IELTS Academic Writing Task 1

The two maps below show road access to a hospital in 2008 and 2011.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparisons where relevant.

Write at least 150 words.

Sample Answer

The two maps depict the major changes which have taken place in the route to City Hospital between the year 2007 and 2010.

In general, it seems that the road accessibility to city hospital has become better and well planned. In the first map, we can see that city hospital was surrounded by ring road, which was further connected to city road by hospital road. Three different bus stops were constructed on both the sides of hospital road. Car parking facility was also provided on the left side of the hospital road.

In three years, remarkable construction was done to improve the reachability to city hospital. A bigger bus station was built in the eastern side of the hospital and next to it, trees were planted . Two roundabouts were also erected at the beginning and the end of hospital road. All bus stops were demolished on both the sides of hospital road. A new public park was constructed in the west side of the hospital road, whereas, on the opposite side, a car parking area was reserved for the staff only.

To sum up, significant changes were made in the road access to the city hospital. Most of the changes took place in the area near the hospital road only, whereas the areas around the Ring Road and City Road remained unchanged.

Sample Answer

Obesity has now become a matter of concern worldwide. An obese person is prone to various health risks like diabetes and heart disease etc. Some people believe that this problem can be handled with proper education and awareness, whereas, others think that there is no link between education and obesity. There are valid opinions to weigh both the sides of the discussion, which I will consider in the following paragraphs.

On one hand, education can help to prevent obesity and other health problems by spreading awareness. People often ignore their health to maintain their work-life and forget the fact that health is the real wealth. After all, good health indicates fitness and longevity. A proper education system will enable people to adopt different ways to stay fit and healthy. They will learn to focus on balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

On the other hand, lack of education is not the only cause of obesity. In developed countries, in spite of having high education level, people are becoming obese. This fact indicates that diet and lifestyle are the key contributors to this problem. Moreover, our attitude is also responsible for overeating and less physical activities. Even if people have time, they do not participate in outdoor activities and consume much more food than required. Thus, people should take onus of their health by following a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.

Overall, in my opinion, knowledge is futile if we do not apply it in a correct way. Due to obesity, quality of life suffers and also people often lose their self-esteem. People should get education for realising the importance of healthy diet to lead a happy life. Other causes of obesity should also be examined to find solutions accordingly.

The charts provide details about various internal training programs in a financial organisation.

Overall, it can be clearly observed that the most amount of training hours per year are spent on technical skills. Most of the employees believe that training programs are important for their job.

Looking at the details of the pie chart, 30 hours per year are spent on training workers in technical field which is the highest in the given chart while a mere 5 hours per annum are invested on training employees in health and safety. Career development is the second most important topic as employees give 15 hours per year training to it whereas, 10 hours yearly are spent on training staff in interpersonal skills.

Office workers are subdivided into two categories: manager and secretary. Seventy seven percent managers and 86 % secretaries believe it is important for their job to participate in training.  Approximately 10 % of both the groups are of the view that training is a waste of valuable time. Nearly 2/3 of managers believe that participating in training is a good excuse for a change while the percentage of secretary is marginally lower. IELTS Essay # The quality of life in the cities is worsening

IELTS Essay, The quality of life in the cities is worsening

In many countries, the quality of life in the large cities is worsening. What possibly can cause this problem? What measures can be taken to resolve it?

Sample Answer

Many cities across the globe are witnessing a decline in the quality of life. This essay will look at the reasons behind this and give some possible measures to overcome the problems of city dwellers.

Firstly, an ever increasing population and migration of people from rural to urban areas have caused congestion. This has led to growth in the numbers of slums in some areas. Slums as we know do not have any basic facilities like hospitals, sanitation, clean drinking water and are a hotbed of diseases. As a result of living in unhygienic conditions, not only people in slums suffer from serious health problems but also aid the cause of spreading flu and other viruses. Secondly, hectic schedule and excessive workload also hamper the quality of life. To explain it further, extended working hours, long commuting time leave urbanites with hardly ever time to involve in recreational activities which are indispensable to ensure the wellbeing of human beings. As a consequence, there has been a sharp rise in the prevalence of psychiatric problems among people in large cities.

To look at the possible measures, the government should develop affordable accommodation facilities to accommodate an ever-growing number of city dwellers. There should be strict restrictions on building of slums and stern action need to taken against offenders. In order to control the influx of rural migrants, the government should focus on the development of the countryside. Gyms and recreational facilities like parks, gardens and yoga centres etc should also be constructed by the government and there should be no charge to use them. Moreover, positives of good health should be highlighted, asking people to follow a balanced life.

To conclude, unfettered growth of population, stressful lifestyle and lack of basic facilities in certain areas have made the life worse in cities. Undoubtedly, if this situation is to be improved, effective measures have to be taken.
