IELTS Speaking Cue Card # Stress

Describe a stressful day at work.
You should say –

  • how the day started
  • how things went wrong
  • who were the people who were involved

Why was it stressful?

There are so many days that are stressful when I am not able to understand why things are the way they are and why am I not able to do things. Although, often these days very soon get replaced by much brighter day, I remember one particular day that started off with great promises but turned out to be a one kind of a hell, when I just couldn’t respond to anything.

I woke up at around 5, did go to jogging and by 7 started off my work. I worked till 9 in the morning on my blog and then got ready to reach office. On reaching office, I started working on the project and when at around 1, someone just told that there is some work that needs to be done and I am responsible for it. So, just when I was about to go for my lunch, I had to I had to wait and do the work. The work got completed by 2:20 and I had to go to the training from 2:45 to 5:30.

In between, there were calls from family and friends and I could not pick them up. Not only was I exhausted but when I thought that I would go out and relax with my friends, I met some rude and upset faces. It took such a long time to make them believe that I was truly busy, but the sour remained. It was that day, when I was left alone, completely exhausted by work and with no one to comfort me.

By the end of the day, I decided to just let go off the feeling and went on to read Archies comics and ended the day, laughing off and having a good night sleep.

Which would you choose: A stressful job with very high pay or a relaxing job with considerably low pay? Why?

I think it would depend on the situation in which I am. So, if I have the money and I am not in an urgent need of it, I would prefer a relaxing job. But, if the choice is given between two jobs out of which one is what I love to do  and the other is not, I would no matter how much stress is there, would go for a job that is close to my heart.

Do you suffer from stress when you have too much work to do?

Yes, sometimes I do. The most stressful days for me are the ones in which I have to work a lot and then there is no one whom I can talk to or fight with and comfort myself. I believe after every stressful or low moment, there should be a day where one can relax and just recharge oneself to be able to do more work.

How can you judge what is the right amount of stress for you?

There are times when I start crying for no reasons known and in those days I realize that I am stressed very much. Because, I don’t know the exact reason of my agony and it comes out in the form of pain. When things like these start happening at frequent times, I just realize that stress is getting over me. But, then there are times, when I am worried about something and I keep on working and going on about it, because I just am in so much fear of losing. I think stress of that kind is fine because it is very much motivating.

Do you keep your worries a secret from everyone?

Most of the times, yes I do. I don’t like troubling people with my issues but then there are times when things get out of my control and when that happen, I tend to share my sorrows with people who are very close to me. They are either my friends or sometimes I even write about it.

IELTS Cue Card Sample Answer # Meeting You Remember

There are so many meetings that we do attend, may be during our school days, sometimes during our college and very often when we start working. However, there are numerous meetings that we attend, there are only few that we do remember. Let us today have a look at a cue card that talks about a meeting that you remember.

Describe a meeting you remember going to at work, college or school.

You should say:

  • when and where the meeting was held
  • who were present at the meeting
  • what the topic and agenda of the meeting were.
Sample Answer One

I have been part of a club at my organization that brings about change in our company. We are the people who are looked forward to when there is a talk about a change that has to be brought in the organization. Although, there are many meetings that I have attended as part of being its member, I clearly remember a very crucial meeting during my journey.

It was a case of sexual harassment and the person affected by it wanted a solution and still not be brought out in picture. It was a very critical situation because we wanted to bring out justice and that involved interaction with the higher authorities. So, we decided to have a meeting with the HRs about the issue.

The meeting was scheduled on the second Friday of that month and I can recall, I was preparing for that meeting for more than a week. There were talks with the victim and the person being charged for. There were then days when I thought may be I am on the wrong side and then the days when I was confused about the entire scenario. Sometimes it seemed as if everything is facade.

But, the meeting helped me open up a lot. It began with the HR head introducing the members available. SO, we had the HR head, the DC head, the accused and our team. It was a very private meeting involving only the few of us. There were times when we had a heated argument and sometimes there were contradictions on everything. We had to make sure that the justice is being given out and the decision is the right one because it was the concern of career of an individual.

The reason I am going to remember this meeting for a very long time is because it helped me to understand how real life decisions are made. The heads were very transparent when understanding the situation and made the right call at the right time and that is what made the difference. It was the first time that I was the person who led the team and in very many sense was the one who was active and the key decision maker.

Sample Answer Two

There are so many meetings that  I have come to attend as soon as I started my work life. But, the one meeting that I am going to remember for a very long time is the one I had with my manager for the first time.

The day we arrived at our given location, we were asked to meet the managers of a project that is very crucial to the company. Initially, I had no idea that it is more of a selection criteria and I just went there and had a talk. But, later did I realized the importance of the meeting and unknowingly I did was the best that could have been done.

The meeting started with all of us giving our introductions and telling what our career goals are. And then he started asking stuff about our knowledge of Business Intelligence and what we would do in a particular scenario. The meeting got very interesting as it approached its climax because we were not just talking about the concepts and the technical issues but were more concerned about how they can be implied to solve the real life issues. What could be done and what needs to be changed. It was amazing and the reason I am going to remember it is because looking back at it, I think it was the best that could have happened to me.

