IELTS Dehradun The pie charts illustrate the variation in the running costs of the Indian railway in three separate year 2012.

Answer: (Level band 8.5)

The pie charts illustrate the variation in the running costs of the Indian railway in three separate years 1992, 2002 and 2012.

In all three years, the greatest expenditure was on fuel and workers’ salaries including benefits. Fuel spending increased dramatically from 28% in 1992 to 38% in 2002 but the expenses reduced to their nominal value of 29% in 2012. Approximately, employees wages and benefits used the same proportion, 26-30%.

In the year 1992, one fifth of the annual budget went towards taxes and slightly less, 16%, was spent on resources such as equipment and rentals. Surprisingly, the smallest fraction, 10%, was expended on the modernization of railways in this year. In the next two decades, there were small fluctuations of the order of two percent in the expenditure on taxes. Comparitively, the budget for equipment saw a downward trend, ending at only four percent of the total in 2012. In a sharp contrast, the spending on railway development experienced a rising trend, growing from only 6% in 2002 to a whooping 20% by 2012.

Overall, staff salaries and fuel constituted the largest cost to the Indian railway, and while figures fluctuated for most categories, the modernization expenditure went up significantly.

IELTS Essay Sample Answer # Purpose Of Zoo

You should spend 40 minutes on this task.

Zoo has no useful purpose.

Do you agree or disagree with the statement?

Write at least 250 words.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Keeping wild animals in cages for public exhibition is a tradition that people are performing for a long and for majority people this is an amusement and educational purpose for kids while others think it to be a very inhuman act. In recent times, the importance and reason for zoo has been put into scrutiny.

The most important use of zoo is for education. A child can obviously not go to the jungle to understand the animal life, however, it is very easy for him/her to observe animals closely in zoo. Secondly, it is a great help for animals that go stray. It is often seen that animals like monkey or tigers lose their way and enter into cities. Zoo provides them with an atmosphere like their natural habitat, and also the safety.

However, zoo could be irritating for many animals and birds, especially when they are brought from their natural habitat to an artificial one, only to meet the “purpose”. Even more, often kids are very rude to animals ;teasing or throwing things at them, this adds up to their frustration. Even more, although often it is not allowed to take pictures, people do take. The camera flashes tends to irritate the animals. In addition, with coming of internet, children can understand and see the animal life, on it.

Overall, zoo do serve a purpose but the downsides of having one, exceed the need of zoo. In my opinion, since the animal life is slowly moving towards extinction, more and more steps to keep them mentally and physically fit must be taken.

Travel is an integral part of our lives and we travel for a great variety of reasons. However, in recent times the number of people owning a car has increased, as people want to now travel with more comfort and freedom.

On the positive side, a private car is more convenient mode of transportation. Having more comfortable seat, ventilation or other novel technologies help people to feel better than using of other methods, like bicycle or public bus. Secondly, it provides more security when compared to public transport. For instance, a women is more likely to feel safe while driving a car at night than coming home late night in public vehicle.

However, a privately owned car also has some disadvantages. Firstly, city travelers have to spend longer hours on traffic jams. With the increase in the use of private cars, the density of traffic has been increased phenomenally and citizens have had to stay longer time on traffic load. Secondly, the use of cars to commute has decreased the average health of car users as they do not need to do any physical movement.

Overall, cars do bring in some great benefits to is owners, in a long run, they tend to harm more than help. But, if the owners take proper care of health and more people pool drive, one will be able to enjoy its advantages better.
