IELTS Speaking Sample Questions # Punctual

Punctuality of an individual speaks a lot about them. However, with changing times and priorities people have come up a notion that it is important that the work gets done, rather than focusing on when it is getting done. This time we are looking for some questions related to punctuality that can be asked in IELTS speaking part I.

Do you think it is important for an individual to be on time?

I think it is quite of a relative question. So, it mostly depends on the situation. For example, if an individual is late for a meeting or a flight, the person is going to loose lot of things. However, for places like parties or travelling, being very time bound takes a lot of fun out of vacations. Also, if you know someone is waiting for you, one must try to be on time.

How do you feel when others are late?

If my entire plan depends on that person, I really don’t like people getting late. Also, being late does not mean skipping five or ten minutes, but beyond that, it really becomes annoying. Specially, in places like movies or a game, where you miss a part of it, if your partner is late. But, for the most part, if I have to not wait for a very long time, I don’t mind too much on people being late.

How often are you late?

For most part, I try to be on time, but surely I am not one of those who follow the dot rule. So, being on time for things like meeting up with friends I can be late by five or ten minutes. But, in formal situations like meetings or for flights, I am punctual enough not to cause any trouble.

Do you feel guilty when you are late?

Definitely yes, if the team had to wait for me, I do feel bad. But, yet again, it is all about the time they have to wait. For me, being late five minutes is not a big deal in informal situations. But, yes, in formal if I am even late by a minute, I feel a little low, because then there are many eyes looking on you.

What are some of the ways by which you think people can come on time?

Well, I believe being on time is just a matter of practice and attitude. So, if every time you are late for the small things that do not matter much, there are more chances that you are likely to be late when big things come up. Also, it is about attitude in a sense, that if you consider the even as important or for that matter the small things in your life important, there are less chances that you shall be late for it.

Do you wear a watch?

I like wearing watches and I used to wear them. However, with changing times, I have stopped wearing one.

When does time moves fast for you and when do you find it is moving really slow?

Well, like most humans, for me, when I waiting for someone with nothing to do, time seems to go really slow. Also, when I am waiting for something to arrive, time seems like moving like a turtle to me. But, in moments when I am doing something that I love, time flies by for me. Things like writing, reading, travelling or coding makes my time go by like a bee.

If you could go back in time, what is the one thing you would do differently?

There is nothing much that I wish to change with my life, but if there could be one thing, I think the decision to take science stream in intermediate is the one decision I wish to change. Too an extent, after the years passed by, I think I am more of Arts student, the one with some creativity down the line. So, instead of banging by head over something that I was not very much good at, I think taking Arts and then figuring out life, would have changed many things for now.

IELTS Speaking Sample Questions # Newspapers

We are living in the information age. Events, happening flow by as fast as they could and reach to a broader mass making a lasting impact. Gone are the days when it took months to reach news to the other place, the news in today’s time is just a click away. This time we are looking at some Section III speaking questions related to newspapers.

How do newspapers market themselves in your country?

Almost all the newspapers in our country, market themselves on social media. Most of them have facebook pages or twitter pages. People who like them get to see the news on their feeds. Even more, they all have a app for their newspaper that people can install and read the news. With regards to real readers, if a real agent advertises on how a newspaper helped it get a real deal, it could help more people to pitch it. For instance, there are many IAS officers who do recommend THE HINDU newspaper for IAS exam. So, most of the students who do prepare for it, go for the newspaper.

NEWSPAPERS

Do you think most newspapers put a spin to the story to get more sales?

I think definitely yes. Not only to increase their sales, more often newspaper reporters and editors do not know the entire story. But, waiting for the entire news to come up could give the other companies the competitive advantage. So, most of the times it is not only about increasing the sales but also about making sure that they have the competitive upper hand that makes the newspapers to put a spin to the story. But, yes, a twisted story always gives more readers than a plain simple story.

In terms of news, do you think there is much difference between newspapers and news channels?

Surely there is a difference. Newspapers have a limited space and they need to cater to a larger and broader audience. Giving simply news is not going to help the newspapers. So, there are sections for editorial and then news. Even more, there are newspapers with a section of games. With news channels, there prime motive is showing news. They don’t have much boundation on the content limit. A certain news can be broken down and telecasted more number of times to give it the entire perspective.

Do you think, in future, people are going to read more news on internet ?

With internet gaining so much of momentum, I think definitely yes. There are many news paper companies and news channels that have already created their account on social media. So, when most of the people are glued to their facebook ids, they often get the latest updates from the news channels or papers. Although, there are some people who still prefer newspaper or news channels, I think in coming times, there will be more people who will be taking in information from the internet.

What do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of internet?

Internet has surely come up as a savior for lot of people. Gone are the days when you need to have huge sum of money to get knowledge or lot of time to solve one issue. We are living in an age when the information is just a click away. However, just like so many other good things, it surely has its own disadvantages. It brings with it things like cyber crimes. People often lose money or important information to hacking.

IELTS Cue Card Sample Questions # Earthquakes

Earthquakes are a kind of natural disaster that destroys livelihoods more than any other form of natural disaster does. Not that the impact of the others is not high, but the frequency of earthquakes in recent times has been so high, that it has impacted livelihoods and business like no other. This time let us have a look at some questions that could be asked related to a calamity in the Section II of the speaking section in IELTS.

