IELTS Speaking Sample Answer # Individuality

We all are born individuals, but it is the people we associate ourselves with and the ones we want to be with, define what we become. However, there are people who no matter get associated with any number of people, are known for what they are and what they did. These are known to be individuals and it is often asked to maintain individuality no matter who you get associated with it. Let us today, have a look at some of the questions related to individuality.

What do you think makes you unique?

I am not very sure of it, but I think the desire in me to be successful makes me unique. I don’t know why but I want to be successful and for me, success means becoming what I am meant to be. There are so many people with such great innate talents but somehow they get lost. I want to find out my innate talent, find out the reason why I am born and do what I am best at, the best in the world.

Is it okay to look different from other people or should you look the same as other people?

In my opinion, it shouldn’t be a matter of concern as to whether you look like someone or not. I think the main focus of an individual should always be on looking like the way they think they should look like. Not following any trend, but just following their heart and wearing something that makes them feel proud or comfortable or for that matter something that represents themselves. And when one does it like that, they do look different, more importantly unique.

What do you think when you see someone who looks very different?

It depends. There are people who look different in a very hilarious way while there are even who just start a trend with their looks. But, no matter what, when I see someone who looks different I tend to admire them. Because, these are the people, who often instead of trying to fit it, try to carve out new ways. And in my opinion, it takes a lot of courage to do something that not everyone is doing.

If you went to a job interview with green hair, what do you think would happen?

Going for a corporate interview, most probably I would be thrown out. But I think if I go out for a fashion magazine interview or maybe some job where there is a lot of creativity and funkiness required. Like maybe a cartoonist or a writer or a painter or maybe musician, there are lot many chances that I get selected.

If you see someone with a lot of tattoos what do you think of them?

Tattoos have rarely been something that helps me decide the character or opinion of the other person.  The only thing that comes to my mind when I see someone with tattoos is that maybe the person has some connection with the tattoo, either they like it or it is something they want to be like.

If you had to change your hair color, what color would you change it to?

I would love to have some part of my hair colored red. I think red is some color that brings with it a lot of funkiness as well as power when used on hairs. Other than that, I think I can even go for a violet because it makes you look a different and yet not completely out of the box.

Have you ever felt like a square peg in a round hole?

No, I think for some reasons, I am just like everyone else. I have got dreams and I am trying to fulfill them like so many other individuals out there. Maybe I am a little more fearless, a little more passionate, but I still hold the opinion that I am just like everyone, with the same issues and same confusions. However, I have been told many a time that I am different.

What are some things you do to blend in?

Blending incomes very natural to me. It is not something I try to be, I think if one tries to simply listen to the other person and understand his or her opinion and situation and makes an attempt to accept the other person, one naturally blends in.

If you had to do one crazy thing to your appearance what would you do?

I would shave off my hair. In my country, hair for a girl is said to be the most important thing and I want to break that opinion. I want people to look at a girl apart from her physical appearance, judge her on her abilities.

If you got a tattoo, what would it be?

If I ever get a tattoo, it will surely be a tattoo of flying birds because I myself want to be like a bird. Free, doing what she wants to. The bird is that one creature who can simply take of her wings and go to wherever she wants. She is fearless, unaware of the ground because she knows that the sky is all hers.

Do you think people pay enough attention to their health?

When talking of the average guy, I would say definitely not. The common man is lost in his own world of figuring out things for himself or herself. Most of them are living the sedentary lifestyle with no care of the diet the person is taking. There is always a rush and a time that people have to meet. So, you would find them eating very less of food in the breakfast, lunch or dinner. Most of the times it is neither nutritious nor healthy. Even more, people rarely go for exercise because they don’t have the time, leading them to bigger issues later in life.

Do you think the government is responsible for public health?

Too an extent, I believe yes, government is responsible for public health in some or the other way. So, if there is bad quality of food that is getting supplied than obviously it is the common man that suffers. Also, if proper care from the side of government is not taken regarding the environment people are more likely to fall ill. But, having said that, I think to a larger extent it is the individual in whose hands the responsibility of health lands in.

Do you think there are more unhealthy people these days as compared to a decade ago?

Definitely yes. A decade ago there was no fast food and even the climate was good. So, people ate healthy food, much more healthier than what we eat now. Even more, people were more active as they either traveled on cycle or walked around. These days there are so many things that are easily available to us, making us more lazy and hence unhealthy.

How do you think parents can encourage children to be healthy?

I believe the one way they can do is by remaining healthy themselves. So, a child is more likely to follow what his or her parents are doing. If the parent is going for a jog in the morning, later in years , the child is more likely to do that as well. Another way could be involve children in cooking healthy meals to encourage them to change their eating habits.

Do you think it is hard to give up smoking?

Yes surely. Anything that has become a part of someone’s life is hard to leave especially something as addictive as smoking. But, I think if someone has the determination to do it, they surely can. There have been my friends who were very addicted to smoking but when they decided to leave it, they did. It was difficult for them but yet they did.

How do you usually cope with stress?

When dealing with stress, I am more likely to write or play badminton. So, whenever I am stressed out or worried about something I tend to write it on a piece of paper. There are however times when even writing does not help and in those moment I talk to someone or the other to shift my mind from the stress.

Is there any connection between the person’s style of life and the duration of his life?

Surely there is a relation between the two. A person living a healthy lifestyle is more likely to have a longer duration when compared to someone who is not living a healthy one. There are more chances of someone taking up a disease because of an unhealthy life style when compared to someone who leads a healthy life style.

What is your attitude towards smoking?

Smoking is surely something that can deteriorate a person’s health and it not only affects the person but also the ones living near him or her or anyone who is nearby while smoking. According to a recent survey, there are more people dying of passive smoking than active. But, then apart from the health issues I think there are no moral issues that I have regarding smoking or anyone who smokes. It is harmful, but then it is the choice of the individual to either take it up or let it be.

SAMPLE ANSWER 1

I remember buying my first laptop after months of saving. At that time, there were two kinds of job that I was doing, one was as a freelance writer and the other was of a Software Engineer. Although I could have bought a 30000 laptop from the earning of a month when the day came closer of actually buying the laptop, I for a second thought about it again and for some reasons decided not to buy a normal personal computer and decided to buy a Macintosh.

There was no definite reason for buying it. It is just that while I was about to buy my first laptop, something just came back to me. Some years ago while having a conversation with my uncle, I told him it is a laptop which is very important for me. I would buy myself a Macintosh as the first laptop.

The Macintosh that I fell in love with was MacBook Air. You could just go on doing your work in it forever. And then there is so much attachment with the machine because of his founder, Steve Jobs. I mean every time you work on a Macintosh it feels like you are doing great work and you are being unique.

I remember having saved for three months before I could buy a Macintosh and it took me many sleepless nights before it was mine and trust me the day it was mine, it was amazing, beautiful. Its features were so amazing that it has been six years since I first bought my first Macintosh and it is still running fine.

The reason that I bought it was that I wanted to know Apple better and it is when you use a device of a certain company that you are able to know the company and its ethics better.

Using mobile phones in public may appear indecent or it might cause irritation to others. Like, if there are three people sitting quietly in a park and then there is this guy who is talking loudly on phone, it takes away the peace of the entire atmosphere. Or if you are in a temple, the phone rings and imagine that happening for lot of people. The sound causes disturbance. Moreover, since public spaces are very crowded, there are more chances of accidents accidents happening.

In the present era that we are living, I think it is almost impossible for me to do without a mobile phone even for a single day. I need it not only for communicating but also for passing time by playing games of using internet application and there is so much more to do.
