IELTS CUE CARD: Describe a book you recently read

IELTS CUE CARD: Describe a book you recently read.

You should say:

What the book is
What it is about
Why you decided to read it
Explain how you felt about it

Sample Answer:
Reading has always been my favourite pastime. I would like to take this opportunity to talk about a book that I read recently.
The title of the book is “The Alchemist”. It’s written by Paulo Coelho. It’s a fictional novel based in Egypt. The main character is a young boy named Santiago who is a shepherd. In the story, he travels from Spain to Egypt in search of a treasure. The novel focuses on Santiago’s journey and how he learns about life along the way.
I decided to read this book because a colleague recommended it to me. He kept saying how this has completely changed his perception of life. That really sparked my curiosity, and I decided to give it a chance. The storyline was so interesting that I ended up finishing it in just a few days.

The story follows Santiago as he leaves his family to follow a recurring dream about a treasure near the Egyptian Pyramids. Along the way he meets several people who teach him valuable lessons about life, people and the consequences of actions.

What I found most interesting was the way the author used simple language to teach such intricate things about life. There’s a line in this book about how the universe conspires to help you when you truly want something, and that particular idea really touched me.

In the end, I would just like to say that I felt genuinely inspired after reading this book. It reminded me that it’s important to keep working towards our goals, and no matter how many obstacles come in the way, we will achieve them. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fictional stories with deep meaning.

IELTS CUE CARD: Describe an object that is important to you

Describe an object that is important to you.

You should say:

  • What the object is
  • Where did you get it from
  • How long have you had it
  • Why it is Important to you

ANSWER:

We all have certain belongings that mean much more to us than their actual price. I would like to take the opportunity to talk about my most important possession.

It is a wristwatch that my father gave me on my eighteenth birthday. It’s a silver-coloured, old-style watch, nothing fancy or expensive, but it holds a lot of value for me. I’ve had it for five years now.

I still remember the day he gave it to me. It was my birthday eve. I was excited all day because I was turning eighteen. At midnight, after cutting the cake, my father gifted me this watch. He said that a watch teaches a person the value of time. He wanted me to become a woman who values the time of others as well as my own. He said that punctuality brings discipline, and discipline brings success. Those words have been imprinted on my mind ever since.

From that day onwards, I’ve worn this watch almost every single day. What makes it even more precious is that it’s not just a gift but also a reminder of my father’s valuable advice. Whenever I look at it, I remember what he taught me, and it kind of motivates me to do better.

There was actually a time when I lost it for a few days, and I felt so anxious and upset, almost like I had lost something quite expensive. But luckily, I found it a few days later, and I was so relieved. I’ve been careful about the watch ever since then.

In the end, I would like to say that this watch is important to me not because of its monetary value, but because of the memories associated with it.

IELTS CUE CARD: Describe a person you admire

Describe a person you admire.

You should say:

  • Who this person is
  • How you know this person
  • What qualities this person has
  • Why you admire this person.

ANSWER:

We meet so many individuals on a regular basis, but there’s usually one person who leaves an impression in your life. Today, I would like to take this opportunity to describe one such person in my life.

A person that I really admire is my uncle. He is my father’s elder brother. Although he is my father’s brother, but he has always acted like a father figure for everyone in my family. My ‘Baba’, as we dearly call him, has struggled a lot in his life. My paternal grandparents left this world when my father and uncle were just kids. Since then, my uncle has taken care of my father and fulfilled all his needs. He compromised his education so that my dad could eat properly. And throughout this, he kept smiling. And that’s what I admire about him the most – his patience, resilience, and his ability to smile even in the toughest of times. Apart from this, he’s also very caring. Whenever anyone in the family is going through a difficult time, he is always the first person to step up and support them, whether it’s financially or through good advice.

Another thing that I respect about him is that he never stopped learning, even at this age. A few years back, he learned how to use a smartphone just so he could video call me as I started living away from home due to my studies. According to me, that shows how open-minded he is.

I know him so well because we’ve spent so much time together, especially during my childhood. Honestly some of my best childhood memories are with him.

To conclude, I just want to say that I admire him because of his strength, patience, resilience, and his ability to smile in hard times. He has taught me a lot and I hope I become even a little bit like him someday.

Sample Answer:
Learning new things is good for our overall development. The only way we can make sure that our knowledge doesn’t become stagnant is by continuous learning. I would like to take this opportunity to talk about my recent experience where I learned about space. This happened a few months ago when I visited the Nehru Planetarium in Mumbai. Actually, I’ve always been curious about the sky and stars, but I never really got the chance to learn about them properly. One day, a spontaneous plan with my friends led me to the planetarium, mainly because I heard that it has a really good show about the stars. After reaching the venue, we paid for the show as soon as we entered. I was amazed by the dome-shaped screen. We sat down, and then the show started. Because of the dome-shaped screen, it all felt like it was actually happening. I felt like I was travelling in space and watching stars. There was a narrator who explained every intricate detail with such clarity that all my doubts faded away. I also learned some interesting facts, like how the light from the stars sometimes takes a millennium to reach us. I found quite intriguing.
Apart from the show, there was many models and displays outside the screening area which explained different celestial phenomena beautifully.
Honestly speaking, I felt really happy and inspired after this visit. It made me realise how minute we are compared to the vast universe.
To sum up, I learnt a lot of things that day, and if I ever get a chance to revisit that place, I’d definitely take it.
