I could not afford to miss my class, so I decided to take up the auto. To my surprise, there was not any auto that could have fared me up till my institute, in a single go. I had to change 4 autos till there, which was very cumbersome.

Therefore, after my classes were over, I decided to walk instead. I knew that it was a long walk but I didn’t want to face that hassle of waiting and changing autos in a row, either. Moreover, I was free of any heavy belongings so I started treading my path.

As such, there was no one who joined me from the beginning. I was pondering over the technicalities discussed by my teacher in the class. I was also focusing on the tips, which were provided by my teacher to improve spoken English score. I was walking on the pedestrian pathway, amid the usual huzzbuzz of the city. Just then, I happened to see one of my previous classmates. His name is Dilip. We exchanged our greetings first and then, he informed me that he had to go to his uncle’s place unexpectedly, for a party, which is near deer park only. When I informed him about our common destination and my resolve to walk the entire distance, he volunteered to join me. So, in this way, I found my partner for the way. We then, started discussing our present careers and the vision for future. He was preparing for medical entrance and he too used to come to an institute close to mine.

To my surprise, we were so busy conversing with each other after a long time, that we paid no heed to the distance or the time taken in our walk. Later, I said good bye to him and reached my place. Although I was not used to such a long walk, but it had no strenuous effect. Rather, I felt so refreshing as if every pore in my body has opened for receiving the environment. It felt like the familiar adrenalin rush and I felt extremely happy.

Sample answer: It is a proven fact that physical exercises are good for the health. On the same line, walking is also beneficiary for our overall health. It involves movement of almost all parts of the body. This locomotion helps the proper flow of blood and adequate oxygen supply in our body. This, in turn, helps in better metabolism and functioning of all the body organs.

Q. 2 Should youngsters get involved in walking as exercise?

Sample answer: As mentioned, walking is indeed a good exercise. But, for youngsters, I would suggest that they should take up more enervating exercises like running, as they have more energies than the older people. When a person grows old and becomes inefficient to run properly, then walking can act as a good substitute.

Q. 3 Do you prefer walking alone or with someone? What about exercises?

Sample answer: I am a young fellow and as such walking taken up my me occasionally doesn’t come under the category of strict exercises. Nor do I prefer to walk extra fast like some people do. Therefore, for me, walking is a kind of leisure exercise and hence I enjoy the others’ company, if I could get that. As far as the pure strict exercises are concerned, I don’t prefer anyone else to give me company, as, then it becomes a task of focus and attentiveness.
