Answer:

In modern times, there are many ways of acquiring a new skill if we’re keen enough. Today, I would like to take this opportunity to talk about a skill that I acquired completely by myself.

I learnt basic video editing. It all started when I wanted to make a travel vlog of a family trip that we went on. But I had no idea how to combine video clips, add music or trim a footage properly.

So, I decided to learn it on my own using the free resources that are available on the Internet. I spent hours watching tutorials, reading articles on video editing, and more. Finally, I downloaded a beginner-friendly editing software. I started experimenting with the editing software myself, and before I knew it, I was able to edit videos on my own.

The biggest challenge, I would say, was the amount of trial and error involved in the learning process. I believe that we become worst before we become better, and that’s what I experienced. For instance, if I was trying get an audio to sync properly with the video, I’d miss to trim the footage first. I also struggled with understanding the technical terms such as ‘keyframes’ and ‘transition’, which required a lot of googling and rewatching tutorials.

Eventually, the hard work paid off. I began to understand the logic behind the steps instead of copying them blindly, and my video edits started looking noticeably more professional.

So, all in all, this skill has turned out to be pretty useful in my day-to-day life, and I’m really proud of myself for learning this without any professional help.

Sample Answer

Food is one of our basic needs. Certainly, we need food to survive. Nevertheless, we need varieties of tasty cuisines to relish and feel satisfied. Food stimulates our brains and provides us satisfaction. Being raised in an Indian family, delicious food has always been my weakness. Food is the source of bringing family and friends together on different occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, etc. Great and long-lasting memories are created while having lunch or dinner together. Everyone is fond of some or the other type of food; it depends on the taste and ethnicity.

My birthday has recently passed. My younger sister had organised a small surprise party for me at our home. She invited all my close friends. Though my sister did not know how to cook, she learned and cooked a special recipe for the party. She cooked litti chokha for the guests. It is popular in the states of Bihar and Jharkhand.

Litti looks like a small ball made up of whole wheat flour, whereas chokha is prepared by mashing brinjal, potatoes and tomatoes together. Traditionally, littis were roasted over coal or cow-dung cakes, but now the same can be roasted in a microwave. The richness of the dish is increased when a dollop of ghee is poured over the litti balls. It is a main-course recipe. It has an authentic flavour of ginger, garlic and Indian spices. It is generally served with spicy pickles and green chutney.

We all liked the dish and appreciated my sister for the efforts she put in to learn and cook a traditional recipe. This dish is special to me, as it was prepared by my sister for the first time just to surprise me. I was really touched by her sweet gesture of love and care.

IELTS Cue Card: Important Decision

Describe an important decision that you made in your life :
You should say :

  •  what the decision was
  • when did you took it
  • what was the result of the decision and whether it was a good choice

explain why it is an important decision or choice for you?

Sample Answer of Cue Card:

We all make certain decisions in life, and those are the ones that shape our lives. I took that life-changing decision when I was in class 10. The city where I did my high school did not have many schools, and I decided that I would do my further studies in a big city because that is where I wanted to be. So, I landed myself in Dehradun. I remember at that time I just wanted to go out, explore myself and do things. What followed after that were a series of wrong decisions made.

I chose the wrong school and made friends that did not do much to benefit me. It was that time that I became numb, feeling almost nothing, and landed myself in many troubles. My parents had the toughest years of bringing me up, and I remember thinking of myself as a complete failure. Two years later, when I landed myself in a college, things started changing, and the final change took place when I got a job at an MNC.

 Important Decision

It is now that I realise that no matter how the decision rolled out, no matter how tough the time it led me to, I now can make better decisions now. I do understand the importance of opportunities and hard work and realise that it is important to have a balance in life to be able to succeed.

The reason I think the decision was important is because it taught me a lot of things, and what amazes me the most is that the things that it did teach are ones that many elders to me don’t know. It is in those moments that I feel I have become wiser. I do make mistakes, but it has helped me in becoming more confident in life and more able to take risks and live life on my own terms and conditions.

Related Questions for Speaking Section 3

How do parents’ decisions affect their children’s lives?

Parents’ decisions do shape the child’s life to a certain extent, and I believe that in some cases it is the parent’s decision that explains why the child chooses to live life like that. Even more, it is not possible for a child to make his or her decision, and it is the decisions of parents that the child follows. If the parent takes decisions that make a child dull or boring, there is no fault of the child. However, there are parents who teach children to make decisions, and I believe it is a great thing to do.

What important things do you consider while taking a big decision?

Funnily enough, the most important decisions of my life are the ones which I did not think a bit about. These were the decisions; I just felt like doing them and did it. Initially, I was told that I was an idiot for taking decisions in such a manner, but now I have realised that taking decisions in this manner means I do take them from the heart, and for some reason it knows what exactly to do.

When taking a big decision, I try to figure out every right and wrong about it. There is a lot of brainstorming between the people around me and myself. I like to talk to people who have been in the same position as me, the ones who have done that. Then, I go on and talk to my parents about it. But, finally, it is more of what I feel is right because I think it is good to listen to my head because it tells the most rational things to do, but, ultimately, I am a believer of heart and do things that my heart thinks are right.

SAMPLE ANSWER:
I believe gifts play an important role in expressing one’s emotions towards their loved ones. I once gave my best friend a present. Her name is Monika, and I know her since my school days; she has always been with me through thick and thin. I really appreciate her presence in my life, so I wanted to give her something special. The occasion was her 20th birthday, and I had specially been saving money for the same from a long time.
The gift that I gave her was actually a purple-coloured bear plushie. It was from her favourite brand Miniso, which is a Japanese company for minimal and aesthetic items. I chose that soft toy because I remembered her complaining about having insomnia. Therefore, it clicked me that the plushie could act as an emotional companion when she experiences sleeplessness. It cost me about three thousand bucks, and it was totally worth it, as the quality was top-notch and it was extremely soft to touch. It also felt very warm due to its furry fabric.
Monika was so delighted to receive that surprise, and later she told me that fortunately her sleep is getting better.
