IELTS Writing Essay, Prison is the only truly effective form of punishment
“Prison is the only truly effective form of punishment, because it separates criminals from society.” To what extent do you support this view? You should give reasons for your answer, and include ideas and examples from your own knowledge and experience.
There is no doubt that we need to find effective forms of punishment for criminals and also find ways to protect citizens from the threat of crime. I personally feel that prison is one of the many options we should have at our disposal but is not always the most effective.
Firstly, I do not accept that all criminals need to be separated from society. Juvenile and minor offenders can be punished through fines, community service or other non-custodial means. This is cheaper than prison and prevents the damage to the criminal’s family which in itself could generate further social problems. Furthermore, by keeping these small-scale criminals in society, we can try to rehabilitate them, for example through training or education programmes. This will help to reduce re- offending in future.
Besides this, if offenders are believed to be a threat to their fellow citizens, there are ways of containing them such as electronic tagging, curfews or regular reporting to the police. Such methods have been shown to be effective in reducing criminal behaviour and are themselves quite a strong punishment, as they restrict an offender’s freedom greatly. Finally, we should remember that prisons are to some extent ‘schools of crime’ and in many cases prisoners end their jail terms as more capable and determined criminals than when they entered.
Of course, it is true that in certain cases we need to both punish criminals and isolate them from other people. I recognise that violent or dangerous people need to be imprisoned – yet I believe this applies to a small minority of instances.
To conclude, I feel that prison is a last resort in cases where there is no alternative. This does not make it the only effective punishment, but rather the most severe among a variety of possibilities.
Describe a historical place that you know about.
You should say:
What the place is
Where it is located
What is the historical significance of the place
And describe your experience of the place.
I have been travelling frequently for the past one year and in this time, I have visited many places of historical significance. There are many places that have blown my mind away with their architecture and historical significance but none so more than the Ajanta and Ellora caves.
The caves are an ancient monument that date back to 2nd century BCE. They are approximately 30 in number however, more were added to them later on in the coming centuries. According to historians they are monasteries and worship halls of Buddhists monks. They have greatly influenced Indian art that followed in the coming years.
They are located in Aurangabad district of Maharashtra (Western India). The caves include paintings and rock-cut sculptures which are very well preserved. They are first of their own kind as experts say the paintings and gestures made by the sculptures show emotions. Vivid colours were used to make wall paintings while fine clay was used to make statues.
There are several accounts mentioning the caves in the history however it was not until the British rule in 18th century that they were discovered hidden in the forest. They are a UNESCO world heritage site and have had a strong influence on artefacts as well in the spread of Buddhism in south East Asia. They were used as monasteries for monks who were travelling around spreading Buddhism so apart from cultural significance it also has a lot of religious importance too.
Well it was very mesmerising to be honest. The caves are still very well preserved and to see such art and different colours being used in it during that time not only describes the importance of colours in our life, but also how advanced Indians were in art and craft during those times. As someone who is fond of history all I can say is, I was mind blown by those caves and no amount of splendid photography can do justice to such marvellous structures.
IELTS CUE CARD: SITUATION WHEN YOU HELPED AN OLDER PERSON
You should say:
Who the old person was
how you helped him
what did you feel about it
Explain why you liked helping the old person so much.
Old people should be always respected due to their phasing out days of life. As one grows old he or she is looking for compassion, care and attention as they feel left out due to their inability to move out from their homes. Some kind of physical deformity further restricts their movement and makes them depressed.
Recently I decided to go and meet my grandfather who has grown very old. He is an octogenarian and stays with my paternal uncle. I spent two days with him. On the first day I sat with him the entire day and just carried out gossiping, discussing my childhood days and the wonderful times I spent with him. He took out an old album and made me see the old photos of our family which was very nostalgic. In the evening I slept in his room as it became very late discussing things with him.
Second day I decided to take him to a market. Since it was after a long time that we had a chance to go out together, he felt exhilarated. He also remembered visiting this market with my grandmother. It not only rejuvenated his memories but also made him a bit nostalgic. We purchased a few products from a local bakery which he liked a lot with his morning tea. Later we went to his doctor for his routine checkups and purchased few medicines.
In the evening we returned back from our outing. Since we were tired, we sat and enjoyed the evening tea. He was sounding extremely contended by the outing and was looking freshened up .He showered me with his blessings and thanked me for making his day.
IELTS CUE CARD: STATE OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT. You should say:
What are different types of public transport systems
What is the benefit of public transport
How to maintain public transportation vehicles
Explain what you feel about their usage in your country
Public transport is one of the most economical and easily accessible modes of reaching different places in our country. These are available in various forms like Metro Trains, buses, EMU trains and government approved taxi services. These transport systems are the best via media to commute in today’s fast moving world. Due to its nominal rates even a common man is able to move without burning his pocket. Government promotes public transport as it not only helps to reduce heavy traffic, but also helps to keep pollution under control.
Though public transport is of great assistance but it is disheartening to see the state of the vehicles especially the buses and the EMUs. It is the responsibility of the citizens to help the authorities to keep these transport facilities clean and hygienic. Most of us do not respect the law and make these vehicles dirty which reflect our society in a very negative way.
Like in Metro Trains, there should be strict laws so as to impose heavy fines if someone is found littering and spoiling public transport .Media should also be made responsible to create awareness and more and more people should be educated to respect this wonderful facility provided by the Government.
