Describe a time when you had to go to the doctor’s/hospital

You should say:

  • What was wrong with you
  • How you felt at that time
  • What happened at the doctor’s/hospital

And explain what treatment you were given to help you get better.

Sample Answer:

Hospital is that one place where no one would like to visit. I personally hate going to the doctor’s. But I had to visit one recently. Due to frequent travelling to varied altitudes and atmosphere, I got home having terrible cold and viral infection. It was accompanied by heavy head, continuous sneezing and a runny nose which left me in moderate discomfort.

I felt too sick and in pain. Due to the ever-growing headache I couldn’t concentrate on any thing and found it impossible to do even the smallest everyday task. My head felt like it weighed a ton and I could barely keep my eyes open due to the developing stress. After no more resistance, I decided that I need to visit the doctor’s.

The doctor checked me and asked me how I was feeling. He checked my pulse and my body temperature. He asked me to open my mouth, take my tongue out and checked it subsequently for any possible infections and if there are any possible symptoms of typhoid. He further checked my blood pressure and concluded that I have developed intense allergy infections probably due to the temperature changes and dust inhaled during the travels. He prescribed me some medicines and a cough syrup to be taken at regular interval for 3 days. He advised me to avoid any cold food items and beverages. He also suggested that I drink turmeric milk and ginger lemon honey tea for instant healing. He asked me to take plenty of rest and avoid going out in the dirt. The suggestions were useful and my health improved significantly in a couple of days.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Special days have great importance in all our lives, they make the boring and the dull and gloomy days pass by, all because of the hope for a special day. In the past few years, I have had many occasions where I felt my breath was taken away. The gratitude I felt for God and the people around me was immense. One such day was when I went to Shravenbelagola for a Jain festival.

The Jain festival happens once in 12 years and in it their God, Bahubali is showered with milk, water, and many other things. Lacs of people from across the country and worldwide come to pay tribute to the God. There are many media people from all over and it gets attended by politicians of my country.

I visited Shravenbelagola, which is 3 hours from Bengaluru, all alone. It had to be my first solo trip. Being in a completely new place, I initially was really scared, not knowing exactly where I would go or where would I stay. On the D-Day, however, I made friends, got to attend the event right from the top because of the passes they had, and free food, because it was a government event.

Coming back from the event, I saw people rushing and throwing each other to get to the top and I felt so special. It was that day I realized the importance of people in our lives. They make good things better and bad things good. Had I not made those friends, my trip may have been a failure.

IELTS Speaking Cue Card: A plan that did not work

IELTS Speaking Cue Card: A plan that did not work

Describe a plan you made but it did not work.

You should say:

  • what the plan was
  • when you made it
  • why it did not work
  • and explain how you felt when your plan did not work
Sample Answer

Planning is the essence of life. If plans are made carefully and comprehensively, in most cases they work but it’s not necessary that every plan we make will be successful. Today, I’m going to talk about a plan that failed.

I am a science student. Last year I passed my 12th class with excellent grades, A+ in all subjects. After completion of my final exams, my father contacted an overseas education consultant to discuss the courses for my higher education. Since my academic performance was very good, the counsellor gave us many options like Batchelor’s in Science or Business Administration or Computer Applications in Canada, Australia and Europe. It was a difficult task to choose from such a wide range of options. I and my parents thought about all of them. The final decision was to go to Canada for Bachelor’s in Computer Applications, commonly known as BCA.

I received a letter of acceptance for a 4-year course in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia. It was an achievement for me. At that time I didn’t know this happiness was short-lived and my dream will shatter like a vase.  To my surprise, it was an expensive course. We were expected to arrange about two million rupees for my tuition fees, accommodation and other expenses. My father applied for an education loan in a local bank in my hometown. Initially, the bank manager seemed quite willing to approve the loan but later on he kept on delaying the process. Sadly, my parents couldn’t arrange enough funds for my fees and we missed the deadline of fee submission.

You can imagine how I felt when I lost this opportunity. I was heartbroken and helpless. Had our loan been approved on time, I’d have become a graduate of one of the most renowned universities in the world. My parents supported me a lot and helped me come out of this painful experience. Now, I’m pursuing BCA in India. May be I could go abroad for a Master’s in Computer Science. This time I’ll make sure that I have sufficient funds before applying to any college or university.

IELTS Cue Card # Describe a television program that you watch.

IELTS Cue Card about a television program.

Describe a television program that you watch.
You should say:

  • which kind of television programme that is
  • what usually happens in the television programme
  • why you enjoy watching the television programme
  • and explain why you would recommend the television programme to other people.
Sample Answer:

I would like to talk about HOUSE MD. It is an American television medical drama. The series’ main character is Dr Gregory House played by Hugh Laurie, an unconventional, misanthropic medical genius who, despite his dependence on pain medication, leads a team of diagnosticians at the fictional Princeton–Plainsboro Teaching Hospital (PPTH) in New Jersey.
House often clashes with his fellow physicians, including his own diagnostic team, because many of his hypotheses about patients’ illnesses are based on subtle or controversial insights. His flouting of hospital rules and procedures frequently leads him into conflict with his boss, hospital administrator and Dean of Medicine Dr Lisa Cuddy played by Lisa Edelstein. House’s only true friend is Dr James Wilson played by Robert Sean Leonard, head of the Department of Oncology.
I really like watching House, for Gregory and his unconventional medical theories and practices (like giving placebo to patients) and on the other characters’ reactions to them, rather than on the details of the treatments. He frequently proclaims during the team’s deliberations, “The patient is lying”, or “Everybody lies”; such an assumption guides House’s decisions and diagnoses. Because many of his hypotheses are based on epiphanies or controversial insights, he often has trouble obtaining permission for medical procedures he considers necessary from his superior.
Total of eight seasons, House was among the top 10 series in the United States from its second through fourth seasons. Distributed to 66 countries, House was the most-watched television program in the world in 2008. I would recommend it to other people for, this series offers insight into the medical world and various types of diseases which most of us have never heard of. And how by running differential diagnosis and listing etiologies they finally narrow down to the cause, find the correct diagnosis and save the patient. (301 words)