Describe a natural calamity that you fear. You should say:

  • what it is and why do you fear it
  • how long it has existed
  • how it affects people’s lives

and explain how you think the damage can be reduced.

SAMPLE ANSWER 1

The one calamity that truly shakes me up is Earthquake. The reason I really am afraid of Earthquakes is that they cause more destruction and are often responsible for causing other forms of natural calamities. For instance, landslides and then tsunamis. Earthquakes, if not take away lives, do cause some building to fall. Often these are the life time savings of an individual. Even more, it has been observed that Earthquakes often come at times when nothing much could be done. Like, during night, when everyone is sleeping. Most people do not even feel the tremors until they die.

Earthquakes have been part of our history since Earth was made. They were responsible for shaking things up and changing our lands. Earthquakes surely bring about lot of changes. Not only do they cause deaths and tremors, often times they shatter people’s dream. For example, the 2001 Earthquake of Gujarat, not only caused loss of life, but there were many who had just built a home, or had bought a shop. People lost almost everything in it.

The only way we can fight back Earthquakes is by building homes and shops that are strong enough to handle Earthquakes. Also, there should be better analysis of Earthquake done to ensure that people know about it before hand and could take preventive measures.

EARTHQUAKES

EARTHQUAKES

SAMPLE ANSWER 2

The one natural calamity that I dread is Earthquake. The mere sight of losing everything that you have, not only the ones you love, but your dreams, shakes me up. Recently, while watching a video on Earthquake I saw a person half body under a stone and he was crying. The scene was so painful that I felt bad for the entire day. Even more, Earthquakes happen so fast and change things in way that one can never imagine.

Earthquakes not only affect lives primarily but are also responsible for causing other natural calamities, like Tsunami and landslides. On top of it, they have become so frequent that it seem as if some part of the Earth is always shaking up. As far as I know, Earthquakes are the reason Earth and all our lives came into existence and they have been part of us since Earth came into being.

The only way we can fight back Earthquake is by making sure that our walls are strong enough to endure it. Not only of our home but of our office and any place that we go. It is often our negligence to make safer places, that makes the impact of Earthquake worse. Also, proper analysis must be done for the Earthquake and if there is a chance of it, people should be made aware about it through news channels or any other medium of mass communication.

IELTS Speaking Sample Questions # Neighbours

We all live in a society with people around us. However, in the busy schedule that we all have molded ourselves into has led to us not having much contact with people around us. This time we are looking at some speaking questions related to neighbors.

Do you know the people who live next door to you?

I live in a society where we all have independent homes with a park in between the houses. Although, initially we were unaware of each other, with time we all have come to know each other. So, in spite of the busy schedule we have, we usually spend some time together in the weekends.

What kind of relationship do you share with your neighbors?

Well, it is more of a friendly relation because we both work for the same company and share our cars to work together. It is almost like a family friend and we do help each other out in tough situations.

Being a bachelor, I spend most of my time either working or studying or being part of some extra curricular activity. So, rarely do I get to spend time with my neighbors. However, I do know that there is a old couple that lives next to my house and we do pass smiles when we meet.

How can neighbors be helpful?

Neighbors, I believe are a family away from home. So, it is not only about just helping you in need, for example, in cases of emergency but also provide the emotional support when needed. There are times when we do get exhausted and then having someone to talk near by is something that really helps in the busy lives that we lead.

neighbors

What kind of problems can people have with neighbors?

Although, I do believe neigbours are people you would love to have, but then having people beside you who don’t understand basic nature of living, are truly a mess. For example, people who play loud music or those who ring your bell and run away. Then there are some people who tend to bitch about you in front of others. I think probably these are the kind of neighbors you would rather not have.

What do you like about your community?

I think the best part about my  community is that it is very safe and secure. Not only because of the guards and the cctv cameras, but because people know each other. So, if there is a problem you have got lot of people who can back you up. This I think is very important and although, there are some cases where I need to settle in, I really do love my community.

Are there any old people living in our society? What is their relationship with other members?

Not many, but yes there are some old people living in our society and since most of us are bachelors or very young, we treat them as part of our family. Most of the times, we go and meet them, interact with them. It almost feels like a family to them and us.

There are not many old people living in our society, mostly because many of them have settled in with their kids. But, we do interact with the older folks that live with us. Especially during the evening walks.

What do the people in your community do for recreation?

Most of the people in our society, go either for walk or gym for recreation. But, then there are some who go out and play badminton in the court as part of recreation while others prefer playing with kids.

Would you like to raise your children in a community like yours? Why or why not?

Definitely yes. Yes, I think the best part of my community is that we all stay together and yet stay separate. So, there is no hindrance of privacy but then in moments of happiness and sadness we all get together and I think this is very important for a child to grow well. Because, until he or she does not knows how to interact with people of different age group, the child does lacks things that help in future.

Does your community have meetings?

Yes, we have the monthly meetings on every fourth Sunday and it is important for every individual of the society to attend the meetings.