I got selected and the project that I got into made me learn things and do things that I had been in love with. But, the best part, it brought me closer to my mentor, Steve Jobs.

IELTS Cue Card # Important Skill

We all are born with certain skill sets. Let us today have a look at some of the questions related to skills that can be asked in the cue card section of IELTS speaking .

Describe a skill which is important to you.

You should say:

  • What is it?
  • How difficult it is to learn?
  • How can one learn it?

and explain why this is important to you.

Sample Answer One

There are so many skills that are very important for a person to succeed in life. I believe in today’s world, the one skill set that is very important is communication skill. We are living in a century, where it is all about presenting your ideas, your thoughts and your decisions well. It is all about marketing. So, you might have a great product but fail in communication, leading to an entire failure.

Improving on communication skills is not very difficult however I would say it is very time consuming. You cannot improve your communication skills in just a day or may be a month. It sometimes takes more than four months, sometimes years and for some it is more or less life time learning.

The only way a person can improve on the communication skills is by communicating with lot of people. That requires breaking from the barriers of what the other person might think and more than that it requires lot of practice as well. So, you need to go talk to yourself in the mirror and then may be record yourself and judge yourself. Even more, you need to listen to the great speakers and how they interacted. There is so much that has to be done. From the internal practice that goes on daily, interacting with others and then not losing hope. Improving communication skills is more of a habit than a skill that can be just improved by giving only a certain time to it.

The reason I believe it is the most important skill is because we all have become digitalized, we all don’t have much of time and to grasp anyone’s attention you have got just five minutes and in those five minutes, the ones who are able to attract attention, are the ones who get heard.

Sample Answer Two

The world has drastically changed and the skills which were considered the most important have now lost their importance. And in this shift of skills the one skill that has emerged to be the most important is the ability to use computers well.

With the coming of internet and social media, anyone who wants a job as basic as a receptionist needs to know how to use computers. Because, everything is being stored in the computers and retrieved from it. Gone are the days of register entries, we are in the times when every individual is having a smart phone and they are using it for various works.

Although, there is a certain skepticism in the minds of people regarding the use of computers. I believe the basic use of it can be learnt very easily. So, may be in a month a person can very well type documents, make average presentations and use Internet. This is the most basic and important requirements and can be learnt easily. However, to be able to use computers more effectively, it comes with time. So, the more often you use computers, the better it is.

The one way a person can learn a computer is by using a computer. It is so easy, everything is there in front of you and you have to start experimenting with it. One can also learn computers from a coaching or may be through a friend but I am still of the opinion that the best way to learn computers is by using it. So, one should buy a computer and start using it and exploring it.

The reason I am emphasizing on learning computers is because they make our life very easy and bring along with them lot of opportunities. if one needs to get a good job or even if perform the daily activities easily, computers have become an essential thing for us.

IELTS Cue Card # Adventurous Person

There surely are some people who we meet in our lives, who are adventurous. The ones we look at and feel amazed. Let us today have a look at a cue card related to an adventurous person that might be asked in IELTS cue card.

Describe an adventurous person who you know.

You should say:

  • who the person is
  • how you know this person
  • what this person does that is adventurous

and explain why you think this person likes to take risks.

SAMPLE ANSWER – One

I have a friend whom I met in one of the trekking trips that I took to Rishikesh. We were part of the same team and so were most of the times having fun together. It was there that I came to know about how he left his 9 to 5 job, to do what he loves the most, travelling.

Arjun, my friend is a traveler and travels to new places and visits all the extreme locations. So, he has been to Ladakh, Rajisthan, Rishikesh and has done almost all the adventurous sports. But, what fascinated me more about him, apart from these adventurous sports is the fact that he had imbibed in him the feeling of adventure. He believed that it is not just about doing those exciting things which we find exciting but adventure is just moving a bit away from the comfort zone.

And it is in this way that you can actually live your life in the most exciting way. Meeting him then and over a period of time, I realized that in some way he was not just adventurous but a person who lived every moment of the life as the largest one. So, when everyone went to the pool for swimming, he went to oceans. When everyone was busy watching movies, he was creating stories. For him it was never adventure and in some way he made me realized it as well, it is about giving everything to this one moment.

SAMPLE ANSWER – Two

I think the most adventurous person I have ever known has to be my brother. It was in the last year of his Bachelors that he realized his flair for travelling. When everyone was looking for jobs, he decided to travel. Earning some money through freelancing he started travelling. It was in those travels that he picked up day jobs, to let him survive and let the journey going.

It was after one long year that I met him and the stories that he told were amazing. He went hitch hiking from Dehradun to Kanyakumari, taking with him an initial amount of only 1000 rupees. So, there were times when he took lifts, did jobs to let him earn some money and mixed with local people. In the entire journey he was able to learn the basic language for almost 5 languages and can now very well interact with us using those language. He made friends and there are people he goes to meet even now.

When I asked if he did any adventurous sports, he replied saying he did lived an adventurous life. And this was something that did strike me.

Knowing absolutely nothing about what can happen the next moment and then having the faith that everything will work out fine is something that he has learnt from this trip. Although he has taken up a job, but the adventure in him is still alive, the reason why he takes trips every six months.
