  WRITING TASK 1 IELTS Rice

Sample Answer:

The bar graph illustrates the data about the ten leading rice producers across the globe in 2015.

One striking feature of the chart is that nine of the ten top rice producing countries in the world in 2015 were in Asia. China stood at the top position with approximately 145 million tons. It was followed by India which produced just under 105 million tons. The third and the fourth biggest producers were Indonesia and Bangladesh. The combined production of these two nations was about 70 million tons, almost one third of the Indian share.

The next level was grabbed by Vietnam which contributed nearly 28 million tons. In comparison, rice production in other Asian countries such as Philippines, Burma and Thailand was comparatively less with each producing around 12, 13 and 19 million tons respectively. The only non-Asian producer on the list, Brazil, accounted for just over eight million tons. Japan followed Brazil with similar level of production, close to 8 million tons.

In general, it is evident that there are considerable differences in the amounts of rice produced by the given countries. Notably, China and India contributed maximum to the total production.

Tip 1: Look at the data carefully and note down the highest, lowest and almost equal figures. Tip 2: Pay attention to the given units. Round off large numbers, e.g. 104,800 thousand = just under 105 million

SAMPLE ANSWER

When we talk about childhood, the first memories that we can recall are of our good times spent in school. I studied in Convent of Jesus & Mary, Dehradun. It is one of the most prestigious and oldest schools in Dehradun. Even though many years have passed since I left school, I vividly remember the impressive layout and architecture of my school.

There was a huge church at the entrance. After the church, there was a beautiful garden on one side and the rows of colourful seasonal flowers gave a warm welcome. All the students walked along this floral path towards the main building. A sense of calm pervaded over me when I stepped into the school every morning and walked down towards the main building.

The junior and senior sections had dedicated buildings. A vast playground separated the two wings. The playground was fully equipped with swings, monkey bars and sea-saws. Swings were my favourite. It was a routine for me to reach early so that I could go on the swings for few minutes before going to my class.

All the teachers in my school were very loving and caring. Throughout my schooling we were taught how to lead a disciplined life. The focus was on all round development and the teachers encouraged the students to participate in a range of extracurricular activities, from dramatics, dancing, singing to sports. The personality of every student was nurtured with utmost responsibility.

I consider myself fortunate to attend this school. Whatever I have achieved today the credit for it goes to the dedication of the teachers.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Generally, we tend to ignore the bounties bestowed upon us by nature. In the daily hustle bustle of our life we sometimes forget to enjoy the basic joys of living. Looking at the sky and admiring its infinite space is one of them.

If I have to go back and recollect when I first admired the sky, it would probably be in my childhood. I used to live in our ancestral house with my parents, grandparents and uncles. There was a huge garden in front of our house. Power failures were common in our area. I vividly remember, when I was about 6-7 years old, one late evening there was a usual power cut. It was quiet dark and all my family members moved out and sat in the garden as there was no power backup in our house in those times.

I sat on my mother’s lap. Everyone was chatting and my mother started singing. She taught me a song about the moon and the stars. While I was learning the song I looked towards the sky. That is probably my first recollection of admiring the sky. I was intrigued by the endless twinkling stars and the big moon perched on a fluffy cloud. Even though I tried to count the stars, I couldn’t. I wanted to reach out to the sky so that I could have a closer look at the world up above in the sky.

I can never forget the magical view of the sky that evening. Going out and looking at the sky became a part of my childhood and those sweet memories make me happy even today.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Nowadays, traffic congestion has become a major concern in many cities across the globe. This essay will discuss the reasons behind this problem and suggest possible measures that can be implemented to handle the situation.

One of the major reasons is that the ownership of vehicles has increased in the past few years which leads to soaring number of automobiles on roads. According to some reports, Hong Kong experienced one of the biggest traffic congestions in 2014 which lasted for more than 24 hours. Secondly, in many cities the infrastructure for public transport is not fully developed and it is not available for the entire day. Due to which people prefer to use private mode of transport over public transport. Thirdly, many cities around the world are not built with proper planning and also there are narrow roads which obstruct people from commuting.

Certain measures can be taken to deal with this situation. Firstly, government should increase the quality of public transport by providing frequent services. In addition to this, fares of government transportation should also be reduced in order to promote it. Another measure is to construct wide roads and bridges so that traffic can move smoothly during peak hours. Furthermore, separate cycle lanes should be constructed and people should be encouraged to ride bicycles. Finally, major city centres or crowded places of the city must be declared car free and fine should be imposed on those who do not follow the rules.

To sum up, by developing public transport and making rules stringent, the problem of traffic congestion can be reduced to a great extent.
