IELTS Essay Sample Questions # People After Prison

You should spend 40 minutes on this tast.
Some people believe that people who have been in prison become good citizens later. It is often argued that these people are the best to guide teenagers about committing a crime.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?

This is a question for the IELTS academic writing section. Before you start writing the answer for the IELTS, the first thing that needs to be done is pin down the points which are going to help you form the sentences for the essays. Make sure you figure out early the flow of your essay, the kind of words you will be using and then move ahead with the essay part.

POINTS

  1. People in prison understand their mistakes and more importantly the circumstances in which they made them. This helps in understanding the other person who might be on the same path.
  2. There is no one better than them who understands the consequences of the things that a wrong move can take.
  3. People after having lived in prison can explain better how to live a life not falling into the loopholes that one might just get into.
  4. There is no guarantee that a person who has been in jail for a certain act might not do another. There are people who do revolutionize but then there are even others who still hold by the fact of a prisoners life.
  5. It is not necessary that a person who is living in prison could actually bring about change in the way people think about crime.

Once the points have been written you need to make sure what your point of view is  going to be. What is the exact thing that you feel about the topic. Make sure that you give certain examples for the topic and when you are sure of it, go ahead and do it. There are even people who spend around 15 minutes on figuring out what to say and when that is done, bring out the best in the remaining time. There is although, no such time limit on how much you should spend on figuring out what needs to be written but make sure that when you start writing the final essay you have already made a draft about what you are going to write down.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Prisoners are the people who have experienced the tough consequences certain actions can lead to. Some people argue that these people know the best and could help teenagers from not taking any dramatic step in their lives. In my opinion, if a person has truly evolved after spending life in prison, surely they can have a great impact on other people lives.

Teenage years are the ones in which a person is susceptible to lot of things and with an increased crime rate committed by teenagers, there are several reasons for criminals to help individuals. Firstly, a person who has been in the prison can explain in a better and deeper way the consequences one could have to face for wrong actions. They have examples and more importantly, they understand the other individual better as at some point, they can inter relate. Secondly, it is easier for them to judge the other person. So a prisoner can very easily predict the kind of trouble a teenager is having and under what circumstances can he or she take any drastic step.

However, it is not necessary that a person who has been in jail understands the consequences. It is very likely to be possible that the person has no regrets going to jail. If someone like him or her, counsels a teenagers the outcome could be more devastating than expected. Even more, it is not obvious that a person who has been in jail can influence people to be better.

In conclusion, a person who has faced the consequences of his or her actions can surely bring out change in the lives of others but it is not a compulsion. The most important thing is how well the people receive him or her and how well the person has evolved after the tenure in jail. (304 Words)

Write a letter to your host family. In your letter –

  • Introduce yourself.
  • ask the family for some information
  • tell the family about your arrival date and time

Dear Sir/Madam,

My name is Anmol and have been selected for my ‘honours’ with Oxford University. Recently, I received a letter from the university that you will be taking care of my stay in London.

I am an Indian, currently working as the ‘project lead’ with an MNC. In my family, I have my parents and a younger brother who is presently doing his ‘Masters in Technology’ from MIT.

It will be great if you could tell me about other facilities apart from the accommodation, specifically regarding weather and some information about the transportation facilities especially during odd hours i.e. 10:00 pm to 6:00 am. In addition, it will be very nice of you to inform me about various ways to commute from your place to the university. Even more how can I reach your place from the airport.

I’ll be arriving on January 23, although my course commences on January 28.

Sample Answer One

With computers in our hand, highly skilled individuals at our workforce and every day inventions that are changing the way that we work. Technology has surely made a great impact on the way we work. There are opinions that technology is destroying the middle class and ultimately many jobs. However, people believe that technology is making lives easier allowing people to focus not only on their work but maintain a healthy lifestyle.

There has been a shift in the kind of jobs that people used to do in the past decade. From times, when organizations required people who could put their data into a register, maintain the register. A skilled workforce is required that knows how to operate on computers, better if they know database. Even more, with everything coming online, there is a huge demand of people who can do online jobs. So, one can find jobs like content writer, editor, fashion designer and so much more online.

Even more, technology has allowed people to work for their own. For example, there have been individuals like Gursimran Khamba, Tanmay Bhatt and many others who have earned well off by putting their art online. Also, with technology people have gained much more freedom with respect to work. More and more people now work from home allowing them to balance both their work and life.

Overall, technology has surely changed the way people work. With more sophisticated software becoming easily accessible to individuals, work has become easier and more flexible. However, there have been people who have lost their jobs to technology, the ones who were able to change and learn working with automation have gained success. (276 Words)

Technology is the application of science and in the past few centuries we have been able to invent some of the best technologies that have changed the way things are done. From the way we work to the way we relax technology has surely entered every sphere of our life, mainly affecting our work. Although, it has made our lives easier, there have been many unskilled or low skilled jobs that have been lost for technology.

Technology is almost everywhere in our workplace from fax machines to the printers. We require technology for almost everything. From days when everything was stored in hard copies, we have moved into time when everything information is stored in databases. Organizations demand for individuals who know, how to use them. The farmers need not to plough the entire field on their own, but they can easily do it with the help of tractors.

Even more, with space technology becoming so efficient, it has become more easier for us to predict the simple of things like weather, allowing people to plan things accordingly. Invention of internet has connected everyone around. A company is now able to operate from different geographical spaces and yet stay connected. People are not defined by their work space and can easily work from the place and time that they want to.

In conclusion, just like industrial revolution, the advancement in technology has transformed many jobs, requiring a completely new skill set as compared to earlier times. While many have changed themselves to fit into this new technical world, others have resented and just like always the one who changed have gained more success.(273 Words)

  3. Helps in promoting better understanding and amity among people.

  5. People tend to hurt the sentiments of the inhabitants.
  6. governments should explain the social etiquette and values to individuals.

SAMPLE ANSWER

Tourism is about visiting new places with religious, cultural and historical importance. Travelling helps people know and expand beyond their present and in recent times there has been an increased number of people who love travelling. This allows host country to get rich income. With countries working on tourism, it has become a major source of foreign exchange.

There are several merits of tourism. Firstly, it enhances the value and image of the nation in front of the entire world. There is a flow of foreign investment which leads to improvement of infrastructure facilities. Not only this, there are jobs and careers created for individuals. For example, a country with great tourism, allows people to jump in its business, from hotels to tourist shops and lot more. Even more, travel reduces the difference among diversified sections of society and promotes better understanding, amity among people.

However, there are certain disadvantages associated with tourism. With the increased number of tourist, tourist places have been getting polluted and losing their natural beauty. Even more, often to earn more revenue from a particular place, certain changes are made to the local area, that leads to the area losing its originality. There are even times when tourist and local people have rifts between them, causing worry and tension among people.

Governments should design comprehensive tourism policy to promote tourism. There should be program and shows to publicize a particular place. Even more, tourists should be asked to undergo medical examination and be explained about the social etiquette and values.

In conclusion, tourism has surely become an important revenue source and efforts must be taken to modernize it. It allows for better international relations between countries and a feeling of universal brotherhood. (287 Words)
